Board of Directors Meeting, October 7, 1954 Page 7
Dr. Bernstein--[ crossed out: Why not just ] I just read an article about the program from New York--sponsored by a drug company, and they did not feel it out of line. Last year this fellow George came down on his own time, taught the fellows how to get in front of the camera, helped in technical ways. It would appear to me we ought to cooperate with them to the extent of letting them realize something on it.
Dr. Beaton--We must realize that TV is a commercial thing and if we are going to have it we are going to have to cooperate with them if we want their cooperation.
Dr. Fraser--How do you feel that a sponsor such as the Valley Bank would be bad?
Dr. Hileman--They break in on any continuity of any program with their advertisements.
Dr. Fraser--If you could arrange so that there would be no break in?
Dr. Manning--I spoke about that very thing too. It was the feeling of those two boys that it was not a question of the sponsor but of how he produces his material. I would agree to that to a certain extent but I do think we have received enough benefit from this that we have to consider that the Station will take the time and give it to somebody else or we have to give in a little and give them an opportunity to realize something like $105.00 an evening. They never have broken in and never did break in in these 30 minutes. It was presented at the beginning and at the end.
Dr. Steen--Ads are run in the Medical Journals.
Dr. Bernstein--In New York the TV program is sponsored by Doho Chemical Co.; also all the medical films are by SKF
Dr. Steen--If you threw all the advertising out of your medical journals where would you be with them?
Dr. Bernstein--This Ben Slack is a fine chap and has been most helpful.
Count of hands on Dr. Hileman's motion 4 in favor of motion
7 against.
Motion not carried.
Dr. Beaton--I offer the motion that the TV Committee be authorized to approve a sponsor provided that the sponsor has not direct connection with medicine or any of the medical auxiliaries.
Motion seconded by Dr. Carreras.
Dr. Thompson--Will you accept as an amendment that this be referred to the Society for its approval with recommendation?
Dr. Beaton--I will not accept it.
Dr. Thompson--Then I submit it as a separate motion.
Dr. Lesemann--I seconded the amendment
Dr. Carreras--Why do we have to submit to the Society if we have been selected to do their business for them?
Dr. Lesemann--Should a committee give final approval of a specific choice?
Dr. Manning--I do not think it will make sense to draw [ "draw" crossed out; handwritten "throw" inserted ] it out before the group. I think this Board should approve the sponsorship.
Dr. Engle--I believe the question of having the TV program for this winter should have been approved by the Society.
Dr. Manning--That goes for every other committee then?
Dr. Engle--No.
Dr. Thompson--There are a few of us here that do not believe the TV program should be on. Second. I am sure there are many members of our Society, and we represent about 20% of the Society. There are a few of us here who are not for TV or not for a sponsor and for that reason I think it might be controversial and for that reason should come before the members for their O.K.
Dr. Steen--Yet the By-Laws state that this group shall make decisions.
Dr. Lesemann--I wonder if Harry would accept a change in the amendment?
In favor of amendment - 4
Opposed to amendment - 7
Not voting - 1
Dr. Lesemann--I would like to know if we can make an Amendment that the specific choice of a sponsor be approved by the Board of Directors for final decision?
