From the Editor
As you may have noted from the masthead,
this issue has been brought to
you by a new editor. Putting together
The Thunderbird is a new responsibility
for me - one that is both a
little awesome and tremendously
challenging. However, having been
associated with this institution from
its days as AIFT, I believe I have an
advantage over an editor who might
have only recently arrived on the
scene. Since 1966 I've had the pleasure
of getting to know many of you personally,
and of following your careers
through the years, so I am a believer
of the "thunderbird mystique."
In upcoming issues I hope to keep you
informed of events on campus and
the activities of alumni groups throughout
the world, give you a glimpse of
people who help this school function
(old timers and new comers), and to
feature some of YOu.
Please let me hear from you with
suggestions, ideas, and some of your
thoughts about AGSIM.

Network Results
Being Tabulated
Women in Business is currently tabulating
results of the questionnaire
on networking sent to all women
T-birds in July. The questionnaire
forms the foundation for a network to
increase the exchange of career information
among women graduates and
to build contacts for the club's active
speakers program. Women in Business
encourages the suggestions of all
alumna on the networking effort.

Balloons,
Lutes,
Eggs~to~
Santa
Clara
By Lee Baker ('71)
Notre Dame has a tradition of
football - UCLA has a tradition of
basketball. With a background of
six consecutive years and the seventh
coming up in 1981, AGSIM is building
a tradition of Balloon Races - and
with substantial help from Thunderbirds
overseas.
From the beginning, the event has
been called the Thunderbird Invitational
Balloon Race. As a matter of
fact, we are now at the position where
we can be selective and the event is
truly invitational.
In 1975 nineteen balloons participated.
Steady growth brought the
total up to sixty-two last year. The
biggest increase was in 1978 when the
number jumped from thirty-one to
fifty-one. This year the entry list will
be cut off at sixty-four because the
logistical support to handle an additional
number would not warrant the
relatively slight increase in revenue
thus generated.
2
How Does a Balloon Race Operate?
First, it should be explained that it is
not a race in the usually accepted
definition, in that the object is not to fly
from point "P{' to point "B" in the
shortest time. Instead, it is a test of navigational
proficiency.
To maintain crowd interest over a
longer period of time, the balloons are
divided into two equal groups by
random selection. Early on the first
morning (Saturday) one group of thirtytwo
balloons will lift off from the
campus to participate in the Hare
and Hounds event. The Hare balloon
will be given a lead time of about
15 minutes by the Balloonmeister before
the Hounds start lifting off in
groups of three or four. Their objective
is to land on a "target" which the Hare
balloonist lays out in a suitable field
after flying about 30 minutes. The
Hound balloonists receive points based
on the proximity to the target of their
respective touch-downs. A "bulls-eye"
in the center of the target, netting
100 points, has been scored a few times
in the six years of the Thunderbird
race.
Shortly after the last of the Hare-andHounds
balloons have lifted off, the
spectators will see balloons on their
flight path toward the AGSIM campus.
That group of 32 are in the CN.T,E.
(Convergent Navigational Trajectory
Event) competition. Their aim is to
drop a "bomb" (sack of flour or corn)
onto the target which had been laid out
on the campus after the balloons of
Group flP{' had lifted off. Again, scoring
is based on proximity of each hit to
the target.
Each balloonist in Group "B" has
selected his lift-off point, based on
his estimate of the prevailing winds. The
only limitation on such selection is
that all balloons must lift off outside a
circle with a radius of two miles from
the campus.
On Sunday morning the roles are
reversed, with Group "B" becoming the
Hounds and Group I./{, flying over
the campus in the CN. I.E. event. Thus,
each balloonist has two scores and
the overall winner is determined by
THE THUNDERBIRD FALL 1981
total scoring in the two events. However,
trophies are given to the winners
of each of the four competitive events.
The past few years have included
a special event on Saturday which has
proved to be a crowd-pleaser. A large
"key ring" is attached to a 16 foot
pole implanted in the target area on
campus. Using the two-mile perimeter
circle established for the CN.T.E., the
balloonists fly over the campus trying
to grab the "key ring" from the pole.
(One ground rule is that the "grabber"
must keep one foot on the floor of
the gondola.) To date, nobody has
grabbed the key - which fits the ignition
of a new LUV pickup truck,
donated by "Buzzard" Sands, a Glendale
automobile dealer, who is also a
balloonist.
Eggs-To-Santa Clara
An absolute essential to staging a
balloon race is good weather. If the
ground is wet, the balloons cannot be
laid out for inflation. If the winds
are above nine or ten miles per hour, it
is almost impossible to inflate them
and landings, of course, would be quite
hazardous.
For all six years of the Thunderbird
race, weather conditions have been
favorable - although fingers were
crossed on the eve of the race a couple
of years. Even the skeptics are beginning
to give credit to the "Eggs To
Santa Clara" weather insurance program
which has been used ever since
the first race in 1975.
This unique form of weather insurance
dates back to the years spent
in the Philippines by Else and Lee Baker
('71). They had heard of the Filipinos
sending two dozen eggs to the Sisters of
the Santa Clara church in Manila
to insure good weather for outdoor
parties. The Bakers adopted the practice
and for over three years never had
to move a party inside because of inclement
weather.
For the '75 and '76 races Else arranged
for a Filipino friend to send the
eggs to Santa Clara (making sure they
would take into account the International
Date Line). In 1977 the "weather
THE THUNDERBIRD FALL 1981 3
insurance" mission was taken over
by Luis Sarrosa ('76), who lives in
