the school's 82nd commence men t

In his speech, Thomsen called for
graduates to continue to gain
knowledge of the international
economic and political problems of
the world. He cited the world
situation of today, " ... a world
preoccupied on the one hand with
the east-west dialogue, which is
concerned with who rules the
world in geopolitical terms, as well
as with the north-south dialogue,
which concerns itself with who

He then discussed his
perceptions of the socio-economic
realities of different parts of the
world-Latin America, Africa, the
Middle East, Southeast Asia, the
Pacific Basin and Europe.
He stated that the free enterprise
system has produced unprecedented
wealth in past generations,

"On the average, a man with one
foot on a hot stove and one foot on
a block of ice can be considered
comfortable ."
With this analogy in mind, consider
a recent random sample survey
of AGSIM alumni that gave the
following profile of the "average"
Thunderbird.
He is between 40 and 45 years
old, from the class of 1969, with an
M.LM. degree emphasizing marketing.
Our average alumnus lives in
the northeastern United States with
his wife and two children. He is in
an upper management position,
and the annual income is between
$35,000 and $45,000.
Perhaps more accurate are profiles
for each five-year class
grouping.
1947-51 Male, age 60 years, married,
supporting 2.5 people
on a household income of
$45,-50,000, he is in an upper
management level position
in the marketing/sales
field. He holds a B.F. T. degree
from A.LF.T.
1952-56 Male, 55 years old, he is
married, with four in his
family, and a household income
between $45-50,000.

field.
1962-66 Male, age 45 years, this
alumnus has a 14 percent
chance of having an advanced
degree in addition
to the B.F.T. degree, and is
just as likely to be in
marketing as in finance. He
supports a family of four
people, with a household
income of $40-50,000.
1967-71 Male, 40 years old, married,

1972-76 Male, age 35 years, this
alumnus has a fifty-fifty
chance of being married,
with a family of 3 people.
He received the M.I.M. degree
and has a 10 percen t
chance of having an advanced
degree in another
field. His class had a split
between marketing and finance
majors, and he holds
a mid-to-uppermanagement
position, with
a household income of $45-
50,000.
1977-81 Male, age 30 years, this
alumnus is most likely to
be single, and 25 percent of
his classmates hold another
advanced degree besides the
M.LM. He majored in
marketing and is in an entry-
level to midmanagement
position, supporting
1.7 people on a
household income between
$20-30,000.
Of the questionnaire respondees,
93 percent are U.S. citizens, and
almost 20 percent live overseas.
One-third reported incomes of
$50,000 or more. Fifty-two percent
majored in marketing, 21 percent in
finance/banking. Forty-four percent
of these graduates received some
sort of financial aid when attending
AGSIM.
Because of the "averaging,"
female graduates of AGSIM got lost
in the shuffle of figures. It is only
fair to point out that within the
past ten years, over 20 percent of
AGSIM graduates have been
women, and many of the class

group statistics
regarding position, family
size, and household income
would apply equally to them.
When asked about their attitudes
toward the American Graduate
School, 94 percent reported "some"
or "strong" feelings, and 75 percent
felt the School's reputation had improved
since graduation. Only 10
percent felt the reputation has
diminished; more recent graduates
tended to be more critical.
When asked if they had contributed
to the School, 42 percent responded
"yes," with 60 percent of
those saying they give on an
annual basis. Thus, about onefourth
of the respondees consider
themselves annual contributors to
AGSIM, although partiCipation
from all alumni in 1980-81 was
about 16 percent. This may be explained
by the innate bias in such a
survey, in that those responding
generally have positive attitudes toward
and want to help the School.
Seventy-seven percent stated
they plan to give in the future.
Only one class group (1957-61) indicated
that future gifts would be the
same or smaller. A grad echoed his
classmates' sentiments by stating,
"Your questionnaire does not cover
an important situation I facewhich
I'm sure is faced by many in
my age group. 1.) I currently have
a child attending an eastern university.

