Thunderbird Women Meet
EDITOR'S NOTE
In its 38 year history, Thunderbird
has had close to 3,000 women participate
in its program. In fact, nine women were
enrolled in the first year of the School's
operation. Today, women make up
approximately 30 percent of the
1,OOO-member student body. Clearly,
women are an important part of
Thunderbird's past and present.
Thunderbird Magazine contacted
almost 300 Tbird alumnae living abroad
to learn about their international pursuits
and how gender and education factored
into where they are today. The responses
were fascinating and insightful. They
are, as a group, bright, articulate,
determined women who have charted
unconventional and sometimes unex­pected
courses for their lives.
Of the 27 alumnae who responded to
the our questionnaire, all but three are
living outside of their native country.
They are primarily in management and
marketing positions, posted everywhere
from the Middle East to Europe and
Asia. As different as their specific
circumstances and professions are, their
experiences and their advice to women
are remarkably similar. They are, for the
most part, challenged and happy with
life overseas, but point out that it is not
necessarily an easy choice.
The Professional Woman
When asked how the host culture
views them in comparison to local
women, most of the responding Tbird
alumnae describe themselves and their
professional positions as outside of the
cultural norms. Georgia Barron-Mees
'77, a management consultant in West
Germany, says in that country, "most
women are considered in their proper
place in society if they are either
housewives/mothers or in non­managerial
positions~' Her assessment
is echoed by other respondents in
places like Austria,Japan, Norway and
Scotland.
Karen Bennan '81, a public relations
and marketing executive in London,
says, "There is a noticeable lack of

Katie Mackie '74, a director of
marketing and new business development
for Pillsbury in Venezuela, finds an
interesting contradiction. "Venezuela is
considerably different than most Latin
American countries. It is very American­ized
and tends to treat women
professionals as professionals. An
interesting pOint, however, is that women
professionals definitely play two roles.
You are, by and large, a professional in
the office, but when you leave the office,
the more traditional roles are assumed:'
Mary Lee Adams '82, relationship
manager for multinational companies
at Citibank in Santo Domingo, has
another perspective on the Latin culture
and its treatment of women. Although
Dominicans are quite Latin in their
attitudes toward women, Adams says
she rarely feels limited. "I have learned
a lot by working with women who are
very professional without conforming
to many of the stereotypes that American
women think are so important in terms
of managerial styles-physical appearance
and suppression of family and personal
lives:'
Special Status
Given those cultural attitudes, are
these Tbird alumnae treated differently
than host country nationals? The answer
for the most part is a resounding "yes~'
Most fmd that being a foreigner gives
them a special status that preempts the
place reserved for women. Adams says
that in the Dominican Republic many of
the attitudes are Simply not applied.
"Th ere is a consciousness of the fact
that I am different because I come from
a different culture~'
Many agree with Lori Mills Foster
'74, vice preSident, management
supervisor for]. Walter Thompson in
Mexico City, that the status of "different"
is applied because, as professional
women, they Simply do not fit the
culture's preconceived notions of what
a woman should be. "Being classified as

different has its pros and cons:' she
says. "On the negative side, being
different tends to alienate you from the
others and that can be somewhat lonely.
On the positive side, however, being
different can also mean unusually
good~'
Being different in Japan is a definite
plus, according to Charlotte-Kennedy
Takahashi '76, founder and president
of a consulting firm in Tokyo, and
Linda Ketchum '80, a supervisor with
Kenda Institute of Language. Western
women have much more opportunity in
Japan than host nationals says Kennedy­Takahashi.
Ketchum adds that, generally
speaking, the "Japanese people give a
lot of freedom to foreigners" and that
works to the express advantage of
working women from the West.
On the whole then, being classified as
"different" seems to be an advantage.
"Foreign women are not so qUickly
stereotyped as host national women:'
says Ann MacArthur '81, who handles
recruiting and staff relations for Citicorp
in Tokyo. It also means that their
nontraditional behavior is more readily
tolerated. As Babs Potvin Ryan '81, the
UK. marketing manager for Kawasaki
Motors puts it, "British men are more
accepting of my aggressiveness than
they would be with British women~'
On the other hand, Patricia Murtha
'82, account manager for Dentsu-Young
& Rubicam, has found in Singapore that
she has to prove herself more because
she is an American woman. Others like
Mariya Toohey '78, with Ford of
Europe, find that their host colleagues
seem threatened by their presence. In
Toohey's case, all of her colleagues are
German men. She is fluent in German,
but her company's business is conducted
entirely in English where she has a
distinct advantage over her German
colleagues.
Gaining Acceptance
Ultimately, however, most of the
alumnae responding agree that their
gender has neither hindered nor helped
their careers. As Kit Macy '81, project
officer for the UN. Food and Agriculture
Organization in Chad, sees it, her
effectiveness plays a greater role in how
she is viewed than the fact she is a
woman. For Concetta Spizzirri Smarius