Phoenix, and each year since he
has made arrangements through
his wife's family in Manila to have the
eggs sent to the good Sisters of
Santa Clara.
Friends of Thunderbird
Scholarship Fund
Each year has seen an increase in the
media coverage of the race. In 1980,
newspapers and magazines in the Valley
carried more than 220 inches of pictures
and stories about the balloon race.
And, of course, the event is a natural
for the TV cameras. The public relations
value of the race to AGSIM has
been increasing each year, along with
enhancement of community relations,
4
especially with the city of Glendale.
For the past several years the event has
been staged by Friends of Thunderbird
with the cooperation and assistance
of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce
and the City of Glendale.
It is not possible to put a price tag
on such public relations and community
relations benefits to AGSIM.
However, we can put a price tag on the
financial benefits to the Friends of
Thunderbird scholarship fund set up
by AGSIM after the first balloon race
in 1975. To date, a total of $88,000 has
gone into the endowment fund. There
is little doubt that the initial goal
of $100,000 set by Friends of Thunderbird
in 1975 will be exceeded this
year. Using only the interest generated
from investing by AGSIM of the
money in the scholarship fund, 16 deserving
students were assisted during
1980 and the spring term of 1981.
These scholarships totalled $4,925.
Selection of the recipients is made by an
AGSIM committee constituted specifically
for that purpose.
Part Played by Overseas Thunderbirds
Overseas Thunderbirds have played
an important role in the efforts to
reach the present level of $88,000 in the
scholarship fund. Their contributions
of items for the Auction held in conjunction
with the International Buffet
on the eve of the balloon race each
year have resulted in substantial dollar
benefits for the fund.
For the first few years, the Auctions
and International Buffet were held in
THE THUNDERBIRD FALL 1981
the AGSIM Dining Hall. However, as
popularity of the event increased, it
became necessary to move the location
to the South Hangar. Of course, this
resulted in an additional function for
the Chairman of the Auction/International
Buffet, Mavis Voris (President
Voris' wife). She became the official
pigeon-eradicator - no small task!
In 1980 the 476 people enjoying the
Auction and Buffet included residents
of the Greater Phoenix Area, balloonists,
sponsors, AGSIM staff/faculty
and Friends of Thunderbird. The most
unique item in the Auction was an
antique lute which Hideo Morishita
('71) had found in his grandfather's
attil= in Japan. It sold for $1,000 in the
Auction.
Among other popular items in the
] 980 Auction was a large 3-D copper
elephant plaque donated by Wallace F.
T.ife ('60). Oscar Cerallo ('70) sent
in an exotic stuffed piranha fish from
Venezuela. A set of collector's stamps
came from D.]. Soberly ('49): a necklace
with gold charms of Tano Gods
from Tony Vlahides ('59) in Puerto
Rico: a hand painted Grecian vase from
David Sullivan ('63); Venezuelan
tapestry from Paul Donnelly ('67); and
from Larry Edstrom ('70) came a
collector's set of porcelain snuff bottles,
replicas of the Ching Dynasty.
The Thunderbird who has contributed
to the Auctions over the longest
period is Mike Santellanes ('56). He
has nol mjsseJ a year since 1971.
(Prior to 1975, when the Auction became
identified with the International
Buffet on the eve of the balloon race,
it had been a fund-raiser for the
Thunderbird Wives Club.) Right behind
Mike on the longevity ladder
comes Terry Thomas ('65) who, since
1972, has each year sent a large box
of embroidprpd items from Hong
Kong. Another regular contributor has
been Robert L. ("Pinkie") Steinmetz
('55) who has been a yearly donor since
1975.
In addition to the funds generated by
the Auction and International Buffet,
there are financial benefits from the
balloon race itself. Each balloon is sponsored
by an individual or a company.
THE THUNDERBIRD FALL 1981
Sponsorships for the 1981 race are
priced at $300, so with 64 balloons in
the event the cash flow prospects
appear favorable. Proceeds from parking
and the sale of programs are helpful
in offsetting the overhead costs of
staging the two-day event.
What is Friends of Thunderbird?
Thunderbirds who graduated prior
to the early 1970's may not be clear on
Friends of Thunderbird and its relationship
to AGSIM. In 1973 the organization
was founded by Mavis
Voris and Doris Paine, wife of Jordan
Paine, who was in the first class graduated
by "the Institute" in 1947. It is
an auxiliary of AGSIM, established to
aid the school and the students in ways
that are beyond the range of the faculty,
administration and budget. Some of
its members are AGSIM alumni and
some are on the faculty; bui most of
them are internationally-minded men
and women of the Greater Phoenix
Area who are interested in the welfare
of AGSIM as an institution and of
the students as individuals.
It was Doris Paine who came up with
the idea of a Balloon Race in 1975
as a fund-raising activity for Friends of
Thunderbird. She served as chairman
of the event in 1975 and 1976, bringing
it through its embryonic years. Her
passing in 1979 was a real loss to
Friends of Thunderbird, to AGSIM and
to her many friends in the Valley,
where she and Jordan had resided for
many years.
The Balloon Race as a
Homecoming Event
In the absence of a Homecoming
Football Game, Thunderbirds are being
encouraged by the Alumni Office
to come back to the campus during the
weekend of the Thunderbird Invitational
Balloon Race, starting with the
Auction and International Buffet on
the eve of the race, which will be held
this year on November 14-15. Focal
point of getting together will be the
Alumni Office where coffee and doughnuts
will be served each morning.
Beer is on the agenda for Saturday
afternoon.
During the 1980 balloon race 60
Thunderbirds stopped by the Alumni
Office for refreshments and friendship
renewals. Tom Bria, Director of
Alumni Relations, is hoping that many
more Thunderbirds will be visiting
the campus this year dunng the Balloon
Race. The Welcome Mat will be
waiting.

