Board of Directors Meeting, April 8, 1954 14
Dr. Engle, continuing--I thought it would be a good idea if they meet with us tonight after this meeting and go over the history a little so we might be brought up to date because the question comes up about rotation and reasons for any change in rotation, whether the out of city should be represented or whether Phoenix should have a President twice as often as Tucson because there are twice as many people there? We ought to know more about what men would be decent representatives and what men would not be acceptable at all from the standpoint of interest, character, etc.
Dr. Beaton--I think Maricopa is prepared to go along with Harry for President. Carlos Craig said he had been appointed on the Nominating Committee for Maricopa and he presumed we would want to put Harry in.
Dr. Manning--We talked about this last year. We want to maintain our 5 man representation on the Council.
Dr. Bernstein--We would like to have this background in greater detail. We ought to know the mechanism involved, so we will definitely know what we are doing before we go up there. The question is, who should designate to us whom to nominate? I wonder whether the mechanism set up is fortunate from our standpoint in every respect.
Dr. Engle--How many our there on the Nominating Committee?
Dr. Beaton--2 from Maricopa and Pima each, and one for every other County--16 in all.
Dr. Kent--Last year they wanted to put Nelson in there and got together and talked about who wanted whom. They wanted Nelson and Pololsky [ Podolsky ] and Safford--finally Phoenix got together on one person.
Dr. Bernstein--That we bargain with them and that they set up so and so--in other words, it is a smoke-filled room job.
Dr. Beaton--that is not entirely ture [ true ]--let us say that you put up Harry Thompson and somebody from Phoenix would make a good Vice-President.
Dr. Bernstein--We require a AMA directory for this office.
Dr. Rudolph--I so move.
Dr. Neubauer--I second the motion--carried.
Dr. Beaton--One other question, Mr. President--is the meeting going to be on Wednesday, every time.
Dr. Bernstein--No.
Dr. Bernstein--Jury Duty--It is simple to get out of this--obtain form and drop it in the Supervisors Office.
Dr. Engle--I would like to suggest that the County Society mail one to each of the doctors.
There being no further business, meeting was adjourned.