'83, an export credit manager in the
Netherlands, what it comes down to is a
process of acceptance. According to
Smarius, because "women are not
commonly found in European manage­ment,
when one comes along it is a
raritY' Of the fifty people who applied
for her current position, she was the
only woman. Says Smarius, "Gaining
acceptance is the keY.'
During this process of acceptance,
women face some unusual and, at
times, comical complications. Elaine
Wason Christiansen '77 a stockbroker
in Norway, is amused by well-meaning
but patronizing clients. An American
citizen, she often has clients and
customers tell her how well she speaks
English! Mary Hewitt Dudley '79 was
surprised and bemused by the double
standard she found in Scotland. When
she went to open an account with a
local bank, the bank officer would not
accept her check until he met her
husband. Dudley is an applications and
systems consultant with a computer
firm in Aberdeen. She says, "I never
considered myself a feminist in the US.
(I never felt the need), but I believe I am
one now.
Theresa Marcroft '83, a strategic
marketing manager for a high-technology
business in Europe, finds herself a true
rarity. At an industry conference 220
men and 2 women were in attendance
and at check-in, the conference
coordinator asked if she would be
participating in the wives program.
Marie De Lattre '82, a research fellow
in The Netherlands, remembers her
acceptance process more like an initiation
The first time she met with the director
of the agricultural research institute of a
country in East Africa, he gave his
answers to her male colleague and
referred to Lattre as "he". She reports,
however, that after a period of time he
came to accept her both as a woman
and as a professional.
As a career woman in Japan, Sumiko
Katsuhara '80, a marketing representa­tive
with Irving Trust in Tokyo, calls
herself"a rare species~' She reports that
people often assume her male subordi­nate
is her boss, in spite of the fact that
Katsuhara appears older and more
experienced.

she is treated with more respect and that she
has more credibility than native women.
~ Rauni Laukkanen '82, is living in her native
country of Finland and working for eitibank.
She finds that working for an American bank
means she has a higher salary and better
benefits than with local companies.

Dual Careers
Perhaps one of the most difficult
complications that some of these women
face in their pursuit of an international
career is the pressure of a dual career
marriage. Difficult at best in the United
States, such an arrangement overseas
can be next to impossible. Karen
Berman met this problem head on in
1982 when her husband was offered a
position in Geneva. After receiving a job
offer from an organization in Geneva,
she agreed to leave her job in the U.S.
After relocating to Switzerland and
waiting several months, it became clear
that Berman would not be granted a
Swiss work permit. By that time,
however, her husband did not want to
give up his position.
Says Berman, "The difficulties arising
from two people trying to live together
(at least in the same country) while both
pursue international careers are nearly
insurmountable and require a great
deal of sacrifice from both parties:'
Arlette Miller '70, superintendent of
policy development and compensation
for the Bahrain Petroleum Company,
knows those difficulties well. "! have no
special prescription other than to be
diplomatic:' she says. While each may
have to make sacrifices, she cautions,
"Don't expect your or your husband's
company to be overjoyed with a dual
career marriage, and don't be surprised
when other expatriate wives feel
threatened by you:'
Miller and others faced with these
conflicts would agree with Mary Hewitt
Dudley that it is time for international
companies to recognize that a trade-off
between dual career couples has to be
made when one partner is offered an
overseas position. A few companies
have started to at least make an effort to
assist the spouse in finding employment,
but such efforts are defmitely the
exception to the rwe.
The Keys To Success
In the final analysis, living and
working overseas may not be easy, but
at least for the Tbird alumnae who
responded to our questionnaire, it is
rewarding and worth the effort. Most
agree that the key to their success is

