DESCRIPTION
Diana Wilson Butler describes her mother Martha McNary Wilson Chilcothe as a feisty teenager when the family came to the Sitgreaves National Forest and White Mountain Apache Reservation in order to develop the timber industry of the area . Martha graduated from McNary High School . As the boss ' daughter , she would often rise to catch the logging trucks at 4:00 am , where she would spend the day driving Caterpillars or whatever other heavy equipment she took a whim to. She also loved riding horses up into the forests to spend the day . Her father , James G . McNary , sent her off to Yale to study , and she returned with degrees in hand , never to use them. Her passion was for the forests and the logging industry and the people who worked in them. She met a logger and married him with the reluctant blessing of her parents . When the McNary family retired , sold out and left McNary , Arizona , Martha stayed behind , content in developing her own town , that of Pinetop , Arizona . Diana describes what it was like growing up in two worlds simultaneously , a logger's daughter who ate on linen tablecloths with silver and crystal . She boasts of the dynamic force her mother was as the Justice of the Peace and an active organizer of various boards designed to establish the town of Pinetop . Martha McNary Wilson Chilcothe was truly a woman ahead of her time .
