Board of Directors Meeting, April 8, 1954. 10
Dr. Bernstein--If the situation is as they describe, we do not approve of it, and think the situation ought to be so and so.
Dr. Lesemann--Refer it to some State Committee in the State Medical Society.
Dr. Bernstein--Yuma has just asked us for an opinion.
Dr. Steen--In the event one of these small films is taken we recommend that the person be referred to his private physician.
Dr. Bernstein--It seems to be that Yuma has asked us what do we think about the problem, and we want to reply to them.
Dr. Rudolph--I think that is the way it has always been done. If they get a microfilm that looks suspicious they call them back for recheck and then, if they find any trouble they tell them to go to a private physician.
Dr. Beaton--If they [ crossed out: mad ] need a private physician, why not tell them to go to them?
Dr. Kent--I got one last week, and he had a letter to take the film to his private doctor.
Dr. Beaton--I move that we write the Yuma County Medical Society, saying we can see they have a problem, but we have not had a similar problem here, and until we do we have no expression of opinion from this County Society. Motion seconded by Dr. Rudolph and carried.
Letter from the Secretary of the Education Committee at the Veterans Administration Hospital, inviting the Pima County Medical Society to hold its May meeting there on May 11, was read by the secretary.
[ crossed out: Dr. Steen--I had a talk with Tiche [ Titche ] and ]
The President remarked that he was somewhat upset by this, because of the invitation to dinner, because of the Auxiliary problem--Usually they are invited, too, and he thought it might be awkward.
Dr. Steen--I had a talk with Titche about this, and he is upset about the same thing as you.
Dr. Bernstein--I would say that we do not need to act on this at this meeting.
Dr. Kent--Why not accept it and the ladies can go in Engle's car?
Dr. Costin--I move we authorize the Secretary to make a decision as he sees fit after duly investigating it.
Dr. Rudolph--I second the motion. Motion carried.
The application of Dr. Eileen Phillips for Associate membership because of her retirement from active practice was read by the Secretary
It was moved by Dr. Kent that this be accepted. Motion seconded by Dr. Beaton and carried.
Dr. Kent--the Medical Examiner--Kautenberger [ Kautenburger ] wrote that big article in the paper. The outfit had formerly ruled that there should be a meeting of the Board of Supervisors and Pathologists and everybody get together and find out how to handle it. Kautenberger [ Kautenburger ], to our knowledge, has not received any letter from this Society but [ crossed out: now he is still ] anyway he is still picking on us about this. What have we done?
Dr. Hileman--We wrote a copy of the report that was made to us by the Committee just as I read it tonight.
Dr. Kent--What if they won't do it, what do we do?
Dr. Bernstein--It was a little presumptuous of us to ask the Committee to meet with the Supervisors.
Dr. Kent--They won't expend any more money than the $1,000.00 they pay Cohen, and he is not in favor of doing the job, but he is willing to go along. I do not know if he will be willing to do it.
Dr. Carreras--Cohen objects on several reasons--does not want to go to court--does not want to go out at night for unexplained deaths. Looking at it objectively, it is not the right thing. Now, they are paying the County pathologists $1,000.00 a month, and if he were younger and did not mind to do the job, that would be all right, too. The question is not that the man who is there does not like to do the job. I do not think they will call him out every night, or every time there is a death on the highway.
Dr. Bean--I take it that it was a rather screwy meeting, but they have gone as far as to respect the recommendation of the Society and say that the work be done by a member of the County Society, and immediately turn around and want to take the pathologist at the