Employing Foreign Nationals In The U.S.
AI Ilch
AMA Staff
US. companies wishing to employ
foreign nationals in the US. must be
well versed in the intricate regulations
of the Immigration and Naturalization
Service. US. firms should also be
prepared to provide foreign employees
with general information about the
country and specific data concerning
the manner in which resident and
nonresident aliens are subject to US.
tax laws.
The first concern for a company
hiring a foreign national is whether the
alien is entering the US. as an immigrant
or nonimmigrant. A nonimmigrant
application for a US. visa
would normally be made through the
US. Consular office in the foreign
national's home country. Most aliens
desiring to work for an American
company in the US. would be required
to have either an "HI! or "LI! visa.
In this case, a visa petition is made
through the Immigration and Naturalization
Service. The US. Consular
officer is notified if the petition is
approved. The Consular officer, however,
can deny the visa application
if he or she believes the alien is not
truly eligible.
The H category visas are issued to
aliens who are coming to work in the
US. on a temporary basis and have no
intention of abandoning their foreign
residences. An H-1 visa is issued to
a foreign national of outstanding
ability who is entering the US. to
perform an exceptional service. The
visa is valid for one year and can be
extended only if the alien's services are
still required by the sponsoring employer.
An H-2 visa is issued to an alien
only if he or she is to perform a service
for which an unemployed person in the
US. can not be found. Prior to filing
for a visa petition, the alien must
obtain a labor certification. Forms and
further information regarding this
procedure can be obtained through the
Consular officer or the US. Employment
Service in Washington, D.C. The
6
H-2 visa is good for one year, can
be extended no more than three years
and can not go beyond the terms of
the labor certification or the visa
petition. An H-3 visa is issued to an
alien who comes to the US. to work on
a temporary basis as a trainee. The
visa is good for one year and can be
renewed annually, but usually doesn't
exceed two years or a reasonable
training period.
An L-1 visa is available to an alien
who wishes to transfer to America
from the foreign office or subsidiary
of a US. firm. The foreign national
must have been employed on a continuous
basis for at least one year by
the sponsoring company and must
perform in a capacity that requires a
great deal of specialization.
Immigrants desiring to enter the
US. are usually restricted by numerical
limitations and usually must fall into
certain "preference" categories. Most of
these categories are contingent upon
the foreign national having relatives
who are either US. citizens or enjoy
permanent resident alien status. However,
there are two categories, third
and sixth preference, which are not dependent
on familial relationships.
Immigrants working in the US. usually
fit into these two categories. The
third preference is available to immigrants
whom US. companies are highly
desirous of employing. Such individuals
must be professionals or possess
outstanding talents which will be
considered beneficial to the US.
economy. The sixth preference is available
to immigrants who can fill jobs
for which there is a lack of capable
or willing US. workers.
The preference status requires a visa
petition to be filed with the Immigration
and Naturalization Service or
the proper Consular officer. The
procedures are similar to those involving
nonimmigrant aliens.
The US. immigration regulations are
complex and in a constant state of
change. Personnel managers wishing to
employ foreign nationals must stay
on top of the laws and should be prepared
to become involved in a great
deal of paperwork. Harry Polatsek, a
partner in the law firm of Barst &
Mukamal, New York and Los Angeles,
believes that developing a work sheet,
which includes the alien's work history
and a check list of of his or her important
documents (birth certificate,
diploma, etc.), can be helpful during
immigration procedures. In an interview
in the January/February 1981 issue
of PERSONNEL FORUM, he suggests
that "Establishing a personal contact,
if possible, with a responsible officer at
the Immigration Service office in your
area is very desirable." Mr. Polatsek,
who assists corporations in immigration
matters and leads a course for
AMA/International on employing
foreign nationals in the US., adds that
"You may wish to designate a person in
your office to visit the Immigration
Service and touch base with such a
contact, thus remaining current on
rules, processing times, etc. In some instances,
it may be desirable to seek
sophisticated legal counsel."
Preparing an alien for life in America
is also an important step in the employment
process. The foreign national
should be provided with general
information on US. customs, government,
climate, geography, housing,
banking, medical services, education,
transportation, and the availability of
food, clothing, household goods, etc.
The Handbook for Employees Transferring
to the United States, published
by Ernst & Whinney, is a helpful guide
in these matters. Another helpful
guide is Foreign Nationals in the United
States, published by Price Waterhouse,
which also includes extensive
information on alien taxation in the
US.

