past six or eight years. At least now we have a vehicle that is reaching at least thirty people a week. This is a start. We have a way to start crawling. I would like to see the program continued.
It was moved by Dr. Leo J. Kent that the Television program be continued. Motion was seconded by Dr. M.A. Carreras.
Dr. Kent--We have already had 11 programs and have committed ourselves for 26. By that time the committee will be worn out and ready to quit.
Dr. Rudolph--I wonder if the Medical Society ought to be told? Whether the members should have a chance to vote on it?
Dr. Kent--It would be interesting to see how the Society feels about it.
Dr. Engle--We had a poll--we sent out questionnaires and informed the members that we were anticipating 26 programs. It is not necessary to poll the Society about the programs which are already set up. I think that before we enter into another agreement we ought to poll the society.
The motion of Dr. Kent to continue the Television program, upon being put to the question, was carried.
Reports of Committees were made, as follows:
For the Hospital Building Committee, by Dr. Harry E. Thompson. The committee's plan, he said, calls for a campaign to start in midsummer, probably, and this should be kept confidential, as it is planned to circulate a petition calling for a bond issue. This will have to be approved and then some up a the general election, and means that probably starting in July it will be necessary to bring up all the things that Dr. Rudolph talked about the incorporate them in the campaign. Dr. Thompson stated that this matter has been discussed informally, enlisting service organizations and places to speak where this subject can be broadcast throughout Tucson, and that this program should coincide with petition formation for bond election. The Building Committee, he said, is not going to be able to do much until that time.
Dr. Manning added that it may be necessary, before the public is approached, to decide on a location. This point, he said, was mentioned by Mr. Mansfield, and obviously the first question which will be asked will be "Where are you going to build it?" In order to avoid profiteering on the part of real estate people or politician, a site should be decided upon ahead of time and covered.
Dr. Bernstein asked if this refers to just a County Hospital building program, or to a combined building.
Dr. Harry Thompson replied that the prime project is for a new Pima County Hospital; that many of the men felt it should be up to the doctors to outline a future medical center, but that the committee is somewhat handicapped and has thought of a plan so that a new wing might be added as a community hospital. Present plans, he said, are dedicated primarily to a new County Hospital with an expansible portion so that if the community wants to build a new wing, it can be done. He thought that financial conditions at Tucson Medical Center are so delicate that this cannot be publicized at all, and expressed the hopes that eventually that white elephant might be closed. He stated that he considered the best plan now is to go at it as a County Hospital, but that it is necessary to think of a site and get a line on property.
For the Civil Defense Committee, by Dr. Darwin W. Neubauer. Dr. Neubauer stated that in the last few days a question has come up on which the local Civil Defense Group would like to know the attitude of the Pima County Medical Society, and that it would abide by the suggestion made by the Society.
