BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
October 1, 1953
Short Version
The meeting was called to order by the President, W.R. Manning, at 8: P.M., a quorum being present.
Motion to dispense with reading of the Minutes of previous meetings was made, seconded and carried.
Report for the Program Committee was made by Dr. Donald F. Hill to the effect that programs are now arranged for each month, with the exception of January, which is reserved for a business meeting. The November meeting is to be held at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base as the invitation of the doctors there, who will entertain at a conducted tour of the Base at 3: P.M. and a cocktail party at 5: P.M. Dinner will be served at 6: P.M., at a tax of $2.50, and the scientific program will be provided for the evening meeting following dinner.
Dr. Leo J. Kent reported for the Public Relations Committee. He stated that the television show will start the 19th of October, Monday, at 7: P.M. Arrangements have been made to have a program every Monday evening from 7: to 7:30, for 26 weeks. Programs are to be of the interview type, and members will be contacted in advance on requests to appear. The first subject is to be on Poliomyelitis, with Dr. Robert E. Hastings. No sponsor has been obtained to date, the station sustaining the program until such time as one is found and approved.
Letter was received from the Executive Secretary of the Pima County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, and stated that the Society's recommendation "that the members of the Medical Advisory Board for the Pima County Chapter of the National Foundation should be appointed yearly by the President of the Pima County Medical Society" was in conflict with regulations specified by their Chapter Manual. This states that the local Executive Board shall appoint members of the Medical Advisory Board, with the approval of the local Medical Society. The Secretary was instructed to reply suggesting that, when committees are appointed each January, a list of names be submitted by the Pima County Medical Society from which the local executive Board of the Foundation might choose or appoint the Medical Advisory Board.
Communication was received from the Professional Board of the Arizona Medical Association requesting that the contents of Dr. Royal W. Rudolph's report on the Public Health Program in Arizona be read at the first fall meeting. It was so ordered.
Dr. R. Robert Bates, who is now a member of the Armed Forces, was transferred to Service Membership in this Society.
Letter was received from the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of Arizona. This requested the viewpoint of the Society on the question of a shortage in the specialty of Pediatrics in this area, and concerned the issuing of temporary license to be granted. The matter was discussed and further investigation ordered.