New Tax Law to Benefit
Americans Overseas
The new tax law signed recently by
President Reagan improves the tax treatment
of Americans overseas. (see
Spring 1981 issue of The Thunderbird.)
The provisions of the new law call for
an exclusion of foreign source earned income
of $75,000 beginning January I,
1982, and rising by $5,000 incre-ments
to $95,000 in 1986. The new law
also exempts employee contributions
for housing in excess of 16 percent of the
salary of a GS14, step one. The residency
requirement is 11 out of 12
months.

Bevens Slain by Captors
in Guatemala
It is with great regret that we report
that Clifford Bevens ('50) managing
director, Goodyear-Guatemala, who
was kidnapped eight months ago,
was killed by guerrillas on August 13
during an army raid on a house occupied
by revolutionaries near Guatemala
City. He had been kidnapped from his
home in Guatemala City on December 7
of last year. (see The Thunderbird,
Summer 1981 issue.)
Information from Goodyear International
Corporation included the
following about the incident:
"Although details are sketchy, it
appears the Army became suspicious
of activities in an isolated
house located in a mountainous
area west of Guatemala City. As the
Army approached the house,
shooting broke out and there was
a fire fight between the guerrillas
and the soldiers. We (Goodyear)
understand Bevens was shot by one
of the guerrilla guards, who then
killed himself. Four other guerrillas,
who were identified as members
of ORPA (Organization of People
at Arms), were killed."
Cliff Bevens joined Goodyear after
graduating from AGSIM in 1950 (then,
AIFT). He served in posts in Caracas,
Venezuela; Port of Spain, Trinidad;
Maracaibo, Venezuela; Sao Paulo,
Brazil; Istanbul, Turkey; Bangkok, Thailand
and finally Guatemala City,
Guatemala.
Cliff was, throughout his career, a
loyal supporter of AGSIM, both financially
and in the giving of his time
and expertise. He provided information
and photographs for The Thunderbird
and was always active with T-Bird
alumni groups wherever he was located.
Soon after arriving in Guatemala,
he had volunteered to serve as a resource
person for that area.
He is survived by his wife, Louise,
and a son, Christopher. Louise may be
contacted at: 5860 San Juan Drive,
Friday Harbor, WA 98250. Funeral
services were held on August 21 at the
First Methodist Church of Seattle.

will oversee all aspects of the exchange
program, which provides for the
exchange of students, faculty and
library materials as well as executive
training programs and other projects
that may be developed in the initial two
year phase of the agreement.
This agreement is the seventh cooperative
program AGSIM has with
foreign institutions. Other agreements
are in effect with International Institute
for Studies and Training (IIST), in
Japan; the Universidad Autonoma de
Guadalajara, in Mexico; the Oxford
Centre for Management Studies, in
England; the American University in
Cairo, in Egypt; the Escuela Superior de
Administracion y Direccion de Empresas

