Thelma
Kieckhefer
Honored
The American Graduate School of
International Management ("Thunderbird"),
Glendale, honored Dr. Thelma
H. Kieckhefer's support of the Dom
Pedro II Chair during ceremonies at the
School's August commencement
exercises.
Dr. Kieckhefer, a long-time Phoenix
philanthropist, has provided the operating
costs for the Dom Pedro II Chair in
Luso-Brazilian and Hispanic American
Studies since 1971. Professor J oaquim
M. Duarte, Jr., Chairman of the
Department ofInternational Studies,
has held the Chair since its inception.
As the School's largest single donor,
Dr. Kieckhefer has contributed over a
million and a half dollars to Thunderbird
and has served on its Board of
Trustees since 1970. Her gifts have
included the John H. Kieckhefer Residence
Hall, the Kieckhefer wing of the
Frank 1. Snell Learning Center, and the
newly remodeled Kieckhefer International
Studies Center. In 1981, Mrs.
Kieckhefer was awarded an honorary
degree of Doctor of Humane Letters
from Thunderbird.
The Dom Pedro II Chair, which Dr.
Kieckhefer has supported for nearly 14
years, has permitted Thunderbird to
develop and maintain its important
commitment to cultural and area
courses and research on Iberia, Latin
America, and Lusohispanophone Africa.
The Chair was named after the Emperor
Dom Pedro II, who gUided Brazil's
destinies from 1840 to 1889 and helped
consolidate and preserve that nation.
In addition to supporting the faculty
member's salary, research activities,
profeSSional travel and the acquisition
of course background materials, Dom
Pedro II Chair funding has contributed
to the entire International Studies
Department.
More recently, Dom Pedro II funds are
being used to computerize accessibility
to the research collection on Portugal,
Brazil, and Lusophone Africa. The Chair

Language Department Means
The accent is on "modern" in
Thunderbird's Department of Modern
Languages. With more rigorous degree
requirements, a large research grant,
expanded testing procedures, new
courses, advanced videotape equipment,
and strong faculty publications, the
department is sending a strong signal
that it means business -- and business is
really what the changes are all about.
In all eight languages, the focus is on
preparing students for the business
world. As ofthis fall, graduates must be
proficient not only in general vocabulary
of their chosen languages, but also
in business vocabulary.
The change means even more preliminary
testing than usual. During two
and a half exhaustive days, faculty
members test all new students who
have lived abroad for any length of time
or have studied a foreign language. The
decision of whether they belong in a
beginning, intermediate, or advanced
class, or can waive all requirements
entirely, hangs on these tests.
"In other universities, students would
be put into a class on the strength of
transcripts," says Dr. Lilith Schutte,
chair of the Department of Modern
Languages, "but we don't accept any
other evidence of their proficiency. It
might have been some time ago that the
person took the classes," she points out.
"Usually, after traditional college
classes·, a student will know the grammar,
but can't speak well. It happens
quite often that students have three or
four years of the language and still are
placed in the intermediate level for the
lack of speaking ability," Dr. Schutte
adds.
If they pass the 20-rninute oral test,
and if they pass a written test in general
language, they must then pass a test on
business vocabulary. Terms like
"merger", "securities", "pay scales",
"debit", or "liabilities" might be
included. But Dr. Schutte warns that the
test is always changing and new terms
are incorporated to make sure the
student will be able to function in the
modern business world.
2
IIForeign language fluency is
important, if not essential,
when a u.s. business invests
in other countries, when it
exports to world markets, and
when u.s. personnel are
employed by foreign-owned
firms:'

