to Higher
Education
Editor's Note: Occasionally, Thunderbird
Magazine zeroes in on a specific group
of alumni to highlight their accomplishments
and chronicle their professional
choices. Over the past year, we have featured
articles on Tbird entrepreneurs
and women Tbirds abroad. In this issue
we turn to Tbirds in academe-yes,
academe. We contacted more than eighty
T'birds who have chosen a career somewhat
different than what is expected from
a Thunderbird education, and more
than half of those responded. Read on
and discover what some Tbirds have
found in the hallowed halls of higher
education.
Turning their backs on the bull and
the bear, the fluctuating dollar and the
balance of trade, a small number of
T'bird graduates have chosen careers
in higher education. Those who
responded to our questionnaire generally
fell into three areas of academics:
business, languages or education, but
they also include an Associate in
Malacology at Harvard, and several
alumni in agriculture and law.
Also among their ranks are several
deans, associate deans and other
administrators.
For most, however, the choice did not
mean they turned their backs on their

Thunderbird experience. On the contrary;
for some, the decision to pursue
an academiC career was made while at
Thunderbird-because ofThunderbird
and the world it opened. For many
more, the decision to teach was made
after years of experience in business; it
was a decision to teach what they had
learned both in life and at Thunderbird.
After five years of working in Mexico,
Cameron D.Jones '53, returned to the
States and a good career in aerospace
engineering. Says Jones, "1 retired at 40
to return to the university for a higher
degree and a humanitarian career:'
Jones now teaches languages and
literature in Spanish and French at the
University of Arkansas. Charles "Terry"

Wetmore, who teaches in the School of
Business and Administrative Sciences
at California State University in Fresno,
says, "teaching business is not that
much of a departure from what I
prepared for at Thunderbird:'
Greater Satisfaction
Many respondents called their
switch from business to academics a
choice of lifestyle and a search for
greater professional satisfaction.
According to Robert Allen Jr. '49, his

Allen has been teaching business law
and accounting at Cerritos College in
Norwalk, Cahfornia for the last 21
years and "expects to go on forever~'
Still others cited the desire for less
travel and more time for themselves
and their families as primary reasons
for turning to academe. After 11 years
in business, according to Thomas J.
Adams '53, a career in higher education
offered him a "chance to take
control" oflife.

Nancy Napier '75, Assistant Professor
of Management and Organization
at the University of Washington, says
she knew while attending Thunderbird
that a Ph.D. was something she wanted
to pursue in the future. After graduation,
Napier found what she called lithe
perfect spot for a post-Thunderbird,
pre-Ph.D.-a large contract research
firm~' Her research for clients in such
areas as market opportunities for
foreign firms in the U.S. provided what
she calls "a perfect blend of the
academic and business worlds," and
inspired her to complete her doctorate
liMy year at Thunderbird

and I believe in it. My

me a 'dreamer;' dreamers

David Youmans '56
at Ohio State University in International
Labor and Human Resources.
Betsey Vogel Boze '76, who says she
"grew up in the academic world," was
accepted into her Ph.D. program while
at Thunderbird. In addition to her
strong academic interests, Boze is also
actively involved in private marketing
research while teaching at Centenary
College in Shreveport, Louisiana. Nick
Rothman '84, was in education before
Thunderbird and even continued to
teach part time while attending
Thunderbird. Not surprisingly,
Rothman returned to academe after
graduation and is currently teaching at
Charter College in Anchorage, Alaska.
Some, like HerbertJensen '78, cited
the economic climate at graduation as
motivation toward an academic career.
Jensen could not find the job he
wanted when he finished Thunderbird
and made the practical decision to stay
in school to support his family while
benefiting from the G.!. bill. Jensen
completed an M.B.A. and a Ph.D.
program and is now teaching managerial
and cost accounting at Boise State
UniverSity.
The Thunderbird Influence
But what of Thunderbird? What part
ofThunderbird do they take with them
into the classroom? For many who
teach languages and culture the answer
is clear. Alvord G. Branan '61 says, liMy
fascination with French culture was
born at Thunderbird and led to an M.A.
and a Ph.D. in French," and the current
chairmanship of the Department of
French and Italian at San Diego State
University.
For others who teach business, the
answers are similar but more general.
Many, like Richard L. McIntosh '57,
report that lithe Thunderbird experience
broadened the base of information"
used in their classes. The international
climate on campus and the
international focus in the Thunderbird
classroQm was cited as having an
impact on both what they teach and
how they deal with their foreign
students. Virtually all of the respondents
who teach business reported that
they incorporate some international
material in their courses, while those
who teach foreign languages say their

your own career,
remember you have a
responsibility to help the
countries in which you
work, (including) the
poor of those nations!'
Carlos E. Cortez '62
Thunderbird background adds dimension
to their standard language
curriculum.
Betsey Vogel Boze reports that many
of the Tbird courses are still helpful to
her because of their practical nature.
Recently, Shreveport, the city where
Boze lives, was made an international
free-trade zone. The Louisiana State
Commerce Department asked Boze to
speak to local businesses about getting
involved in international business. Says
Boze, "I drew on both my international
and Thunderbird experiences~'
Teaching style is another area where
Thunderbird's influence is directly felt
in the classrooms of these Tbird
educators. Many respondents named

specific Thunderbird professors like

Foster, Frank Jackle, John Lindholtz,
James Mills, Wally Reed, Don Schmidt,
William Lytle Schurz, Beverly Springer,
and George Wattles, who had a significant
impact on how they approach and
handle a classroom. Still more say the
international climate at Thunderbird
infected them with the desire to travel
and live abroad. Many continue to do
just that on their vacation time while
others enjoy developing and teaching
programs abroad.