graduates were in the class and Deborah
Marie Kielty of Modesto, Ca. took
the Barton Kyle Yount Award.
The students elected as their favorite
teachers for the semester: Dr. Jorge
Valdivieso and Elizabeth Zeiner of the
Modern Language Department (a tie),
Dan Green of the World Business
Department, and Dr. Beverly Springer
of the International Studies Department.
THE THUNDERBIRD FALL 1981
Plant Improvements
On a visit to campus one might think
at first glance that the grounds have
been turned over for use as a giant
gopher farm - but the trenches and
piles of dirt are all to the long-range
good. Work has begun on the installation
of a new underground utility
system. In the first phase, water and
gas lines are being installed, and once
these lines are completed work will
begin on the underground electrical system.
According to vice president for
business affairs Lee Stickland, invitations
to bid for the electrical system
will go out in early October.
The facelift for E dorm was completed
in time for fall classes, which began
August 31. In addition to the conversion
to single room accommodations, remodeling
included new bathrooms, fresh
paint, carpeting and air-conditioning.
The underground utility system, the
refurbishing of A, B, E and F dorms and
a portion of the new classroom building
were financed through proceeds
from the school's private issue of
$1,330,000 in tax exempt bonds at
8% percent interest. The bonds were
purchased by The Arizona Bank, 1st Interstate
Bank, United Bank, Valley
National Bank of Arizona and Clay B.
Bedford through the Industrial Development
Authority of Maricopa County.
Director of Corporate and
Foundation Relations
Appointed
James R. Green has joined the staff of
the Office of External Affairs as director
of corporate and foundation relations.
Jim most recently was associated
with Fairleigh Dickinson University
in Rutherford, N.J., where he was
director of the alumni fund and planned
giving. He has also served as development
officer at the University of Puget
Sound, Tacoma, Washington. Green
was with Lake Erie College for nearly
ten years where he gained experience in
admissions and financial aids. He
served as director of planned giving and
assistant to the president before join-ing
the University of Puget Sound. He
received his B.A. from Ohio State
University and his M.A. from Kent State
University.

Dedication
Features Governor
and Honors Trustees
In early June under a blue, cloudless
Arizona sky, and the temperature
over the 1000 mark, the Frank L.
Snell Learning Center was formally
dedicated before a crowd of approximately
400.
Bright yellow and white canopies
shielded the special guests, faculty,
staff, students and friends of the
School from the sun, and coupled
with the rows of white chairs, the
asphalt lot took on a festive air. The
60 flag backdrop added a special
touch of color to the scene.
The entire complex is named in
honor of Frank L. Snell, a founding
trustee and former chairman of the
board of trustees from 1966 to 1972.
Each of the three buildings is named
for a trustee: the late Paul Litchfield,
Clay P. Bedford and Thelma Kieckhefer.
Litchfield served on the
School's National Advisory Council
and joined the board of trustees in
1952, serving until his death in 1959.
Bedford became a trustee in 1964 and
last year obtained trustee-emeritus
status. Mrs. Kieckhefer has been a
member of the board since 1970.
Seven rooms were named in honor
of organizations which have been
regular supporters of the School since
its beginning: The Arizona Bank, Arizona
Public Service Company, Chase
Manhattan Bank, Citibank, Firestone
Tire and Rubber Co., First National
Bank of Arizona (now 1st Interstate
Bank), and Valley National Bank of
Arizona. The Kresge Room is named
in recognition of the foundation's
$100,000 matching grant for construction
of the building.
Governor Bruce Babbitt, the featured
speaker at the dedication, stated
that it was fitting that the learning
center be named for Snell in view of
his continuing efforts on behalf of the
institution. Focusing on learning,
Babbitt said, "Learning is a lifelong
process ... it is a method, not a bunch
10
The crowd of more than
400 included trustees,
faculty, staff, students
and friends of the School.

of books. It is a state of mind, an
approach, and Frank Snell exemplifies
learning in the best sense."
Following the brief ceremony the
Governor and the honored guests visited
with students and visitors at a
reception. Tours were available for
guests who wished to visit the new
classroom.
Frank Snell graciously accepts the honor of
having the learning center named for him.