The service from the Alumni
Office was ranked as "good to excellent"

Thunderbird Magazine was read by

reviews, with several suggestions
for even more news about alumni.
Written comments particularly
showed the interest in and need for
more organized alumni activities,
with statements such as "more

"more parties ... ," ~
"planned activities ... ," ~
"local, regional fund
raising picnics, sporting
events, dinners," "de-velopment

Other requests ranged from "free
beer at the pub ... ," to an alumni
roster (names and addresses),
alumni recruiting committees, class
reunions, more personal contact
and communication, and more information
on the School's accomplishments
and expenditure of
money received . Many of these
suggestions are in the process of
being implemented: 25th class year
reunions, (see story, page 12) preliminary
steps to forming an alumni
association, and more planned
alumni activities.

Visiting
Professor
Disappears in
Mexico
Dr. Nicholas W. Schrock, visiting
professor from the University of
Colorado, has been missing in
Mexico since May 30, 1982. He had
returned in mid-May from Japan
and the People's Republic of China,
where he had been in conjunction
with AGSIM's exchange programs
at the Institute for International
Studies and Training and the
Beijing Institute for Foreign Trade.
On his way to a teaching post for
the summer semester at the
Autonomous University in
Guadalajara, Mexico, Schrock was
reported as overdue on June 4. The
Oficina de Poblacion de Nogales,
Sonora, confirms that he crossed
the border into Mexico on May 30
with permission to remain in the
country for 180 days. He has not
been heard from since.
Rumor, speculation, and
conjecture have been the order of
the day in response to the twisted
maze of events since his mysterious
disappearance. Charges of
corruption, ineptitude, and even
murder have been levied against
the civic officials of San Ignacio,
Sinaloa, a small town near
Mazatlan, where Dr. Schrock's
truck was found. Reports indicate
the town officials found the truck
on June 6 or 7 but failed to report
its discovery until August 2.
During this time period a young
man confessed to the murder of Dr.
Schrock, promising to produce the
body for officials. When officials
and Mrs. Schrock arrived to view
the body, there was none, and the
young man subsequently retracted
his confession. What had appeared
to be the resolution of the case had
itself given rise to more questions,
such as why the young man had
confessed in the first place.
The discovery of the truck in San
Ignacio gave rise to further theories
as an investigation led to the
charges of conspiracy, cover-up,
and homicide being levied against
the mayor, the chief of police, and
four deputies in San Ignacio. It was
reported that Dr. Schrock's truck
had been used from the time of its
discovery until the August 2 report
of the discovery for campaigning
purposes for the Mexican
presidential election.
Another confession emerged and
a body was exhumed from the local
cemetery. The body was identified
by local Mexican authorities to be
that of Professor Schrock. The body
was sent to Boulder, Colorado for
internment, but upon arrival it was
determined that the body was not
that of Schrock but that of an aged
Mexican man. The mayor of San
Ignacio, denied any involvement in
Schrock's disappearance. He
further said that "the
disappearance was strange" and he
hoped "nothing bad has happened
to Professor Schrock." Again,
apparent resolution led
investigators back to the starting
point.
With the discovery of the
misidentification, the case has been
reopened. Ambassador John Gavin,
U.S. envoy to Mexico, has lent the
full support of his staff to the
investigation. Ruth Schrock, when
asked about the possibility of
finding the truth concerning her
husband's disappearance replied, "I
am not hopeful."
There are still many theories
regarding Dr. Schrock's
disappearance. It is quite possible
that they may remain just
tha t -theories.
Presently, seven people have
been charged and are on trial in
Culiacan, Sinaloa. The San Ignacio
police chief has been charged with
homicide, two policemen as
accomplices to homicide and four
others as accessories in helping
cover up the crime.
At press time, no word regarding
the trial or any information
regarding Professor Schrock has
been forthcoming from either U.S.
or Mexican officials.