American woman can be a big plus in that it
allows me to be different from Mexican
women. It gives me pennission to be aggressive!'
Shirin McElhinney '77, Irish by birth, is a
marketing advisor in London. In her work she
has led and organized a number of trade
missions where she was the only female. Says
McElhinney, "I have learned to walk a thin
line between being professional, feminine and
yet able to relax with the 'lads' ... but then, the
Irish always combine business and pleasure!'
that their abilities and effectiveness
have overshadowed the significance of
their gender. For most, their profeSSional
achievements are more important than
the social strides they may make as
women.
For Babs Ryan, the prescription for
success is clear and straight-forward:
"Forget you're a woman. Focus on your
strengths, not your differences. Call
attention to your market share, your
profits, your accomplishments and no.t
to the fact you are a woman:'
When asked about Thunderbird and
how it affected or enhanced their
international careers, a majority reported
that along with the core business
classes, the cross-cultural cOrllmuni­cations
and area studies courses have
been vital to their success abroad. The
classes gave them an edge not only in
their work but in their social adjustment
as well. Others agreed with Karen
Strube '81, an international investment
conswtant in The Netherlands, who
found that the international environment
at Thunderbird was the greatest factor
in her decision to pursue a career
overseas.
What these women tell us in their
words, and more importantly in their
professional accomplishments, is that
Thunderbird's tripartite program along
with its international student body is a
unique and invaluable preparation for a
career in the international arena.

How did you find out about
Thunderbird?
Chances are it was through a personal
contact, probably an alumnus, and it
wasn't by coincidence. Thunderbird's
unique way of student recruiting is
done by a worldwide network of alumni
called Alumni Educational Counselors
(AECs). Their main concern is promoting
Thunderbird to future students through
placement offices, professional contacts,
and social engagements.
"The bottom line is that alumni can
be our best representatives. They are
the product and can best discuss the
results of the school:' says Julia Harvey,
Director of College Relations.
The AEC program, which took shape
in the early 1970s, has grown steadily
and now includes approximately 650
alumni. The program is handled through
the admissions office, and although its
budget is limited, alumni can be
reimbursed for minor expenses such as
mileage, parking tolls and business
luncheons. Each alum is armed with
individual experiences and fond
memories ofthe time spent at
Thunderbird. Although the AECs have
no "official" ties with the School, the
personal touch they give to each future
applicant can have a dramatic effect on

the outcome of their recruiting efforts.
Of these 650 alumni counselors, five
individuals take the forefront in the
number of students they have interviewed
and campuses they have visited. These
alumni have been the backbone of the
AEC recruiting program and continue
to volunteer many hours to counsel
students. Without their continued
support, the AEC program would not be
as successful as it is today. The
Thunderbird Magazine asked these
individuals why they are AECs, what
qualities they think an AEC should
possess, and what kinds of interviewing
situations they have encountered. listed
below is a brief proflle on these special
individuals.
Timothy Walker '68, together with
Bill Devir '74, another AEC, covered
campuses in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky
anq West Virginia. For the past six years
Tim has been an AEC in Colorado and
more recently has interviewed a total of
336 students and made 27 campus
visits. Currently he is vice preSident of
two subsidiaries of Quaker State Oil
Refining Corporation.
William Devir '74, has been an AEC
for ten years and has concentrated his
recruiting efforts in Ohio. Bill has
interviewed 296 students and made 39
campus visits. Currently Market Manager
for the International Division of Monarch,
he has worked in international business
since his graduation from Thunderbird.
Joseph Gury '68, has concentrated
his recruiting efforts for the past 20
years on the University of Colorado,
Boulder campus. He has interviewed
226 students and made 18 campus
visits. Joe has worked in international
business and is currently a self-employed
business consultant.
Charles Ancona '64, has been
volunteering his time to the AEC
program for the past 20 years and has
interviewed 203 students and made 34
campus visits. Charles has concentrated
his efforts on all the colleges in Virginia.
Currently he is Assistant to the President
for Boars Head Enterprises.
William Ferry '51, has been recruiting
for 20 years primarily on the campuses
in Tennessee. Bill has interviewed 128
students and has made 20 campus
visits. Currently he is the General
Insurance Agent to the American Family
Lue Insurance company.
Spreading The News
The total number of students these
five individuals have interviewed over
an average of 15 years is 1,189, and the
number of campus visits they have
made is 138. In comparison, an average
AEC will be a volunteer for five years
and may visit two campuses a year.
Obviously, these five alumni have made
a substantial contribution to Thunder­bird.
So, why do they take the time out
of their busy schedules to counsel and
inform prospective students on
Thunderbird?
"I have always considered it a privilege