When asked if there should be more
of an emphasis at Thunderbird for
students to enter higher education as a
profession, the majority gave a
resounding "no:' Their reasons
included a fear that the "mission of
Thunderbird" in preparing students for
the international arena might be
diluted if higher education was emphasized
as a career option. Virginia Sher
Ramadan '76, Professor ofLaw at New
York University echoes that sentiment.
"Thunderbird is fulfilling its valuable
purpose by teaching individuals to

succeed in the world of international
business. That goal is certainly a
sufficient one:'
Oliver Ford '66, Dean of the College
of Humanities and Social Sciences at
Indiana University of Pennsylvania,
however, believes academe needs a
Thunderbird influence. According to
Ford, "too many 'educators' are parochial
if not chauvinistic, monolingual
and professionally unaware of the
educational systems, philosophies and
methodologies of other cultures:'
Ford's sentiments are confirmed by

several respondents who teach education
and believe their Thunderbird
background is invaluable in giving a
global perspective on the learning
process.
A Word of Advice
Their advice to fellow Tbirds is
genuine and direct. In general, they
counsel Tbirds to make use of their
Thunderbird education in the broadest
sense possible-don't limit options to
the bulletin board at Career Services.
Don't count on language and cultural
expertise to carry you in business.
Emphasize business courses and cut
your teeth in a firm where you can
have wide exposure to all aspects of
international business. For those specifically
interested in academe, the
bottom line comes from Bennett Cole
'58. Says Cole, "Forget education if
you're not willing to go all the way for a
Ph.D:' Others advise emphaSiS on
computer skills and applications as
useful tools in academic careers.
The final word of advice, however,
comes from Keith Taylor '72, who
received his B.ET. when he was 35 years
old, his M.I.M. at 44, and his Ph.D. at
51 . Says Taylor, a professor of finance at
Sonoma State University, "You are
never too old to go back to schoo!:' All
of them feel Thunderbird was a
worthwhile experience, and as Bruce
Jacobsen '63 calls it, "a life investment
well spent," for academe.

Alumni Placement Coordinator
Career Services
for Alumni
Most people think of the Campus
Placement Service as a tool for the new
graduate who goes through on-campus
interviews to get that ftrst position. In
reality, the Thunderbird Career Services
Center provides a full range of
placement services, not only for new
graduates, but also for alumni.
The Thunderbird Alumni Placement
Service, under the direction of Karen
Tisdale, Alumni Placement Coordinator,
maintains mes of position descriptions
and matches them to resumes of
participating alumni.
"If a resume is on me that meets the
qualillcations set by a company, we
send the resume to the company and
notify the indiVidual," said Tisdale. "At
that point it is up to them to pursue any
further communication:'
Participation is quite Simple: alumni
with at least three years of related work
experience need only submit 12 copies
of their resume and a $50 maintenance
fee which covers costs for one year. For
participating companies there is no fee.
The service has been in operation for
the past ten years, and during 1985
more than 400 job openings were
received.

REPORT
85-
86
Dear Friends:
As Chairman of the Founders Club
for 1985 -86, I would like to thank each one
of you who chose to support Thunderbird
at the Founders Club level. Your enthusiasm
and commitment to the school serves to
reinforce the standards of excellence first
established by our founders in 1946.
I am pleased to announce that Founders
Club membership increased by 3 % during
1985-86 for a total of 418 members. Of this
total, 404 were alumni. It was also rewarding
to see that 198 of you were returning
members from last year.
The 1985-86 Founders Club made
contributions in excess of $68,375. This
total represents almost 20% of all gifts
received from individuals during the year
(all individuals contributed a total of
$371,903). A total of $64,990 was received
from the 404 alumni Founders Club
members.
It has been truly gratifying to serve as
your Founders Club Chairman. I especially
appreciated the warm personal notes that
I received from many of you, as well as the
constant show of support most of you
have displayed over the years. Finally, I would
like to sincerely thank each of you, once
again, for your dedication and commitment
to our school.
Warmest regards,
Berger Erickson
Dear Friend of Thunderbird:
The past year was indeed a banner
year for the annual fund. Here are some
highlights:
· total contributions increased by 6% for
a total more than 1.2 million dollars
· alumni gifts for 1985-86 totalled
$221,527, which represents a 7%
increase over 1984-85
· matching gift donations totalled
66,334. Of the 717 eligible donors
who made a contribution during
1985-86,57% took advantage of this
opportunity to match or even triple
their donation
· Founders Club membership grew
by 3% for a total of 418 members.
Alumni participation in the club
increased by 5% for a total of 404
alumni Founders Club members.
· The Thunderbird 500 Club had a
record 34 members, reflecting a 42%
increase over last year.
As you can see, the financial support
that Thunderbird receives through contributions
is substantial. Thank you very
much for participating in this show of
support. It sets an example for all of us,
and it will enable Thunderbird to continue
to excel.
Pass the word - annual giving to
Thunderbird is a worthwhile habit to
acquire!
Sincerely;