All of the tests are custom-made for
Thunderbird. "Unlike the standardized
tests," Dr. Schutte points out, "the
Thunderbird test involves reading an
assigned piece, such as a newspaper
article and then writing about it'
A student who shows proficiency in
general language, but fails the business
vocabulary test must take an advanced
language course such as "Advanced
Business Language", "Commercial
Correspondence", or a course with
cultural orientation, such as "Contemporary
SOCial, Political, Sociocultural
and Economic Problems~'
High-tech Teaching
Newest item on the language scene is
a tristandard videotape player, which
can play Videotapes from other countries
as well as American tapes.
The new equipment will enable the
department to use business training
tapes, television ads, and fUms from all
over the world, says Andre Klein,
Associate Professor of French. Professor
Klein and Elza White, Associate Professor
of French, have spearheaded the
program to bring videotapes to the
campus.
"The problem", explains Klein, "is
that different countries use different
video systems, so one cannot use
French tapes or German tapes on an
American system. Three different
systems are currently in use around the
world," he says, "so we needed a player
that would accommodate tapes in
each~'
The new equipment consists of both
monitor and video-recorder. Classes
can now see authentic tapes produced
overseas. Use oftelevision programs
and business tapes in the classroom will
increase as the department acquires
more of these materials.
"The only problem," says Klein, "is
that we need more of this kind of
equipment. Right now, we have only
one machine located in a room where
classes can come to use it, but the
students would like to be able to play
the tapes independently, and the current
equipment in the library accommodates
only American tapes. When we
get the funds, we hope to add some
tristandard equipment there as weI!:'
"Now what we need are more tapes,"
says Klein, "and this is where our
alumni can help. We need tapes from
businesses in every country - training
tapes, public relations tapes, panel
discussions, interviews, informational
tapes, - anything that shows current
business vocabulary in use," he says.
Last year Professor White went to
France on the School's first sabbatical
leave. Part of her aSSignment was to
search for authentic new materials for
the classroom. She returned with suitcases
full of library materials, including
18 class-hours worth oftapes. "I also
made arrangements with a person at
my former school in France to tape
SOCiopolitical television programs -usually
panel discussions - for use in
our classes~'
About her sabbatical, Elza adds that
an important part was a kind of
reirnrnersion into the French culture.
"You can learn a lot from a book," she
said, "but how are people really
speaking? That's what's important for
our students~'
Exxon Grant
"In order to make the classes really
relevant," Dr. Schutte adds "we have
been engaging in a research project

"The idea for the research is based on
the fact that there is a mass of business

"The researchers gathered business

Dr. Schutte. Also included was material

I Thunderbird
Method
Although the Thunderbird method of
teaching is called by a variety of terms
- audio-lingual, aural-oral, - Dr. Lilith
Schutte, department chair, prefers to
call it simply "Intensive Language
Training~'
"It's not anyone particular method,"
she says. "The whole method rests on
constant involvement of the students,"
she says. "Classes are very small, and
there is much outside of the classroom
to supplement the classroom work," she
emphasizes.
The first level is mostly survival and
culturally-oriented topics - asking for
directions, introducing yourself, getting
around - plus topiCS to introduce the
basic grammar. Homework is based on
tapes of dialogues. Students learn to
speak fast and use correct native
pronunciation; and for the first six
weeks there is no writing at all.
Outside of class, students practice
with audio tapes, recorded by Thunderbird
faculty and proVided to all students.
With Level II, the dialogues become
much longer and more involved. Students
are expected to perform sketches
and ask questions. At this level they
begin to learn the all-important business
vocabulary, using actual business
materials, rather than literary writings.
Each student receives a foreign magazine
every week as part of the course
materials.
When the student reaches Level III,
business language is the whole thrust.
Most of the reading is based on
business situations and business
materials with ample newspaper articles
and supplemental materials that deal
with current business.
Outside of class, students get together
in language clubs to speak the language,
learn about the culture, and keep
current on business in the country.
Traditions like Asia Night, Middle
East Night or Bastille Day, sponsored by
the clubs, bring back strong memories
for alumni. Adding to the multicultural
atmosphere are more than 250 foreign
students from over 60 countries. "There
is always someone around who speaks
the language you are trying to learn,"
says one student.