and an honor to represent the School in
any way I can. When asked to participate
in the program some twenty years ago,
it was the least I could do in repaying
the School for one of the most rewarding
years of my life:' said Ferry.
The self-reward each receives varies
from helping a student identify their
career opportunities, to keeping in
contact with the current attitudes of
graduate students, to giving assistance
to a candidate who could make a good
contribution to Thunderbird. But
whatever the reason, these five
individuals continue to "spread the
word" about Thunderbird and what it
has to offer.
What It Takes
It was unanimous. Enthusiasm was
the key word used to describe the
qualities an alum should possess before
becoming an AEC. Rapport with young
people, genuine interest in prospective
students' questions, being in touch with
what is happening on campus and
honesty are also major qualifications.
"I would most definitely recommend
that other alumni serve as AECs.
However, I would underline the fact that
they need an above average level of

enthusiasm so they enjoy what they are
doing and the prospective candidates
receive the encouragement which is so
needed:' said Ancona.
Both Harvey and Walker agreed that
by possessing the "total experience" of
having attended Thunderbird and getting
meaningful work experience, AECs can
"give candidates an idea of how
Thunderbird helped them achieve their
goals~' Walker added that he strongly
recommended alumni to participate in
the AEC program and see "first-hand,
Thunderbird continually progress as
the premier source of international
managers~'
The Art
Of Interviewing
A typical interviewing day for an AEC
would consist of meeting with students
and answering questions such as cost of
attending and financial aid, admission
qualifications, job opportunities after
graduation or the School's academic
standing. All five AECs mentioned that
the quality of students has improved
through the years. "They are definitely
an above-average group:' added Ancona.

requested that he speak to her class.
Humor aside, Gury mentioned a few
points he tries to discuss with every
student he interviews. "I try to get the
student to think about their future and
what they want to do once they
graduate. I suggest that they visit the
campus, talk to the students and
teachers, and find out who is buying
the final product. I think this is
important because, how many oppor­tunities
do you get to go to graduate
school?"
Obviously, these alumni have made a
substantial contribution to Thunderbird
by dedicating hours of their time to the
AEC program. liThe AEC program is the
lifeblood of our recruiting efforts;' adds
Harvey. It is hoped that all 650 AECs
will continue to encourage and support
all prospective students and to keep the
program as successful as the records
indicate.

New Director of
Alumni Relations
Ms. Bobbie M. Boyd has been appointed
to the position of Director of Alumni
Relations. She replaces Wayne M. Pulver
'70/'78 who resigned in May:
Ms. Boyd will assist in the development
of the Thunderbird Alumni Association,
oversee the activities of the School's
18,000 alumni, help establish alumni
chapters and maintain current chapter
relations.
For the past two and a half years,
Ms. Boyd was the Coordinator of
Development Services at Thunderbird.
Previously, she was fund raising
coordinator for the Southern Arizona
Division of the American Heart
Association in Tucson, Arizona. Ms.
Boyd holds a Bachelor of Business
Administration degree from Southern
Methodist University.
Bobbie M. Boyd
Contributions
Total contributions to Thunderbird for
1984-85 exceeded the one million
dollar mark on May 15. Alumni donations
accounted for $167,420, which showed
an increase of $4,869 over last year.
Bizarre Bazaar
The spring Bizarre Bazaar earned a
record $2,200 for the Financial Aids
Emergency Loan Fund. The grand prize
of a four-day vacation for two at Club
Med in Guaymas, Mexico was won by
Morris Barkan '72 of Tucson.

