Board of Directors Meeting, October 7, 1954 Page 2
Dr. Bernstein--Thank you, Roy, for your report. Another think I wanted to see whether the work of the Board of Censors was up to date. In the past I think we were rather far behind and I think the Committee is to be commended for keeping up to date.
Dr. Steen--In regard to that comment--Mary has never given just one name. Under no circumstances is that true.
Dr. Rudolph--Your committee has discussed whether we should make any recommendations about Dr. Schutzbank, but we have not any to make at this time.
Dr. Bernstein--Then let us drop that matter for now, we do not want to turn the Society upside-down for one doctor. We probably all have our own ideas on the subject. He can call on the phone and have his secretary call and do some underhanded sleuthing. I can probably give you a half-dozen things that if we had categorical proof would -- That is a good report.
It was moved by Dr. Harry Thompson that the Report of the Board of Censors be accepted. Motion seconded by Dr. L.E. Beaton and carried.
Hospital Building Committee--Report by Dr. H.E. Thompson--
"You are up to date on these things, I am sure. Dr. Manning tells me tonight that we are in yesterday's paper and there was some notification that they are writing these various firms to get an estimate. The Chairman and I feel we will have to make some move. It was originally our intention to [ crossed out: have ] allow them time after receiving this letter to make an announcement. Well, I think we did get some publicity although not so far from the Society. [ crossed out: We ] I am afraid if we let it ride through the election we will get little or no reaction to it. My idea would run this way, that even thought they committed themselves to looking for this money and are writing, we still have no commitment that they [ crossed out: are ] will give us the money nor have we any grant. I believe we should give it some publicity. Depending what the reaction is tonight about these newspaper articles, the first one might be devoted to that. I think we must put them 'on the spot'. My idea is to go ahead with our publicity and either demand through the newspapers or appear before them as a committee, so that we can get some real publicity on whether the Board of Supervisors is committed or not. I would like a little comment from the Board of Directors."
Dr. Lesemann--"Denny, at the last Board of Directors meeting of the County Hospital, the ball had been thrown in your lap."
Dr. Bernstein--At that meeting we heard this letter and [ crossed out: notified ] modified it slightly and the plan was to present it to the Board of Supervisors and allow them time, and if none were forthcoming, to fire back at them and give them our campaign and Clarence (Kuhlman) was appointed as publicity director, and then we all went out of town with the exception of myself and Clarence, and I elected to carry the ball temporarily. I waited two days after this meeting and then made an appointment with Mr. Kautenberger [ Kautenburger ], and we had lunch and spoke quite some time of this. He was in favor, convinced we needed new hospital setup, and the only way to go about it was to get survey and the amount of money was not out of line and By-Gosh we will get the money. I was smiling along with him--there was nothing else I could do. He promised to do all this. There was one thing--that David Horn Associates were [ crossed out: doing ] a fine outfit and could do a fine job for him, but there were also a list of other hospital building consultants and he thought the proper way to do was to get several bids on this job. That is the way I left it. Then I went away. Since I got back I called him and (he was not in all during the World Series) he said he had written several or many of these consultants and he was waiting and anticipated getting the necessary funds from the Tax Commission. It would seem to me if that is what the situation is right now, why not get publicity in the paper right now--let's do it.
Dr. Manning--To the effect that following list of consulting hospital architects had been written to determine. I do not believe anything will get done before election. I think they are scared to [ crossed out: dr ] throw it out for fear they will have to take a stand. I would like to get an answer to our letter--they should answer, as a matter of courtesy, and commit themselves one way or another.
Dr. Lesemann--They did answer it--the letter is at the County Hospital.
Dr. Manning--I told Charlie Lamb I though the letter should be answered. He said "There is no question of getting the money." I said "What if the question?" and he said "I think it is the age-old issue of whether you will bring it out in the public and make it political."