appeared. With the help of business
faculty, they then selected the business
terms from more than 17,000 words
that were documented.
Although the two-year research
project is still in progress, the result is
expected to be a list of some 5,000
frequently recurring business terms
that students should know. Words like
"percent", "trade" and "market" that
turned up near the top of the list would
be included in intermediate language
classes. Words with more specific use
and less frequent occurrence would be
taught at a higher level.
The lexicon will contain the business
terms, examples of correct usage,
translation into German and Spanish,
and an indication of how frequently the
terms are used in each language.
"Someone who makes up a test or
teaching materials can then base a
judgment on the frequency of usage,"
says Dr. Schutte.
The project team, led by Dr. Schutte,
included Dr. Christa Britt and Dr. Jorge
Valdivieso. Faculty members from the
Department of World Business assisting
with the project are Dr. Carl R. Frear, Dr.
James Mills, and Dr. Dennis Guthery.
New Courses
mo new courses with speCial appeal
for advanced students are "Accelerated
Business Portuguese for Speakers of
Spanish" and "Economic and Commercial
French~'
The accelerated Portuguese class
gives Spanish-speaking students the
equivalent of two semesters ~n one.
Maria Pinheiro, Associate Professor of
Portuguese, said the students who take
the course are frequently interested in
all of Latin America and want to be sure
to include Brazil in their business plans.
The course was first offered in spring
semester, 1984, and three sections were
offered to accommodate the backlog.
Since then, two sections have been
offered each spring and fall, plus one
section in the summer. The feedback
from the students is very good, says
THUNDERBIRD MAGAZINE FALL '85
Dr. Mary Ann Critz, who also teaches the
course. "We try to make it oriented to
business in Latin America, and the
students say it gives them an extra plus
in their career~'
The new French course gives students
the advanced work they need to pass
the tests offered by the Paris Chamber
of Commerce. The course is taught by
Dr. Robert C.H. Dequenne or Antoinette
Lerond. "More and more students here
are better prepared in languages than
they were ten years ago, and more of
them waive out of the basic French
courses," says Professor Dequenne. "We

an additional asset for the resume.
In one case," Professor Dequenne says,
"a student actually got a job because
she'd had the course~'
The course not only includes exercises
in translation, but also has a great
deal of material on French companies,
the stock exchange, French accounting
systems, and aspects of doing business
in France. "The level of the students is
very high," says Professor Dequenne,
"and they seldom have trouble
expressing themselves in French~'

difficult one that encompasses both
written and oral language in commercial,
economic and business French,
with translating from English to French
as well as French to English. There are

sentences, multiple choice questions,
and letter-writing segments. Then, there
may be an article to read followed by
questions. The next day a similar
process is repeated with oral answers.
The "Diplome" examination is the next
level, and of course, it's even harder.
"Our students do well, however," says
Professor Dequenne. "Normally 90 to
95 percent of our students who take the
examination pass it~' The course, first
offered in the fall of 1984, has proven to
be a strong addition to the curriculum.
Professor Dequenne also teaches a
highly selective Winterim course in
Paris in which he engages guest
speakers from French businesses to talk
to the students.
Research
Faculty research and publications in
all three departments are another
measure of the increasing academic
stature ofThunderbird, and the Department
of Modern Languages is no
exception. The new Journal of Language
for International Business, now preparing
its third issue, fills an academic
void in the language area. Edited by
Thunderbird faculty members, Dr. Jorge
Valdivieso, and Dr. Mary Ann Critz, the
journal features articles relating to
business language, language teaching,
and book reviews.
The most recent major research
contribution is a new book by Akihisa
Kumayama, Associate Professor of
Japanese, who received a grant from
School PreSident, William Voris for the
project. Usage of the English Article
is a 724-page book that details every
conceivable use of "a", "an", and "the".
Does one say '~ new Japan" or "The
new Japan"? Should one say; "I made
a first offer on the house" or "I made
the first offer on the house. Such questions
are tackled in Kumayama's book.
Japanese language has no articles, and
their usage poses one of the thorniest
problems for Japanese.
Six years in the writing, Kumayama's
book is intended for students, office
workers, teachers, and business p~ople
who want to speak correct English.
It meets a need not filled by any other
book. Kumayama says that other books
deal with errors that are easy to explain,
but the rules are not clearly defined
and not easily comprehended. Most lack
sufficient examples. With at least two
examples for each usage totaling more

