Corporations Receive
Educational Challenge
Representatives of leading
multinational corporations were
challenged to become involved in
planning the education of the
graduates they will hire. Issuing
the challenge was Dr. William
Voris, President of AGSIM, who
opened the first meeting of the
school's World Business AdviSOry
Council.
"AGSIM is providing the model
for training the international
business executives of the future,"
Voris said. "Tell us what it takes to
be a successful corporate executive,
and we'll include it in our thinking
and planning. We want to work
with multinational corporations in
a meaningful way."
The council represented the
main sources of employment for
AGSIM graduates with a total of
more than 1,600 graduates
employed by firms represented on
the council. "You obviously like
what you get from this school. We
want to keep current so you
continue to recruit our graduates,"
Voris said.
Emphasizing the need for
continuing executive education in
the international arena, Voris said
the school intends to provide the
educational link between the
executive's U.S. experience and the
job assignment abroad. The school
currently offers a customized
executive training through its
Intercom program.
Voris also suggested an

exchange program in which
companies might send
representatives to the campus to
teach and interact with the
students. "We also want to have
students and faculty spend time
with your companies," he said.
Stressing the practical approach
of the school's curriculum, Voris
asked the corporations to open
their doors to faculty who are
doing research to keep current in
their field.
The council will meet annually
for general meetings with
subcommittees on faculty
development and curriculum
meeting at other times. More than
fifty companies have agreed to
participate in the council.
Executives from major
corporations across the nation
attended the organizational
meeting of the World Business
AdviSOry Council March 15.
Opening the two-day event was
Dr. William Voris, who outlined
the purpose of the council at the
Monday evening dinner for the
executives. Speakers at the
business meeting, held the
following day, were Dr. Clifton
Cox, Chair of the World Business
Department, who moderated the
program; Dr. Taeho Kim, Professor
of World Business; Dr. Carl Frear,
Professor of World Business;
Charles Mannel, Vice President for
Corporate Relations; and John
Arthur, Dean of Admissions. Dr.
Robert T. Moran of the
International Studies Department
was the luncheon speaker on
Tuesday.
Cox began the Tuesday meeting,
saying that the future of the world
depends more on international
business, not less. He pointed to
today's poor business environment
in which protectionism is growing,
currency restrictions are increasing,
and the total export market is not
growing. Successful companies
must be willing to adjust to
particular countries, they must
have detailed knowledge of the
countries before entering, and they
must know which people are
important. "It is more important
than ever that you have
well-trained, highly qualified
people," he said.
Cox compared AGSIM to a
corporation, saying, ''We're going
to assume that we have a product
at this school-a student." "We
truly want to get your input
concerning our product," he added.
RA W MATERIAL
John Arthur, Dean of
Admissions, said the first step in
evaluating a prospective student
(the "raw material") is the grade
point average and GMAT score.
Below a certain score, students are
not even considered. Work and
travel experience, language ability,
an essay, and three references are
taken into account. "What you're
putting out depends very much on
what you're putting in," he said.
Foreign students are considered on
the same criteria; only those whose
THUNDERBIRD MAGAZINE SUMMER 1983
undergraduate study was not in
English are required to take the
Test of English as a Foreign
Language. They are aiso not
required to take the GMAT.
Several participants suggested
that admissions standards be
upgraded and that a personal
interview be required for
admission. Arthur replied that this
was desirable but logistically hard
to put into effect. He added that
AGSIM's alumni educational
counselors around the world are
helpful by talking with students in
their areas and recommending
them if they think they are good
material. Arthur stressed the
importance of alumni counselors
using up-to-date information about
the school.
Another proposal was to limit
the amount of credit given for
introductory business courses or to
disallow credit altogether. Another
council member noted the dearth
of students with a technical
background. "AGSIM tries to
attract those students; they are the
easiest to place," Arthur said.