Trans-Europa Chapter Being
Considered
Carl Eidsness and Lo Locher
organized a meeting in Mainz, West
Germany, on the weekend of October 9
and 10 to further explore the idea of a
formal founding of a Trans-Europa
Thunderbird chapter. A tentative
agenda for the weekend included:
• a business meeting to determine if
and how to organize the chapter
• a tour of the c.A. Kupferberg
sparkling wine cellars
• a "Sekt" tasting
• a tour on a Rhine steamer along the
river's most picturesque stretch
• a walk through Mainz's "Alstadt"
with visits to its many wine pubs
Carl can be reached c/o A. Racke,
Kupferbergterrasse 17, 65 Mainz, West
Germany, or phoned at 49/61311105252.
He is anxious for suggestions and/or
offers to assist.
Hawaii . . . A lei greeting, pupus,
tropical drinks, and live Hawaiian
music and hula dancers highlighted the
recent gathering of Hawaii alumni in
honor of Dr. and Mrs. William Voris.
Thirty alumni and guests were on hand
to renew old acquaintances and make
new friends at the first major gettogether
in Hawaii in almost two years.
The event, held at the Honolulu
Club, was organized by June Pearson
Sweetser ('77), Dennis Oshiro ('72),
and Fred Smoot ('66) . During the
evening, T-Birds were treated to a
showing of the new slide presentation
on Thunderbird and were given an
update of the school's recent
accomplishments by Dr. Voris.
As the revellers partied into late
evening, they vowed to continue the
fun by getting together on a more
regular basis.

Cornucopia of Color
A cornucopia of color is coming
to AGSIM on November 6 and 7.
The Eighth Annual Thunderbird
Invitational Balloon Race will likely
have 100 balloons colOring the
morning air on the school's "back
forty" during the festive weekend.
Once again, student booths will
feature foods from around the
world with most of the operations
being sponsored by campus clubs.
However, entrepreneurship shines
through and many a student loan
payment has been assisted by
profits derived from hard work and
good vittles prepared by
"Thunderbirds in residence."
The Friends of Thunderbird in
conjunction with the Glendale
Chamber of Commerce began
planning and organizing the Eighth
Annual Race soon after last
November's event, which netted
over $30,000 for the school's
scholarship fund. Sponsorships for
the race are going for $325 and for
that fee the sponsor receives two
tickets to the highly praised Hot
Air Affair (international dinner,
silent auction and calcutta) held the
Friday evening before the first race
day. In addition, sponsors are
treated to a brunch, held two
weeks prior to the race, and a
half-page ad in the Balloon Race
program is included-and it's all
tax deductible.
This year the students have
organized a two-mile fun run on
Sunday, November 7 at 10 a.m. for
all the running enthusiasts who
will be attending. They would be
happy to have some alums join
their ranks.
We hope T-Birds will come to
consider the Balloon Race as
AGSIM's "homecoming" event and
plan a visit to campus. The Alumni
Office will be open with coffee and
doughnuts available both Saturday
and Sunday mornings, with
stronger refreshment available on
Saturday afternoon.
Nearly 75 alums visited the office
during the 1981 race, and we hope
to see more of you this year!
'57 Class Silver Reunion
Set for Decelllber 16-17
Plans for the Silver Anniversary
Reunion for the class of 1957 are
underway and we're hoping for a
large crowd.
The schedule of events includes
an informal reception on Thursday
evening, December 16, in the
Goldwater Lounge. Faculty and
staff will join you, old acquaintances
can be renewed and past
good times remembered, and you
can catch up on news about the
growth and development of
AGSIM.
On Friday, December 17, after a
morning gathering in the alumni
office, tours of campus are available
for those interested. Then there is
the pre-commencement luncheon
with the board of trustees at the
President's residence. Also
attending the luncheon will be the
commencement speaker, Dr.
Thomas Horton, president and
chief execu tive officer of American
Management Associations.
At the commencement exercises,
held in the late afternoon in the
Central Quad (just like 1957), each
alum will be presented their Silver
Anniversary Graduation Certificate.
Of course, following graduation
there is the party, organized by the
graduating class, at a local resort.
Everyone is encouraged to attend
and information regarding tickets
will be available when you arrive
on campus. Personal preference
remains the determining factor with
regard to attendance.
The '56 Reunion drew 12
attendees and we're hopeful that
the class of 1957 can double that
figure. Please phone Cathy Benoit,
(602) 978-7135, for more
information and assistance with
local accommodations and
reservations. MARK YOUR
CALENDARS NOW - and plan to
attend YOUR 25th Silver Reunion.

