Minutes of the Board of Directors meeting of February 4, 1954, were called for by the President and read by the Secretary.
Dr. Hayden inquired whether there was not something in the motion about the Poll on the Pfizer Golf Tournament about including another question relative to longer or shorter meetings.
The Secretary replied that such a motion had been made by not acted upon by seconding.
There being no corrections or objections these Minutes were approved as read.
On February 19, 1954, a letter was addressed to the Arizona legislators endorsing the proposed health legislation which was discussed at the February Board of Directors meetings. Replies were received from Senator H.S. Corbett and from Representatives Dr. John W. McInnes, Enos P. Schaffer and Alvin Wessler. These replies were read by the Secretary.
At the direction of the Board of Directors on December 7, 1953, the President appointed a committee consisting of the pathologists in town to act as a liaison committee between the Society and the Board of Supervisors to thrash out the problem of medical help for the coroners. Dr. George Hartman, chairman of this committee, submitted the report of its findings, to the effect that it be recommended that a Medical Examiner be appointed by the Pima County Board of Supervisors from among the qualified practicing pathologists who are member of the Pima County Medical Society, and suggested that two others be appointed as assistants.
Discussion:
Dr. Costin--Does he mean that they should be appointed as assistants to the Coroner, or that there should be a Medical Examiner type of thing?
Dr. Hayden--Shall we write the Supervisors that this be put into effect?
Dr. Bean--Whoever is appointed will have to assistant to the present Coroner. They probably call them Coroner's physicians.
Dr. Steen--It that what they do in Phoenix?
Dr. Bean--They have the same statute in Phoenix. Legally, the Coroner is the man who has to control the thing, but he has assistants, call them what you will.
Dr. Fraser--Is the Justice of the Peace officially Coroner?
Dr. Hayden--Yes.
Dr. Steen--One of the objection which was brought up at the Board Meeting at the County Hospital was the difficulty about getting somebody to do this work.
Dr. Bean--they wanted to appoint one man, and none of the pathologists wanted to take the whole load.