AGSIM's recruiting efforts were
next on the agenda. According to
Arthur, students are attracted to
AGSIM because of a variety of
factors, particularly its general

reputation. "Our alumni are a
strong element of support. We
have a very extensive campus
visitation program. Sixty-five
percent of all recruiting is done by
alumni," he said. AGSIM's student
profile for the spring semester
comprised 944 students from 56
countries with degrees in 77
undergraduate fields of study. The
average age is 26 with 35 percent
women. Arthur also noted that
about 60 percent (perhaps less) of
the students are corning directly
from college. "Generally, there are
about 2,000 applications for about
700 to 900 entering places each
year. Pragmatism, international
scope, placement opportunities
and one-year completion-those
are what motivate students to
come here," Arthur said.
MANUFACTURING PROCESS
Dr. Carl Frear explained how
AGSIM goes about turning out its
finished product. The difference
between the MIM and an MBA, he
explained, is that the MIM is
broader in nature, has an
international context, and tries to
produce a general management
capability in graduates. He said
that AGSIM tries to instill in the
students a common body of
knowledge, which includes
product marketing, finance,
business, accounting, law, and
analysis of business strategies.
Other areas essential for
international management are
international organizational
behavior and how to do
international research-how to
gather data and what to do with
data. The purpose is to prepare
them to have overall business
knowledge, not specialization.
"We try to prepare a student in
terms of the common body of
knowledge and then add on to
that. We believe they should have
computer literacy, international
trade and finance capability, some
idea of international corporate
finance and international
marketing management and
international business strategies
and policies. Those are the

minimum we think a student
should have to graduate," he said.
Computer literacy was
mentioned by council members as
an important need. An
introductory level computer course
was mentioned as a possibility.
"Seven professors now use a
computer project in their classes,"
Frear said. "We expect that to go
to 11 or 12."
A move to a IS-month program
was suggested by several council
members. "Serious consideration is
being given to four semesters,"
Voris said. "The fourth semester
would be primarily business
training. We are keeping the
tripartite model intact while
strengthening world business."
MARKETING THE
FINISHED PRODUCT
Charles Mannel discussed
"selling the rroduct" -the
marketing 0 students via the
Career Services Center. He said
that Dr. Voris has been a staunch
supporter of the career center and
that Voris' philosophy is that a
graduate not well-placed in a
successful position is not a
successful graduate. There has
been a 300 percent increase in the
number of companies corning to
campus over the past five years,
Mannel said, and last year's low
recruitment was an exception.
Fifteen hundred resume books go
out each semester. The career
center offers closed interviewing so
that "you can pick out students
you want to talk to," Mannel said.
Employers should also consider
the "Thunderbird mystique" when
hiring. "When you hire aT-Bird,
you don't hire a graduate, you hire
a network," Mannel said. He told
the story of a graduate who had
been assigned to Colombia. He
contacted T-Birds there to let them
know he was corning. Five of them
met him at the airport and had
arranged an apartment,
transportation, and local contacts.

PRODUCTION MANAGERS
The discussion of faculty and
curriculum focused mainly on a
professor/industry exchange.
Professors could be sent back to a
business situation to update their
knowledge, or, in the case of those
with degrees but no "hands-on"
experience, to gain first-hand
knowledge. Cox said, "Could your
company take a faculty member,
assign him work, give him some
experience?" In return, executives
were invited to come on campus
for a time and teach, perhaps with
the option of taking classes free of
charge while here. Council
members were enthusiastic about
these proposals. Time frames
suggested for the exchanges
ranged from six weeks to a year.
One council member said, "If we
had a greater length of time, we
could design a more meaningful
work experience than in six weeks
or three months." He suggested
freeing professors for 12 to 18
months in order to offer them an
opportuni ty to work a full cycle.
It was also suggested that
professors be encouraged to take
computer training or that the
administration decide what
training professors needed and
then run classes for them on
campus.
Tenure seemed to be a puzzling
concept to most business people.