United Nations
Diplomat
The Honorable Mizuo Kuroda,
Ambassador ofJapan to the United
Nations, spoke at Thunderbird June 5,
on the position of the United Nations in
today's international framework and
Japan's role within the United Nations.
International Auction
It's time again to start collecting items
for the 11 th Annual International
Auction to benefit the Friends of
Thunderbird Scholarship Fund. The
event will take place November 15,
1985. Last year's auction raised $15,000
for scholarships primarily given to third
semester students whose funds will not
last until graduation.
Some of the more unusual gifts from
last year, according to Mavis Voris,
auction chairperson, were live lobsters
from the New England chapter ofT'bird
alums, a stuffed piranha from Oscar
Cerallo '70, and a six-karat green
tourmaline from Mac Messinger '72.
"Many guests at last year's auction said
that their wedding and Christmas
shopping was accomplished in one
evening;' said Mrs. Voris.

Donald Easum, former ambassador to
Nigeria and now President of the
African American Institute in New York,
spoke April 22 on African affairs and
US. involvement on the continent.
Dr. Juan Diez-Canedo, head of the
Economic Research and Financial
Planning Office of the Mexico Central
Bank and Robert Pastorino, Economic
Officer of the US. Embassy in Mexico
City, visited campus April 22 to speak
on current economic conditions in
Mexico. Their visit was part of the
Conference on Mexican Economic
Outlook sponsored by Thunderbird
and ASU Center for Latin American
Studies and College of Business.
Brazilian Films
A Brazilian Film Festival was held June
17-19 on the Thunderbird Campus.
The films shown were: "They Don't
Wear Black Ties;' "Bye, Bye Brazil;' and
"Xica:' The International Studies
Department of Thunderbird sponsored
the event.

The Mystique Remains
like alumni of any bona fide institution,
T'birds have their own jargon. At the
top of everybody's list is the ''Thunderbird
Mystique:' but most of us don't appreciate
its meaning until we experience it ftrst
hand.
After graduation in May; I decided to
travel to Asia to visit friends and check
on job opportunities. After some
sightseeing in Japan, I arrived in
Singapore, resume in hand, and arranged
to pick up an updated alumni list from
Jim Echle, the Thunderbird liaison in
Singapore.
The generosity of the alums was
overwhelming. Some took me to dinner
or met me for a drink. Others allowed
me to use their offices to make phone
calls. All were genUinely interested and
freely offered their advice. These were
the people whose only initial connection
with me was our common Thunderbird
heritage.
The response was the same in Kuala
Lumpur, Hong Kong, and Taipei. All of
the alums are too numerous to mention
by name, but let me just say thanks
again to all for their help and advice.
I'm happy to say I was successful in
my Asian job search. I've accepted a
position with Business International in
Singapore. Any present or future T'birds

Dr. Duane Hall, Department of World
Business, had his third book published.
Multinational Distribution: Channel
Tax and Legal Strategies was co-authored
with Mr. Ralph Gilbert, Partner, law firm
of Baker and McKenzie, of Chicago.
Gifts
Nabisco Brands, Inc. pledged $15,000
over a three-year period to Thunderbird.
The Honorable William C. Thmer of
the Nabisco Board of Directors and also
a Trustee on the Thunderbird Board
was instrumental in obtaining the
pledge.

