Board of Directors Meeting, May 25, 1953 3
Dr. Steen remarked that, for other Societies, the pharmacists put on the Picnic for the Medical Society--provide the entertainment for the doctors and do not themselves attend.
Dr. Engle thought that the letter to the membership should contain the essential of this Board's reasoning on the Picnic--that it was decided not to assess everyone and that the Society has an interest in the thing.
Dr. Manning agreed that it should contain a paragraph explaining that there is no assessment this year, that the purpose of the Picnic is to entertain the hospital staffs and surrounding counties, and that full attendance be urged. The Secretary is to approach the Veterans doctors and Martin Drug Company.
Dr. Engle repeated that he thought something about the resolution should be contained in the letter so that the Veterans will know. He asked Dr. Manning if he thought nothing should be said about the price in the letter.
Dr. Manning replied that he thought not, because some feel that the Picnic should be put on without charge, because they do not recognize the Society's overhead.
Dr. Engle then inquired if it were much bookkeeping to earmark everything Picnic Funds, and Dr. Steen replied that it is not.
Dr. Chesser stated that it couldn't be held much before the 13th of June since many of the doctors are combining the AMA meeting with vacations.
Dr. Manning reiterated that he thought the news letter would be one of the most important things; that it should be explained why greater attendance is necessary to cut down expenses, and how the guest list is established.
Dr. Engle remarked that some of the internes and residents would leave the first of July.
Dr. Manning said that recently he had met with the Auxiliary, and that it is their feeling that the Society has never taken the proper interest in that body. He said that he believed the Auxiliary to be justified in feeling left out, and that much more interest should be taken, since this body does play a large part in policing the Society from gossip. One suggestion was made, which he thought a splendid one, was to have a combined, pay your own freight, get-together at the first of the year, to stimulate their membership.
Dr. Engle agreed that this is a good idea.
Dr. Manning said that this would be taken up again later, as the Board of Directors will have more meetings this summer.
Dr. Beaton suggested that Dr. Steen write Dr. Yount about the investment of State Society Funds. He believes they are no longer buying bonds and are putting their money in savings accounts.
Dr. Engle stated that he was sure these were different bonds than those which this Society holds; that they were bonds sold to banks.
Upon motion of Dr. Beaton, meeting adjourned.