At AGSIM, a full professor must
THUNDERBIRD MAGAZINE SUMMER 1983
teach a minimum of two years
before he can be offered tenure; an
associate professor, three years;
and an assistant professor, six
years. Voris explained that tenure
protects the professor from outside
forces and is meant to offer
"freedom of speech in the
classroom, not to guarantee a life
of leisure."
Dr. Robert T. Moran spoke on
cultural differences at the
conclusion of the meeting. He said
that business people must learn to
use and manage cultural
differences. "Culture serves as a
blinder," he said. "There's a lot of
information but it doesn't get in to
be processed. Remove the blinders
so the information can get in and
be managed. If a person is
insensitive to cultural differences
but fluent in the language, all it
means is that he can make a fool
of himself fluently."

Britain . •• One of the world's foremost
authorities on insurance and risk
management will end his visit at
AGSIM at the end of the 1983
summer semester. He is Dr. Robert
Carter, visiting professor from
Nottingham University in England.
Carter was approached by AGSIM
in November 1981 to start a
program of insurance and risk
management. "They inquired
around as to who could teach
international insurance and my hat
seemed to come out of the bag,"
Carter said. "At that time, I'd been
at Nottingham University almost
13 years. I hadn't taken any leave
of absence, any sabbaticals, and I
thought it was about time."
His first semester was spent
teaching economics and
international insurance. He went
on to teach a Winterim course, and
taught international insurance and
international risk management in
the spring and summer semesters.
Carter described his insurance
classes as the supply side of
market. The students look at
"what insurance is, what role it
Robert Carter performs in the economy, not just
as a risk-bearing mechanism but
also trying to look at the totality of
the insurance operation, which,
among other things, means that
insurance companies are some of
the largest institutional investors
around." The students also study
the supply of insurance, how an
insurance company operates, the
various functions it performs, and
how it prices its product and
arrives at premium rates. "The risk

insurance is concerned, is the

trying to get some operative
definition of risk, looking primarily
at pure risks - the types of risks
that insurance can handle - but
then going on from there to deal
with risk identification and risk
measurement, together often called
risk analysis," Carter said. The
various ways in which risk can be
handled - of which insurance is
only a part - are also dealt with.
Carter is truly an authority on
his subject. He has eleven books tc his credit, two translated into omes Japanese and one into Spanish,
and he has written
numerous articles for •••
various journals. "I
distributed them over a number of
ships, spreading the risk; a form of
insurance, you see." He also cited
a form of life insurance popular in
the days of the Roman Empire -
the burial club. "You paid into the
club and then when you departed
this mortal life, the club paid your
funeral expenses," he explained.
write quite a lot," he said. "My
chair in England is the only
insurance chair and I think it's
extremely important to try to keep
up relations between academics
and the industry."
Commenting about his year at
AGSIM, he said, "I've been very
pleased to be here ... I like the
school, I like the environment. I
expect that I'm very much more an
applied economist . . . and so ...
the sort of teaching that goes on
here - it appeals to me. I find that
it's as . . . intellectually challenging
to students and to the lecturers to
try to understand the prinCiples of
the subject and apply them. This is
one of the things I like about
AGSIM - people are interested in
the application and the theory
The first written insurance
contract was one from about 1340
in Flanders, and Carter said the
system really took off in the 17th
century. The origin of Lloyd's of
London goes back to a 17th
century coffeehouse. "I hope it
doesn't sound chauvinistic to say
that the English really developed
the system to the sort of art that it
is today," he said. "The great fire
of London in 1666 really sent the
fire insurance business off into
orbit. I'll deliberately say 'going
into orbit' because as things have
developed, so new forms of
insurance have been devised. It to
Thunderbird
too."
He has, however, been a bit
disappointed in the weather,
which has provided one of
Arizona's wettest years. "Some of
the fellows here say they're just
trying to make me feel at horne. I
wish they'd forget that," he
sighed.
When asked his opinion of the
students, Carter said, "Frankly,
the great majority of students are
good students who are here to do
serious work, but in any student
body you're going to get the odd
few who are going to try to find
the easy way out. If there are soft
options, they pick the soft options.
