Color photograph of smoke from two merging fires over two pickups , June 23 , 2002 Strong winds push the 150,000-acre Rodeo (left) and the 16,000-acre Chediski (right) fire together as firefighters battle to make firebreaks between them. Both battles were lost and the two fires merged into the 4th largest forest fire in U.S . history . In its path was the town of Overgaard . Evacuation orders were issued for about 20,000 people . By noon , June 23 , over 300,000 acres had burned .