The
Early
Days
Alumni have especially fond
memories of the language faculty. A few
of these faculty are still on the campus.
Carmen Madrigal Boller and Larry
Finney '51, the senior faculty members,
came in 1952. Connie Estes came in
1956, and after an absence returned full
time in 1964. The 1960s also brought
Jorge Valdivieso, Dennis Corrigan,
Elyane Parshall, Jaime Perez, Helmut
Roessler and Elza White.
And all T'birds prior to 1971
remember fondly La Senhorita Maria
Leopoldina de Noronha, who came to
teach Portuguese and Spanish in 1948.
She still attends the class reunions to
lead a rousing chorus of "AlIa en el
Rancho Grande~'
Larry Finney remembers students
"who just had an awful time through
the first semester. Then somewhere
about six weeks into the second
semester a light would go on, and
they'd catch on. Some company would
hire them and send them down to
South America, and we'd get a letter
saying how well they are doing. That's
the greatest thing," he said.
Small classes are an importalttpart of language
instruction.
I English as a
Second
Language
Filling out the spectrum of language
offerings are the courses in English as a
Second Language (ESL), which enroll
from 80 to 130 students each semester.
"Our goals are very different," says
Professor Alice Johnson, coordinator of
the ESL section, "because English is the
language of instruction. One of our
main goals is to get them through
school. We want to improve their
listening and writing skills and their
ability to organize ideas to get their
message across on paper," she says.
Another difference between ESL and
the other languages is that all ESL
students start at the intermediate to
advanced level. Foreign students must
score at least 450 on the Test of English
as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) in order
to enter Thunderbird. After arriving at
Thunderbird, they take the Thunderbird
English Placement Battery and
those who score at the lower end must
take 15 hours of Intensive English to get
up to speed.
The method of teaching is also
different in that "we use an eclectic
approach rather than a modified audiolingual
method, because the students
not only start out at a higher level, but
also enter our classes with varying skill
competence and linguistic backgrounds;'
says Johnson. "Also, the
foreign students have the entire community
as their laboratory, so they
aren't totally dependent on the classroom
for language practice;'
Like the other languages, however,
there is strong emphasis on business
application. Students learn how to write
letters, prepare resumes, and organize
information. Johnson believes more
Americans could benefit from the
advanced business communication
class. Studies have shown that business
people, regardless of their expertise in
their field, often lack communication
skills and need such a course, she
advises.
English courses offer special challenges
because of the cultural and
linguistic mix of students. "We might
have students from Taiwan, France,
Japan, Brazil and Egypt all in the same
class, where other language classes
have mostly Americans;'
6
than 6,500 examples, Kumayama's book
is the most comprehensive work ever
done on the subject.
Outside the Classroom
Enriching the course work with
activities outside of class has always been
one of Thunderbird's strengths. Alumni
recall Christmas pageants and songfests,
led by La Senhorita Maria Leopoldina
de Noronha. For today's students, "The
play is the thing;'
Under the gUidance offaculty
members Professor Carmen MadrigalBoller,
and Professor Ruben Meneses,
students perform in one-act Spanish
plays by contemporary playwrights
usually on business, social criticism or
political views. One play; for example,
dealt with firms that set up business
in other countries. "We want students
to get an insight into Latin American
ways of living;' says Professor Boller.
The first play was a social criticism on
levels of society in Latin America. The
next one was a satire on.the lack of
statistical awareness of the Mexican
people, particularly about the census.
"In the first play; most of the actors
were native speakers; the American students
were too timid to audition;'
Boller said. The most recent play; however,
had only one native speaker out
of eleven in the cast.
Both faculty members agree that the
productions are a product of teamwork.
"Ruben has worked in the theater for
many years;' Boller says, "so he is very