HONOR ROLL OF DONORS 1981-82
Alumni giving reached
a record high of
$119,137 in 1981-82, an
increase of 29 percent.
Alumni also generated
an additional $38,824
of $47,135 in corpora te
matching gifts, for a
total of $157,961 given
to the School. Kenneth
A. Jacuzzi, International
Thunderbird Fund
Chairman for 1981-82,
matched new and increased
dollars with a
generous challenge
grant. The average gift
increased from $50 in
1980-81 to $65 in 1981-
82.
The number of donors
remained at the same
level as the previous
year. Only fifty-five
percent of donors in
1980-81 responded
with a gift in 1981-82.
Yet over 800 first-time
donors did respond.
Those alumni giving in
consecutive years will
become members of
the Encore Club, deSignated

Roll by the symbol

AGSIM's
New
Activities
Center
by S. Russell Dworkin
Slowly, but surely, the campus of
AGSIM has undergone many
transformations in the past 35
years. The renovation of old
buildings and the construction of
new ones has served to partly
diminish the military camp
atmosphere and bring forth an
appearance more commonly
associated with an academic
institution. Indeed, former
denizons of campus dormitories
must bear fond memories as the
recent renovation of 0 building
brought the last barracks-style
dorm into the modern era with
new fixtures, carpeting, and most
belovedly-air conditioning. A new
classroom building gave students a
more academic setting and teachers
a more professional arena for
teaching. The old classrooms
received fresh paint and new
doors. The career center was
enlarged to make room for more
in terview space and other
recruiting facilities. Only one
development was absent-a
centralized, multi-functional
gathering place. This summer, the
old familiar hangar which housed
the Thunderbird "jets" in the' 40s,
and the Pub subsequently, has
been undergoing renovation to fill
that need.
By November, AGSIM will have
a new activities center, spacious
enough to accommodate between
1,200 and 1,500 people, replete
with bar, kitchen facilities, and
wired for sound. It will serve the
AGSIM community for such
purposes as meetings, seminars,
dinners, movies, and parties.
According to Lee Stickland, vice
president for business affairs, its
doors will be open for the first time
to service the 8th Annual Hot Air
Affair on November 5.
The idea for the center first came
up two years ago at the Balloon
Race of 1980, when Dr. Voris
remarked publicly that that type of
facility was needed. The idea
germinated until this summer when
recent operating surpluses
generated the funds for the project,
which will cost approximately
$300,000.
Stickland outlined some of the
features of the renovation such as a
drop-down divider to partition the
space for smaller gatherings, an
evaporative cooling system which
has the flexibility to later be
converted to centralized cooling
and heating at low cost, auditorium
style front doors, and modern
restroom facilities . He also
discussed some of the cost-saving
features of the auditorium such as
the leveling of the floor to reduce
clean up costs, no permanent
seating fixtures to reduce set-up
costs, storage space for chairs
which will save on chair rental
costs, and the fact that the kitchen
facilities will save steps for the
caterers, which will be the dining
hall in most cases. Stickland also
added that because the new center
can accommodate more people than
any other building in Glendale, the
center possibly will generate
revenue from rental.
I can hear the question, "What
about the Pub?" The Pub will
remain in its present location but it,
too, will be renovated. The
renovation is scheduled for the
latter part of 1982, so as not to
conflict with current use, and will
be funded completely by revenue
generated from operations. It is a
little known fact but the Pub has
been self-sustaining since its first
period of operation when it was
given $1,200 by the ASLC in 1971.
The $75,000 renovation will double
the size of the facility, replace the
ceiling, modernize the locker-style
restrooms, and improve the interior
decor. It will still serve the finest
selection of imported beer in the
desert.
The face of AGSIM it is a
changin'! Those of you who have
been a few years away from the
school will be surprised on your
next visit out, which we welcome
heartily. Come on by, have a drink
in the new Pub, see the
transformations and feel the pulse
of the school. Though the face has
changed, AGSIM still does what it
always did best-train students to
be international business people.
The new structures merely enhance
the effort.