Brazil ... Byron Battles writes ...
CARNAVAL 1981 - The gathering place
was the Garolta de Ipanema Bar ... the
focal point was Tom Walker's ('78) apartment
in Ipanema. Although there were no
formal reunion activities, the Camaval
seemed to provide enough action to keep a
handful of T-Birds happy. Among those
enjoying sunny Rio were Newton Bufrem
('78) from Curitiba; John and Suzy
(McKinney) Jones ('78), Dan Pucek ('77)
and wife Kathy, and Mike Taverner
('78) all from Sao Paulo; Paulo Gomez
('78) from Los Angeles; Michelle Lionel
('78) from Toronto; John Rechsteiner ('78)
from New York; and Byron Battles ('78)
from Greenville, N.C.
Rio de Janeiro ... According to Mark
Abrams ('76), with The First National Bank
of Boston in Rio, a Brazilian Alumni reunion
was held last November (see photo
this page). In his May letter he advised
that a 4th of July meeting was being planned
and that he was undertaking a large
mailing to all T-Birds in the State
of Sao Paulo.
Plans call for reunions in Sao Paulo in
which prominent guest speakers
would participate, along with informal
weekly or bi-weekly get-to-gethers.
12
Santiago, Chile ... Bob Snyder ('70) and
his wife, Haydee, travelled to Santiago,
Chile in the spring to visit with Haydee's
parents. They visited with Cathy and John
Dowd ('68) and Rocio and Rodrigo Arroyo
('70). John is general manager of Kodak
International and Cathy is an artist with a
show in one of the local galleries. Rodrigo
and Rocio have started a new company,
Quimica Holanda, which imports animal
vaccine for distribution in Chile. They
have a son, Xavier, who is now one.
I. to r. John Dowd, Bob Snyder and Rodrigo
Arroyo.
Brazilian T-Birds got together in November
and again in July.
Norway ... T-Birds in the Oslo area of
Norway gathered May 9 at Sentrum
Squash, a squash-centre owned by Haakon
Korsgaard ('74). Jan A. Strangel ('75)
assisted with the arrangement. The 25 attendees
played squash, had some food and
drinks and plenty of relaxed conversation.
The group agreed that aT-Bird
gathering must be a regular
event. (information sent by Jan Strangel)
Lima, Peru ... Rudy Armijo ('71) of
Phoenix was in Lima on export business
and got together with a group of T-Birds at
the British Cricket Club. Gathering with
Rudy were: John Wolff ('74), deputy
director, CARE, Peru; Fred Leisemig ('47),
general manager, Sears, Lima; Ruddy
Merino ('69), marketing officer, Australian
Embassy, Lima; J. Luis Olaechea ('69),
financial manager, Agroe del Peru, S.A.;
Lon Barash ('71), Banco de la Vivienda del
Peru; William H. Hill ('71), director genera!,
Imexportadora Lahi, S.R.L.; and
Ande Voto-Bernales ('74), La Fabri!, S.A.
I. to r., seated Rudy Armijo, William H. Hill.
Standing, Lon Barash.
Washington, D.C. area T-Birds met at the
home of Dick and Gloria Kelso on May
22 for a casual evening of good food,
libation, swimming and dancing. A good
number of alums showed up and Dr. Jim
Mills from campus attended (third from
right) along with, from the left, Steve
Latour, Brian Marshall, Dean Storm, Dr.
Mills, Gloria and Dick Kelso. (photo, compliments

The Thunderbird Fund
Honor
Roll of
Donors
1980-81
This special insert is devoted to a report on the
Thunderbird Fund, the annual appeal that you
receive by mail or telephone. The American
Graduate School of International Management
relies on independent funding, so the generosity
of alumni, friends, and trustees is of particular
importance.
While we especially want to recognize those
who have shown financial support, this report is
also to express appreciation to the many volunteers
who have worked with the Office of Development
staff to make the alumni fund appeal
successful. Over the years, the devoted and continuous
contributions of time and money have
helped the Graduate School to achieve the stature
it has today.

Three times a year a new group of students
arrive on campus, bringing varied backgrounds
and expectations. Today, they have classes in a
new classroom complex, and practice dialogues
around the Jacuzzi patio fountain. They take
new courses such as international agribusiness,
and international risk management. They live
in newly refurbished dorm rooms. Yet when they
leave here, they still go with the special bond
that is dubbed the "Thunderbird Mystique".
That hasn't changed.

Alumni contributions help AGSIM's
Modern Language Department continue
its outstanding training of international
managers. Major universities, such as
Stanford, are reinstituting foreign language
requirements that were dropped in
the 1960's. The President's Commission
on Foreign Languages and International
Studies (1979) states, IIAt the same time
as our international studies and language
training programs are shrinking, it is
obvious that our national needs for such
training and knowledge are intensifying."

We've come a long way. For a
school just celebrating its 35th year,
AGSIM can point to major accomplishments:
over 14,000 alumni in
2500 multinational companies in 150
countries. In 1970, only 94 companies
recruited on campus. Last
year, there were 272 multinationals
recruiting. In 1970-71, alumni contributions
totaled $9,000; in 1980-81,
the amount was over $90,000.

