by habit, like taking one's children to the movies.
Dr. Engle said that he thought it would be nice to continue having the Picnic, but wished to know if there were a Society purpose which justified assessing everyone and spending a lot of money on guests.
Dr. Fraser felt that inviting the residents at the hospitals was fitting, since it is the only way of paying them back.
Dr. Engle inquired whether Davis-Monthan and Veterans Administration doctors paid they way.
Dr. Chesser remarked that he personally felt it worth while to pay $10.00; that when he came to Tucson and was invited as a guest he met sixty or seventy people he otherwise would not have known.
Dr. Engle said that he would like to get away from the assessment; that he felt the people who come to the Picnic should pay, and that personally he would be willing to pay $10.00.
Dr. Manning remarked that there are some who object strenuously to paying even $5.00, and that all arrangements have to be planned ahead of time.
Dr. Fraser suggested entertaining the Society's guests, having the picnic, adding all the expenses and then making the assessment.
Dr. Steen stated that he did not agree with the point of view as far as the men from Davis-Monthan Field and Marana are concerned; that they are stationed there because they have to be, and it was his feeling they should be invited; that he was willing to go along as far as the men from the Veterans Administration were concerned, and felt he could tell Dr. Gaines that if the men wished to come they should pay.
Dr. Manning then stated that Dr. Engle's plan is that those who go will carry the Picnic with the exception of the residents, which will come out of the General Fund.
Dr. Engle addressed the chair, saying that on the assumption the Veterans are added there would be 35 guests and it would cost $75.00, and asked if there were enough money in the General Fund that the Society as a whole could pay for the guests and those members who go could pay their own way, thereby not assessing the members who do not attend the Picnic.
Dr. Manning said that he was somewhat leary [ leery ] about another assessment, and would rather take money out of bonds to take care of it (the guests), letting those who attend (members) pay they own way. He stated that he would rather have a nice Picnic, as far as the residents are concerned, than give a Christmas present, as was done last year.
It was moved by Dr. Engle that the members attending the picnic be assessed an amount which will cover the expense of the party, except for the expense of guests, which will be paid for from funds of the Society, if necessary.
Dr. Hileman moved an amendment to this motion, that it be clarified as to who will be considered guests--the members of Pinal, Cochise, Graham and Santa Cruz County Medical Societies, the hospital residents, doctors at Davis-Monthan Field on active duty, and at Marana Airbase, and the 50 year members.
Amendment accepted by Dr. Engle.
Motion seconded by Dr. Carreras, and was carried.
Dr. Beaton suggested dispensing with the music, but Dr. Steen felt that the music helped a lot last year, since many of the older men do not go in for sports or games, and it should be made attractive to get more members out.
Dr. Chesser suggested taking a cut from games, but Dr. Manning felt this would be difficult to figure.
Dr. Beaton remarked that he could see nothing wrong with making the assessment a litter higher to take care of such things; he had no objection to making it $10.00.
Dr. Manning felt that if a high figure were publicized before the picnic, it would cut out about 20% attendance. He felt that there might be serious objections next year on operational expense.
Dr. Fraser suggested making it all one assessment, high enough so that there would be enough for the Picnic too.
