Board of Directors Meeting, October 1, 1953 2
A letter from H.E. Allshouse, D.O., Secretary of the Arizona Society of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, was read by the Secretary. This letter concerned correspondence form the local campaign director of the American Cancer Society regarding use of a film on cancer, the use of which was refused to them for a convention held in Tucson in May 1953.
It was moved by Dr. Harry Thompson that this letter be forwarded to the Cancer Society for their information.
Discussion:
Dr. Costin--I do not understand why they were refused--lay people can obtain these films.
Dr. Engle--I think it deserves the courtesy of a reply.
Dr. Thompson--Why should the Society bear the burden of this refusal? Let us turn it over to the Cancer people.
Dr. Manning--I think we should answer this courteously, and say that it is not in our province.
Dr. Thompson--The AMA will probably take some action on this question and perhaps approve the osteopaths, but until it is pretty hard to be impartial.
It was moved by Dr. Engle that reply be made to Dr. Allshouse, saying that his correspondence has been forwarded to the Cancer Society.
Motion, having been seconded by Dr. Kent, was carried.
A letter from Dr. Kent Thayer was read, concerning the Southwest Blood Bank in Phoenix, which is being called upon to provide blood by private hospitals and the Veterans Administration Hospital in Tucson because of the inability of the Red Cross Blood Bank to supply all the needed blood in this area. Dr. Thayer asked for an expression from the Society as to the advisability of continuing this without proper sanction from the Pima County Medical Society, and if the Society would prefer the Southwest to open a branch in Tucson, and if so, whether members elected from this Society would serve on its Board of Directors.
Discussion:
Dr. Harry Thompson: The State Association discussed this, and we have always been at opposite ends of the field on the Blood Bank question. Maricopa does not believe the Red Cross should handle it, and Pima County believes it should. It is up to the Society to determine which Blood Bank to use.
Dr. Beaton--How much blood is being requested from the Phoenix Blood Bank? Where are falling short? This is an entirely new light on our previous feeling on it. If the Red Cross is not doing the job, maybe we should be something about it.
Dr. Fraser--Is that the outfit that charges $7.50 for blood? Answer--Yes.
Dr. Thompson--We have some strong feeling on this subject--Royal Rudolph is for the Red Cross.
Dr. Manning--Kent (Thayer) wrote to me directly--there is certainly strong feeling in the group as a whole.
Dr. Engle--How do they get their blood?
Dr. Thompson--They buy it. $5.00 a pint.
Dr. Engle--The Red Cross is collecting blood in Phoenix, too, I take it?
Answer--Yes.
Dr. Thompson--Southwest charges for blood, say there is no reason why patients should not pay for it if they can, and if there is replacement they charge $7.50, and if no replacement they charge $25.00. I believe, if this does not come up at the meeting, our Blood Bank Committee ought to look into the matter.
Dr. Manning--This is to turned over to the chairman of the Red Cross Committee, and we want a report before the regular meeting. Check into it, if possible, as to how many requests from private hospitals have been filled. In the absence of Dr. Royal Rudolph I appoint Charles Stephens as chairman pro tem; he is to call me relative to this matter.