I like the school," he added, "I like
the student body and I regret that
I can't stay."
Carter had equally kind words to
THUNDERBIRD MAG.A.ZINE SUMMER 1983
say about AGSIM's faculty. "I get
on well with them," he said. "This
is one of the great pleasures of
having been here. If it wasn't for
family ties, I would be very happy
to settle down here."
Carter's insurance background is
both industrial and educational.
After becoming professionally
qualified in the insurance industry,
he took an external degree at
London University and then
worked in the industry for a time.
He moved out of industry and into
teaching at Brighton on the south
coast of England. While there, he
took his Ph.D. at Sussex
University. Then, nearly fourteen
years ago, he went to Nottingham
University (in Robin Hood
country) where he teaches in the
department of industrial
economics.
According to Carter, the origins
of insurance go back into antiquity.
"The basis of insurance is
spreading the risk," he said. "You
can cite things like the Chinese
merchants, 2000 BC, sailing down
the Yangtze. Rather than put all
their goods in one ship, they
wasn't so many years ago that the
first insurance was provided for
satellites."
According to Carter, the
influence of insurance is much
more widespread than one would
think. "One of the things that I
like about the industry is that it
really does touch every aspect of
human life and it also draws on
every sort of academic diSCipline."
He gave the example of someone
writing an all-risk insurance
contract for a new darn to be built.
"If you're going to be asked to
write the insurance for that ...
type of project then you're going
to require an awful lot of, not
least, civil engineering [and]
geological expertise. On the other
hand, if you're in the business of
writing life insurance on so-called
substandard risks . . . then you
need a great deal of medical
knowledge."
Carter ended the interview
saying, "It's fascinating ... I can
interest myself in finance and
economics and technical sides of
things - all sorts."

Bevens Memorial
Four ten-inch television monitors
for video cassettes are the main
feature of the new Bevens
Memorial Audiovisual Room. The
room is located in the Barton Kyle
Yount Memorial Library on the
Thunderbird Campus.
Each color monitor is equipped
with headphones and automatic
turn-off signals. The entire system
can easily be operated by the
student without assistance from
library staff.
Although initial use is expected
mainly from language and Interad
students, other classes are
expected to use the facilities in the
future.
The room is dedica ted to Clifford
Bevens, '50, an employee of
Goodyear who was killed in
Guatemala in 1981 after being held
captive for nine months by
terrorists.
The equipment and the room
remodeling were made possible by
a gift from Louise Bevens, widow
of Cliff Bevens. More than 150
alumni and friends also donated to
the memorial fund.
Dedication ceremonies were held
on March 21 and were attended by
the widow, Louise Bevens; the
Bevens' son Christopher; and
invited guests. Louise Bevens and

Hot Air Affair
Spawns Gifts
The 1982 Hot Air Affair, a
dinner, international auction and
calcutta, held the evening before
the Balloon Race, was a smashing
success, netting $19,000 for the
Friends of Thunderbird scholarship
fund. Ten thousand dollars of that
total was brought in by the
auction. According to Mavis Voris,
the alumni donations were the
outstanding, sought-after hits of
the event. Rosa Gomez, '75,
chairwoman of alumni auction
gifts, sends her sincere gratitude to
the alums, stateside and overseas,
who responded to her letter.
This year's international auction
will take place November 11 and
the alumni gift parties which
caught on last year as a way to
raise donations for the auction are
expected to be popular again this
year.
Among last year's gift party
givers were Thad and Phylis
Chamberlain, '55, who gave a
Panama party, and Mr. and Mrs.
A.B. Robbs, parents of Armond
Bruce Robbs, '83, who gathered
together alumni from Spain.
President Visits
Far East Alumni
Dr. William Voris took a
two-week trip to Asia April 24 -
May 10 to discuss extension of the
exchange agreement with Beijing
Institute of Foreign Trade (BIFT).
The five-year agreement, signed
in October, 1980, provides for the
exchange of students, professors,
and teaching materials. It is BIFT's
first exchange program with an
institution outside the People's
Republic of China (PRC).