Puerto Rico ... Jerry Firsty ('57) writes
from Puerto Rico that the annual T-Bird
get-to-gether was held at his home with
about 60 T-Birds, spouses and friends in attendance.
Bob ('56) and Gloria (Peterson)
Shuman ('55) along with Ruth Firsty,
did a lot of the work, and Peter Benziger
('77) did the coordinating. Jerry says he just
furnished the house. Oscar Cucurullo II
('70) sends along a photo of a party at Tim
Reed's apartment and promises a bottle
of the best Puerto Rican rum to the person
who can name all of the T-Birds in the
photo. Send your 10 lists directly to Oscar
at P.O. Box 9653, Santurce, P.R. 00908.
Manama,Bahrain ... David Carpita ('67)
writes that alums there have had three
meetings, with the last one lightly attended
because of travelling schedules. However,
the last meeting was photographed for the
Gulf Daily News, showing Bob Kearns
('69), David Johannensen ('69), Peter
Banko ('70), Julie Fordyce ('77) and Gerald
Kangas ('60).
Singapore ... Alumni activities in Singapore
are on the increase with Jim Echle
('72) moving things along. In February, with
57 known alumni in town, the group
began meeting informally for a drink after
work on a monthly basis. Approximately
18-20 alums have attended the meetings.
The group now meets on a regular basis at
The Tangle Inn, 23-25 Tanglin Rd., the
last Wednesday of each month at 5 :30 p.m.
Jim and all the Singapore alums welcome
all T-Birds passing thru Singapore to
join them.
New York ... The New York alums meet
the first Tuesday of each month at Biff's
Place (525 Lexington Ave.) below the
Halloran House. They advise us that the
crowd has been running 20 or 30 alums
each gathering ... The chapter also held a
reception for Jim Mills and the 20 students
who attended the International Finance
Interim session in New York and
Washington.
Thunderbird Club of New England ... Officers
and directors of the Thunderbird
Club of New England were elected at the
annual meeting of the club in Burlington,
Vermont. The new prexy is Jay Donovan
('79), taking over from Stephen Hall.
Other officers elected were: vice president,
Alan Edmonds ('76); secretary, Robert
Babson ('80); and treasurer, Susanne
Remar ('79).
Chris Morrison ('73), general manager
of the Radisson, and John Esping
('74) agreed to act as coordinators of the
"Thunderbird Winter '81 Ski Weekend."
New England and New York Thunderbirds
are invited to keep a weather eye out
for more details.
THE THUNDERBIRD FALL 1981
Costa Rica ... May 9 was the day for the
annual picnic for Costa Rican Alumni.
Betty Dahlstrom writes that the affair was
held at the home of Bill Barbee ('69), with
Mike Santelianes ('60) domg the barbecue
honors. In addition to Bill and Mike and
their spouses, others attending were:
Steve Case ('76), Jim Dahlstrom ('58), Glen
Glad ('63), Tom Granger ('65), Bob Jones
('70), Don Noble ('60), Frank Rivera
('70), Russ Sexauer ('57), Don Shurtleff
('48) and Jim Stanley ('53).
June 30 was another occasion for the
Costa Rican T-Birds to get together at
the Colon Club to greet Dr. and Mrs. Voris
who were in San Jose. Mrs. Voris reported
that turnout was small due to alums dispersing
to avoid the "winter" rainy season.
The photos indicate however, that the
small group had a great time.
I. to r., Mavis Voris, Mickand Emily
Santellanes and Dr. Voris at June meeting
in Costa Rica.
Dallas, Texas ... The Dallas-Fort Worth
Alumni Group met on May 22 at Churchill's
Polo Tavern with about 40 T-Birds present.
The school's new audio visual slide presentation
was shown and Dave Trott ('74)
reports that the group had positive feelings
about the school's effort in preparing
a presentation. However there were several
suggestions for ways to improve the
show focused toward alums.
The DFW Association will soon be planning
an October meeting, so watch for
your notices.
Houston, Texas ... A "Pub-Party" was
held July 10 at the Bavarian Beer Gardens.
Ben Miedema reports: " .. . event
proceeded as scheduled ... however, a
rainstorm with lots of thunder and
lightning had all 50 participants indoors."
I. to r., Glen Glad, Chuck and Miren