good with the staging:' His 21 years
of theatrical experience includes writing,
acting, and doing background work
in amateur and professional theater.
Boller on the other hand, is the adrninistrativ~
force of the team. "For the first
play we did;' she remarked with amusement,
"we had to borrow everythingprops,
curtains, lights, costumes, and
scenery-from Glendale Community
College Theater Arts Department:' Both
Boller and Meneses expressed appreciation
for the support of the language
department and other faculty members,
and the administration. "Even the
Associated Students gave us $500 to
help in the purchase of a curtain;'
Boller said.
One important part is that the plays
are Videotaped, so the students can use
them in the library. To date, four plays
have been produced, one each spring
and fall semesters.
Nelda S. Crowell
Editor's Note: During the interviewsfor
this article, every faculty member, without
exception, added high praise for Dr.
Lilith Schutte, chair of the Department of
Modern Language since 1983:
"Lilith has brought us together as one
department:'
"She has brought us into the computer
age:'
"The best department chair since the
days of Frank Jackle:'
"Lilith Schutte should get the credit for
the progress of the department:'
"We feel she is workingfor the good of
the whole department:'
Comments like these were repeated over
and over, always ending with the
sentence, "[ hope we can persuade her to
stay as chairman:' Dr. Schutte is planning
to return to the classroom at the end of
her term as chair of the department. But
with the giant strides made by the
department under her leadership, one
can't blame the faculty for trying to
persuade her to stay as chair for one
more term.

Remember
La Senhorita
Former students call her "La
Senhorita"-as if she were the only
senhorita in the world. Certainly she is
one of a kind, the beloved Senhorita
Maria Leopoldina de Noronha, teacher
of Portuguese and Spanish at Thunderbird
from 1948 until her retirement
in 1971.
But retirement has not dimmed her
love for the students she cajoled,
scolded and teased into learning
Portuguese and Spanish. She calls them
"my precious ones" and they remember
her with gratitude and affection.
Alumni recall the evening classes she
held for the wives and her famous
chorus that livened the out-of-class
hours.

Valley College, recalls her as "one of the

"Her generosity is legendary;" he
adds. "I still treasure the Portuguese

Her instruction in Portuguese

Bebe Brown May' 63 tells of the days
when there were only three women
students on the campus. "She took us
under her wing. If our light was on late
at night, we would hear a knock on the
door and it would be Senhorita bringing
us sandwiches - 'to keep up your

Christmas would find her directing
students in the Mexican pageant "Las
Posadas", and the rest of the year she
kept students busy with the choruses.
It was natural, then, at the class of
1960 reunion that La Senhorita would
collect her precious ones around her
and burst into a rousing chorus of "Alla

La Senhorita loves to tell about the
time a visitor responded to a joke
saying, "Senhorita, you're pulling my
leg~' "I became very perturbed," she
recalled. "'That is a very serious
accusation, that I would be pulling
boys' legs,' I told him. 'Don't you ever
repeat that to anyone,'" she remembers
saying. "Dr. Shurz, then preSident,
thought it was so funny and within a
matter of hours, the whole campus
knew," she says with a twinkle.
The facts of her life are every bit as
colorful as the stories that surround
her. Descended from Portuguese royalty;
she was born in Lisbon then moved to
Angola where her father supervised
construction of the railroad, from
Angola to Mozambique. A diphtheria
epidemic took the lives of her mother,
brother and sisters, leaving hl:!r and her
father alone.
Educated at Sacred Heart Schools in
Spain, France, Italy; England, America
and Portugal, she spent fifteen years as a
teacher and interpreter in New York
before coming to Thunderbird. She has
taught Vietnamese refugees at Camp
Pendleton, Air Force personnel at Luke
Air Force Base, bankers at Citibank, and
wives of students at Thunderbird. She
never married, so her students were,
and still are, her children.
I Foreign
Languages
Seven foreign languages are now
offered on the Thunderbird Campus,
reflecting the course of world events
and American involvement abroad.
Spanish and Portuguese were the
original languages in 1946, in keeping
with Thunderbird's Latin American
emphaSiS. Spanish remains the most
popular language today, but French,
which was added in 1951, is a close
second.
Seventeen years later, the department
expanded again with the addition of
German, which still attracts more than
50 students each semester.
As world business looked toward Asia
and the Middle East, Thunderbird
added Japanese in 1971, Chinese and
Arabic in 1976. As might be expected,
Chinese is now the fastest growing
language, ranking third, behind French,
in student demand.