According to Steve Beaver, dean of
students, a delegation of 12 from
BIFT visited the U.s. in the spring
of 1979. They visited Stanford,
Berkeley, AGSIM, Northwestern,
the University of Chicago,
Georgetown, Columbia, Harvard
and MIT. They chose AGSIM.
Including the four students who
are visiting Beijing this summer,
AGSIM has sent a total of 20
exchange students. BIFT has sent
eight junior faculty members here
to study and six have received
MIM degrees. The Chinese
students are graduates of BIFT
who have been targeted for
teaching assignments when they
return to China. AGSIM students
are chosen by a faculty committee
on the basis of their proficiency in
Chinese, interest in China, and
academic background.
Beaver said, "The exchange
program has provided valuable
training for the BIFT participants
and enabled the entire AGSIM
community to get to know and
learn from a number of mainland
Chinese first-hand. It has enabled
limited numbers of our students to
have the opportunity to study and
travel in the PRe."
AGSIM currently has exchange
programs with institutions in
Mexico, Japan, England, and
Spain.
Editor's Note: The next issue of the
Thunderbird Magazine will carry a full
report of President Voris's trip with photos
of the alumni activities that took place.

THUNDERBIRD MAGAZjNE SUMMER 1983
,QUE PASA?
San Francisco A letter from Robert J.
Leurck, '81, president of the Northern
California T-Bird group, appeals for
increased participation in the activities
planned for the chapter this year. In
true T-Bird fashion, the events to
which Leurck hopes alums will flock
are international and social in nature.
They include: "A Day on the Bay" - a
catered afternoon on the beautiful San
Francisco Bay, "Bat the Big One" - a
softball team competing with other
alumni associations, "Bears, Bulls, and
Bellies" - a bimonthly investment club,
"Valley Belles" - a tour of Napa's
finest, and "Oriental Delights" - a dim
sum luncheon in Chinatown. Ideas for
other gatherings, apart from the
regular picnics, dinners, and monthly
roosts, should be addressed to
treasurer/secretary Maryann Soo, '81 at
(415) 593-0434 or 573-8700.
14
Hawaii Hawaiian T-Birds gathered for
an evening of fun, food, and drink in
honor of Dr. Robert Horn, vice
president for external affairs for
AGSIM. The event was held April 15
at the home of M. John Butler, '64.
Houston Ben Miedema, '77, reports
that 39 people attended Dr. Voris'
speech and dinner February 14 at the
Four Seasons Hotel. Dr. Voris spoke
on "Changing Needs for Education in
International Business."
Los Angeles Los Angeles T-Birds
elected new officers at their February 3
board meeting at Ichabod Crane's in
Torrance. Greg Hansen, '78, was
elected president; Mary Carney, '76,
vice president; Jeri Towner, '78,
treasurer, and Gary Luhrman, '82,
secretary.
A monthly newsletter, the T-Bird
tiyer, is being edited by Mary Carney.
Alumni are asked to send ideas,
suggestions, and comments to Mary at
62 W. Alegria, Sierra Madre, CA
90025. Please send invitations no later
than the fifth of the month preceding
the date of the event. Anyone who
has interest in working on a
newsletter and wants to volunteer will
certainly be considered.
Kansas City Kansas City T-Birds were
joined for dinner at the Hereford
House March 25 by Julia Harvey,
AGSIM director of college relations.
They send special thanks to Gail and
Larry Rice, '70, for their wonderful
Christmas party.
Jacksonville, FL A Jacksonville alumni
chapter has been formed by Bill Ross,
'57 and William Hill, '71. T-Birds Egan
and Joy Anderson, '49; Bob and
Marian Brock, '48; Clarke and Corey
Todd, '65; Randy and Carol Wright,
'67; David Miller, '57; Bill and Libby
Ross, '57, and Bill and Alice Hill, '71
attended the first meeting at the
Sheraton at St. John's Place. The
response was overwhelming and the
next gathering was a gala Dutch treat
cocktail party and dinner at Bill Hill's
home in Ponte Vedra Beach. New
attendees were Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur
H. Davidson, '57. Bill writes that they
plan to have quarterly meetings and
the next gathering was scheduled to
be hosted by Wilbur and Joyce
Davidson in late April.