Second World
Affairs Conference:
Focus on the Pacific Rim
By Stephen Bernheim
On September 17 and 18,1981, the
Second Annual World Affairs Conference
(WAC) took place on the AGSIM
campus. The conference topic was
"The Pacific Rim: Prospects for
Expanding International Trade."
Keynote speaker for the kick-off
banquet was Mr. Hideo Itokawa, a
Japanese systems analyst and "futurologist."
Itokawa, who started his professional
career as an aeronautical
engineer, is director of the Tokyo-based
Systems Research Institute and is
the author of the book, Case D: Unseen
Flood, a computer proiection of a
worst-case analysis for the future of
Japan.
Topics for the two-day conference
workshops include: political stability
in the ASEAN area and its effects on
business investment and international
trade; trade prospects and investment
climate in the People's Republic of
China (PRC); prospects for further industrial
development for the "Supercompetitors":
Hong Kong, Taiwan,
Singapore and South Korea; and Japan:
the new post-industrial age.
Several participants in the round-table
discussions were:
14
• Robert Hobson of San Jose, California,
manager of international
marketing in the Far East and Western
Hemisphere for General Electric.
Dr. Hobson specializes in energy
development plans for the Pacific
Rim area.
• Yung-huan Jo of Arizona State
University in Tempe, a specialist in
Chinese political economy. Professor
Io is currently conducting research
as a Fulbright Scholar at
Keio University in Tokyo.
A Unique Conference
The event was an opportunity for
leaders of government, industry and
academia to come together to discuss
major economic issues. But drawing
on AGSIM's unique resources, the WAC
pursued several additionat yet no
less important, aims.
The WAC is an extra-curricular,
completely practical attempt by members
of the AGSIM community to
help promote competence in dealing effectively
with people from other
countries, and stresses the importance
of worldwide economic and political
harmony today and in the future. It is
organized entirely by students.
"The school requires unusual talents
on the part of its students/' says WAC
chairperson Nancy Hague, "and one
way the WAC helps in this is by providing
informal opportunities to talk
with foreign businessmen after the
formal roundtable discussions and
during the conference's social events."
Hague adds that roundtable participants
were also available for meetings
with classes on the day prior to the
conference.
"Multinational corporations will
remain a dominant force in the world
market system for years to come/' continues
Matthew Airmet, chairperson of
the WAC program committee. "As
this continues, everyone participating
in the international business community
must take into account local
and regional attitudes, so that everyone
is not trying merely to impose their
own values upon others."
Airmet also believes that because the
WAC brings together issues of finance,
marketing and regional studies,
student interest in the conference will
be generated outside of areas of geographical
concentration. This interaction
brings together students and
professors from each area of the schoot
offering a common ground upon which
to exchange opinions, ideas and theories.
"This/' says Martin Sours, professor
of International Studies and
faculty advisor to the conference, "helps
improve faculty/student relations by
putting students and faculty on a more
co-equal footing. Students and professors
both are active participants in
the discussions."
Lastly, the WAC "causes interaction
between the school and businessmen
on the state and local level/, says vice
president of external.affairs Dr. Robert
Horn. "The WAC helps the general
public and the local business community
to become more aware of
AGSIM and the future of international
trade generally."
Growing World Trade
Arizona's record of growth in international
trade over the last ten years
has been astounding. According to
figures supplied by the Arizona World
Trade Association, increases in manufacturing
production has been responsible
for a fifty percent increase in
the number of Arizona manufacturingrelated
jobs in the past decade. In
1979, the value of exported manufactured
goods rose to more than 1.1
billion dollars, up 52 percent in only
two years. And, what is perhaps a key
statistic, in the 1970's, manufactured
exports grew twice as fast as manufacturing
in general.
Responsible in part for this impressive
growth has been the International
Trade Section in the Arizona Office of
Economic Planning and Development
(OEPAD), associated with the office
of Governor Bruce Babbitt.
OEPAD China Conference
The OEPAD has directly profited
from AGSIM's program. On its staff as
international trade specialist is Dirk
Moonen (T-Bird '77). Coincidentally,
Moonen organized a conference called
"Doing Business in China," cosponsored
by OEPAD, the Arizona
World Trade Association and the U.S.
Department of Commerce. This conference
took place September 16,
the day prior to the WAC banquet .
As a consequence, many participants
in the OEPAD conference attended
the WAC at AGSIM, while China
experts from campus complemented
the OEPAD conference. One of the
three Chinese professors taking courses
at AGSIM under the recently inaugurated
exchange program with the
PRe's Beijing Institute of Foreign
Trade (see T-Bird, Winter 1980-81)
joined a discussion of the Chinese view
of marketing at the OEPAD
conference.
THE THUNDERBIRD FALL 1981
Pacific Basin Institute
Additional testimony to the growing
interest in Pacific Rim trade is the
effort under way to create 0 Pacific
Basin Institute (PBI) in Scottsdale.
Secretary of the PBI is William Voris,
president of AGSIM.
"The PBI has five broad purposes,"
Voris explains. "First, it will conduct
practical studies to help business
and governments research near-term
policy decisions. Second, it will explore
the long-run potential for developing
the region's trade and investment.
Third, by publicizing its research, it will
encourage regional communication
and cooperation. Fourth, we will develop
and maintain a computerized
data bank of regional trade and investment
resources. Finally, the Institute
plans to serve as a center for expanding
the concept of private enterprise
among the Pacific Basin nations."
Voris is optimistic about the prospects
for AGSIM student participation
in the Institute and its projects, and
believes that participating students
planning careers in Pacific region trade
will be off to a tremendous start.
"The WAC also provides a valuable
complement to our course offerings
in business, cultural studies ond
language," he adds.