Professor Dennis Guthery, known by the
students as the "King of Marketing Research,"
was elected the outstanding professor in the
World Business Department.
Consular Ball
The third annual Consular Ball was
held April 27 at the Phoenix Country
Club. Proceeds from the black tie event
go into an endowment to provide
scholarships for Thunderbird students.
As a result of this year's event, the
Consular Corps of Arizona added
$7,500 to the endowment.
Summer Enrollment
Figures
Total enrollment for summer term,
1985 reached a record 891 students:
360 ~e ftrst semester students, 301 are
second semester students, 145 are in
their third semester, and 85 are fourth
semester students. The total includes 44
students in Guadalajara and 8 in
Beijing. There are 232 foreign students
enrolled from 58 countries.
Thunderbird
Environment Improves
Many improvements have been made
on the Thunderbird campus and more
are planned. The Thunderbird Activity
Center, which students of the 60s
remember as a parking garage, has
been remodeled with new entrances,
lower ceilings and recovered walls into a
functional building for commencement
exercises and special events. Landscaping
around the TAC, completed this spring,
improved the outside appearance as
well. The storage hangar was also
remodeled and repainted to improve
student storage facilities. Plans are
underway for extra storage. Parking lots
too, are being upgraded, with new
surfaces and spaces added.
UOne of our main concerns is the
student dormitories:' says Robert Watts,
Director of the Physical Plant. "We paint'
dorm rooms and clean drapes yearly.
We're planning a major renovation for
the East Apartments, and some of the
West Apartments are going to be .
changed from married student housmg
to single rooms:' . .
The faculty building is also recelvmg
a face lift. New paint and carpets will
grace the offices. The dining hall is
receiving all new equipment and a new
stainless steel serving line, updating the
wooden one now in use. "The students
here are great and it's nice to be able to
do things to improve the campus for
them:' Watts says.

Business, traveled to London in April to
speak to the International Real Estate
Institute on "Risk Management in Real
Estate;' and in May he spoke on
"International Insurance" to The Society

Carl Frear, Goodyear Professor of
Industrial Marketing, presented two
papers on May 14 and 15, at the
Institute of Business Marketing,
Pennsylvania State University: "Product
Importance as a Determinant of Buyer

Dr. Jorge Valdivieso, Professor of
Spanish, participated in the Congress
on East-~est.Cultures at the University
of Hawau. HIS paper was titled,

International Advisory Board of the
Kahlil Gibran Centennial Foundation.
The foundation was authorized by the
U.S. Congress to establish a Gibran
memorial in or around Washington,

Carol Hazelett, Director of Career
Services, attended the AMA Resources
Conference in New Orleans and the
Midwest College Placement Association
meeting in Chicago in April. She and

Seoul, Korea. Professor Sours chaired a

in Seoul, addressed over thirty T'bird
alumni at a special gathering. He was

the East Asia Council on International

Dr. William Voris, school preSident,

Five student teams participated in the

Journals Published
The first issue of The International
Executive, a review and reference journal,
was published in April. The journal
which was recently purchased from its
originator, Dr. John Fayerweather, will
be published three times a year. It
carries reviews of current articles and
books on international business as well
as an extensive annotated bibliography
of recent articles, books and current
government reports. More than 200
periodicals are regularly reviewed for
pertinent articles. Subscriptions are $30

Anatosha Manuel has accepted the

bachelor's degree in political science

Dr. Schrock's
Body Found
The body of Dr. Nicholas Schrock was
returned to the United States on April
30 and identified by his wife Ruth. Dr.
Schrock, former Thunderbird faculty
member, disappeared in May, 1982,
while en route to a teaching aSSignment
for the University of Colorado at the
Autonomous University of Guadalajara.

