BOARD OF DIRECTORS
March 4, 1954
[ handwritten: Short Version ]
A quorum being present, the meeting was called to order at 8: P.M., by the President, Dr. Dennis Bernstein.
Minutes of the Board of Directors meeting of February 4, 1954, were read by the Secretary, and approved.
Replies from Senator H.S. Corbett and Representatives Dr. John W. McInnes, Enos P. Schaffer and Alvin Wessler, to our letter of February 19, 1954, endorsing the proposed health legislation, were read by the Secretary.
Report from the Coroner's Committee was received, recommending that a Medical Examiner be appointed by the Pima County Board of Supervisors, together with the necessary assistants or deputies, that all autopsies be performed by a qualified practicing pathologist and that anyone appointed to perform these duties should be a member of this Society. It was moved that this information be forwarded to the Supervisors with the approval of the Society.
Dr. Dennis Bernstein and Dr. David E. Engle were selected from the Delegates of Pima County Medical Society to represent us on the Nominating Committee of the Arizona Medical Association.
Report of the Cancer Committee was submitted by Dr. R.E. Fuller, Chairman, and was read by the Secretary. The Committee recommended--
a. Inasmuch as each patient presents a unique problem, that no standard (stereotyped) method be used in detection of disease be adopted.
b. For the same reason, since each clue presented as the patient is examined should be diligently pursued, that no standard fee be adopted.
c. Because it would be unethical (and also probably illegal) that the names of patients suffering from cancer should not "confidentially" be reported to the Cancer Society.
d. That it be arranged, if possible, that the American Cancer Society discontinue the present (local) practice of making appointments for patients with doctors. It is felt that each individual should be advised by the Society to see his or her family physician or (lacking a family doctor) to call the office of the Pima County Medical Society for assistance in selecting a physician.
The President announced the appointment of five additional members to serve on the Cancer Committee. They are Doctors Earl R. Baldwin, George Fraser, Hugh H. McFayden, Royal W. Rudolph and T.E.A. von Dedenroth.
No action was taken on a request that physicians assist the American Cancer Society in its imminent drive for funds by the Cancer Committee. This was discussed by the Board of Directors, who moved that the Society follow the same policy as that which was followed last year with respect to speaking for organizations or appearing for them in aid of fund drives; i.e., that the Pima County Medical Society would not back any particular fund drive.
Dr. Charles Newcomb was present to request the Society's support for the program of expansion of the Juvenile Delinquent Detention Home. Dr. Newcomb was asked by Judge Johnson to serve on a Citizen's Committee for this purpose, and attended a meeting at which the present problems were submitted, and the needs described. After discussion, it was moved that the Pima County
