BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
June 10, 1953
The meeting was called to order at 8: P.M. by the President, W.R. Manning.
Members present were: W.R. Manning, President C.H. Kuhlman
W.B. Steen, Secretary-Treasurer Dennis Bernstein
Edward M. Hayden W.T. Hileman
Lindsay E. Beaton Leo J. Kent
Francis J. Bean F.J. Lesemann
Max Costin H.E. Thompson
M.A. Carreras David E. Engle
It was moved by Dr. L.E. Beaton to dispense with reading of the Minutes. Motion was seconded by Dr. Bean and carried.
Dr. Manning stated that he was in receipt of a request from Mr. Donald Lau of the Blue Cross-Blue Shield Plans to appear at one of the regular meetings of the Society to conduct a panel or round table discussion. This request is to be turned over to Dr. D.F. Hill, Program chairman, for reply, in event it will be possible in view of program commitments.
Dr. Manning submitted that the Society has an opportunity to have a Television show, following along the exact lines of that done by Maricopa County Society, to which we have to commit ourselves for 13 weeks only, at no cost to the Society, and with the privilege of approving the sponsor. He said that he had thought there would be no objection whatsoever, but had contacted the members of the Board of Directors and found enough feeling of doubt so that it should be discussed at a meeting of the Board of Directors. Dr. Manning stated that Mr. Ben Slack, of KVOA, advised him that they will be going into Television in September, and want to have a program similar, if not copied from the one put on in Phoenix by the Maricopa County Society, and that they would try to obtain a sponsor subject to our approval, possibly one of the Diaries [ Dairies ] here. There is to be no signed contract whatsoever, merely an agreement between the Society and Mr. Slack, as chairman at KVOA, the program perhaps to consist of a panel of two doctors with a person to lead and propose questions, and the first program to be a closed circuit held in their auditorium, to see how it works.
Discussion:
Dr. Costin--Are you sure you can get enough men to cover the whole thing?
Dr. Manning--I think we can, for 13 weeks. I dislike not doing it because I find that the osteopaths have a radio program that is not too bad, and other people say "Why do not the medical boys do something?" I want to do as much as possible for public relations, and believe that people will listen to a new station.
Dr. Bean--What are the possible objections?
Dr. Manning--that I do not know, but I gather that the main one is that such a project must be done right. Of course it does, and I believe we are as intelligent as they are in Phoenix, and can do as well as they did.
Dr. Kent--I think the one at Phoenix was well acknowledged.
Dr. Hayden--We have a complaint that it was too short.
Dr. Beaton--They feel in Maricopa that the response was excellent, and I know that when I talked I received several responses from all over the state. I think we should get a longer program. Fifteen minutes adds up to only about nine minutes. I think, also, that the question of "what men should you use" is important, but we can get men from out of town--it would be less like blowing our own horn in our own community. They felt that in Phoenix, and I think they would be willing to come down here.
