OFFICE OF 1'"
Nt PJrtSlDENT
Dear President Bee, Speaker Weiers, Representative Pearce and Senator Burns:
Pursuant to requirements in the 2007 Health and Welfare Budget, AHCCCS is providing this report on
the effects of changing redetermination policies for certain AHCCCS members. Specifically, the law
requires AHCCCS to report on the effects the six- month redetermination period " for any adult who is at
least twenty- one years of age and who is subject to redetermination of eligibility for temporary assistance
for needy families cash benefits by the department [ of economic security]." In accordance with the law,
the report must include the number of redetermination letters sent out, the number of redetermination
interviews conducted and the number of redetermination interviews resulting in continued acute care
benefits.
Attached to this letter are two tables which provide the information requested. Table One demonstrates
the number of redetermination letters sent out, interviews conducted and interviews resulting in
continued acute care benefits over a seven month period beginning June 2007 through December 2007.
•
•
A total of 55,564 letters were sent, for an average of 7,938 letters sent per month.
A total of 37,734 or 68% of those receiving letters were interviewed, for an average of
5,391 interviews per month.
•
•
Of the 37,734 interviews conducted, 36,009, or 95.4% resulted in continued benefits, for
an average of 5,144 per month.
There were a total of 13,805, or 24.8% of people who were discontinued because they did
not show up for their interviews.
As Table Two indicates, 7,118, or 51.6% of those who did not show for interviews returned to the
AHCCCS program by January 2008.
It should be noted that eligibility is determined for applicants as a family unit, not on an individual basis.
Thus, any termination or continuance of families includes both the children and the adults associated
with that family.
If you have any questions about this report, please contact me at ( 602) 417- 4483.
Sincerely,
Thomas J. Betlach