Mexico Marcos Garay, '79, is the
newly elected president of the Mexico
T-Birds. Other T-Birds elected were
John Kozuck, '58, vice president; Paul
Reiss, '60, secretary; and Randy Pike,
'78, treasurer.
Marcos reports that 52 T-Birds, one
of the largest gatherings in many
years, attended the November 5
luncheon at the University Club to
hear Lawrence Route, the Wall Street
Journal correspondent in Mexico.
Thirty-seven T-Birds turned out for
the Christmas party held at the hilltop
home of George and Beverly Blake,
'47, overlooking Mexico City.
According to Marcos, it was not very
easy to get to, but the alums and
spouses who managed to find their
way had a terrific time.
Phoenix T-Bird Tuesdays at the Velvet
Turtle are going strong! Associated
Thunderbirds (AGSIM - TGSIMI AlFf)
alumni, spouses, and friends are alive
and well at the monthly meetings.
Third Thursdays at the Phoenix Hilton
are also well-attended. Wally Parker,
director of INTERCOM, spoke at the
March 17 luncheon. Speaking in April
was William K. Rapp, vice-president
and manager of the Valley National
Bank of Arizona - international
department, and in May, Jim Haynes
of the Phoenix Metropolitan Chamber
of Commerce.
Seattle The Seattle chapter had a joint
meeting with AIESEC (Association
Internationale des Etudiants en
Sciences Economiques et
Commerciales) April 8 at the
Waterfront Activities Center at the
University of Washington.
THUNDERBIRD MAGAZINE SUMMER 1983
Singapore Thunderbird alumni in
Singapore held their annual Christmas
party December 17 at Limetree Hill,
the home of Phil Gibson, '72. Forty
people attended for cocktails and a
buffet in the garden lit by over 400
candles. Special guests were Dr. and
Mrs. Frank Voris, cousin of AGSIM
president Bill Voris.
Jim and Michiyo Echle, '72, held
their annual Japanese New Year's
party and copious amounts of sake
were consumed. Beau, '68, and Mary
Walker hosted a Middle East party
and Dianne Sherman, '78, held a
Mexican party. "We still keep up the
T-Bird tradition of theme nights,"
wrote Phil Gibson.
Washington, DC DC T-Birds
participated in the second annual
seminar, "Who's Planning Your
Career?", held in conjunction with the
Stanford Business School Alumni
Association, and business school
alumni associations of Columbia,
Dartmouth (Amos Tuck), Harvard,
MIT (Sloan), the University of
Pennsylvania (Wharton), the
University of Virginia (Colgate
Darden), and Yale.
Chicago Chicago T-Birds met at the
Swedish Club for cocktails and hors
d'oeuvres April 17, reports Eric
Denniston '80.
On April 18 and 19, Carol Hazelett,
director of career services, hosted the
AGSIM booth at the 46th Chicago
World Trade Conference at the
Chicago Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Dallas alums were hard-hit by spring
fever. April 30 was the starting date of
a 24-hour countdown to May Day
hosted in the lovely East Dallas home
of Bob and Lisa Huff, '57. Rosalie
Johnson's "29 and holding" birthday
party provided the excuse for another
fun get-together - no gifts were
required, just plenty of verbal abuse!
There were no details at press time
but we can be sure that a good time
was had by all.
Puerto Rico Peter L. Benziger, '77,
reports a very successful T-Bird party
and promises to send more details
soon.
Denver John D. Cullinan, '77, is
organizing Denver T-Bird gatherings.
For further details, call John at
377-1810, Marshall Gabin, '80, at
771-3455, or Halina Bojarski, '81, at
431-9400.