The Phoenix Chapter's Thunderbird
"Cowboy" Dinner, held at the Rustlers Rooste

The Phoenix East Valley get-together

relocated to the Hungry Tiger Seafood
Restaurant. Reasons for the change of atmo­sphere
included location, low cost drinks
and great hors d'oeuvres.
Chicago
New officers elected for the Chicago area

Each year a booth is set up to provide
information about Thunderbird to potential
students and recruiters. The Chicago Tbirds,
along with their guests, also dined on Greek
cuisine at Deni's Den April 25.
Costa Rica
The Costa Rica Thunderbird alumni held
their annual barbecue picnic on April 13.
The gathering took place at the Escazu
home of Doug Bartlett '70 and his wife,
Caroline. Once again, Mike Santellanes '60
was in charge of the barbecue.
Finland
Frank Smith '78, Arizona's Honorary
consul to Finland, organized the first official
alumni meeting in Finland April 30 at the
Mikado Restaurant in Helsinki. In attendance
were Ilkka Nummila '83, Iwona Kervinen '81,
and Rauni Laukkanen '82.

Thirty-five New England Tbirds attended
a performance of the Boston Pops on May 2,
and the group was recognized in the printed
program. They enjoyed drinks and jazz
afterward at the Colonnades Lounge.
Upcoming events include a whitewater
rafting trip, August 17-19, on the Kennebec
River, a Cultural Dinner, and an "Ab-Shucks
Clam Bake" scheduled for a weekend in

Saudi Arabia
Several Tbirds attended the United Palestine
Appeal (UPA) fundraising dinner in Riyadh
in November, 1984. ln attendance were Cliff

UPAdinner.
Tennessee
Tennessee Tbirds held a backyard barbecue
onJuly 20 at the home of Bill and Nancy
Ferry' 51 . This extremely casual B & B
(barbecue and beer) party was topped off

Tubing the Guadalupe River in Texas,
co-sponsored by the Dallas and Houston
Chapters, kicked off the first annual AlI­Texas
T'bird Round-Up. The June 29 round-up
finished in true Texas tradition with a
country western dance at the New Braunfels
Holiday Inn. New officers elected for the
Houston area are: Mike Gable '81, PreSident;
Molly Wright '80, Vice President; Lee Girard
'78, Treasurer; and Melinda Sawberger '84,
Secretary. Houston Tbirds are actively
searching for the 1985 Honorary Thunderbird
Alumni Award recipient. The award is given
to an exemplary Houston business person,
who has done the most for International
business, and is not a Thunderbird. The
Most Outstanding Thunderbird Award will
be presented to the most deserving Houston
Tbird in the chapter. Future Houston events
to look forward to are the Ethnic Restaurant
Program and the Downtown Thunderbird
Executive (Breakfast) Club.

Thirteen alumni in Thailand gathered at
the home of Garry Moore '64 in Bangkok.

and 43 countries. Speaking to the May graduating class of
Thunderbirds, Ambassador Kirkpatrick urged
graduates to be prejudiced in favor of free­dom.

On May 17, 18 and 19, 125 Tbirds, friends
and spouses gathered to celebrate the
Seventh Annual Thunderbird Alumni
Association of Europe Get-Together in Bad
Ischl, Austria. Eleven countries were
represented. The group increased in size
from 27 Tbirds three years ago to over 70
this year.
Entertainment included a Tbird target
shooting contest, a fun run through Bad
Ischl, and an excursion through the
mountainsides ofSalzkammergut. Plenty of
good food and drink was on hand as well.
At the business meeting, guest speaker
Peter Capek discussed time management,
and members finalized many ideas
concerning the Thunderbird Alumni
Association of Europe. A board, representing
a cross-section of Europe, was also chosen. It
includes Nils Ellingsen '81 (Norway), Bill
Schlichter '75 (Germany), Susan Duval '77
(France), Betsy Nelson '78 (The Netherlands),
Eric Herkens '79 (Belgium), John Cook '79
The Seventh Reunion of the Thunderbird
Alumni Association of Europe was held in
historic Bad IscW, meeting place for prominent
people for over 150 years.
(Belgium), Charles lafond '80 (Austria), and
Markus Habsburg '81 (Austria).The TAAE is
now officially registered in Brussels, Belgium,
and will be located in the International
Association Center in Brussels. A scholarship
fund was also established and already has a
balance of over $1,700.
"Everyone was sad to see the party end,"
said Charles laFond '80, "but it also brought
joy to hear of the plans for the next reunion.
