Thunderbirds celebrate
Editor's Note: Twice each year the
Thunderbird Alumni Association of
Europe holds a weekend reunion. This
spring the event was held in Oslo,
Norway, during the Norwegian national
holiday. Other reunions have been held
in places like Bad Ischl, Austria; Paris;
and Brussels.
The next European reunion is scheduled
for Nov. 1-2 in London, and all
T'birds are encouraged to plan vacations
and business trips to coincide with tbat
event. In May, 1987, the reunion will be
held in Venice.
And this is just the beginning. The
European Reunions can serve as a model
for others to follow. A Mediterranean
reunion is in the talking stages. Asia and
South America are other possibilities. But
it takes planning and leadership. People
like John Cook in Brussels, Mariya
Toohey in West Germany, Dominique
Thisse in Paris, and Jan Blichfeldt in
Oslo have proven it can be done. The
time to start is now.
When more than 150 Thunderbirds,
spouses, and friends gather in one of
Europe's great capital cities during a
festive national holiday for a weekend
packed with activity, the result is
another spectacular European Reunion:
Oslo,May 17, 1986.
Starting with a Friday night cocktail
buffet, through Saturday's Constitution
Day celebration, and climaxing with a
Saturday night dinner cruise down the
Oslofjord, the reunion was one successful
event after another.
Sunday brunch at the Norwegian
Folk Museum Restaurant concluded a
weekend that had something for
everyone-not an easy task when "everyone"
included people from Belgium,
England, Holland, Norway, Sweden,
Switzerland, Turkey, the United States,
and West Germany. It was a crosssection
of Thunder birds ranging from
the class of ' 52 to a prospective student
for the class of '88. Their businesses
included fIrms like Citibank, American
Express, Merrill Lynch, ffiM, Nestle,
7-Eleven, Bergen Bank and the State of
North Carolina.
A few were old friends or classmates'
most had never met before. But the '
commonality was that indefInable something
we call the Thunderbird Mystique
-a blend of curiosity and gregariousness,
with a love of fun and adventure.
Oslo
Blessed with good weather, the event
was one of the most successful European
reunions ever, and alumni began
planning immediately for the next one:
London Nov. 1-2,1986.

Computers
Come
to
Thunderbird
for Language
& Business
In the early 1970s pocket calculators
replaced the slide rule as the standard
mathematical and business tool. Now,
little more than 10 years later, yet
another technological advancement is
rapidly spreading throughout the business
world. Microcomputers have
become standard operating tools in
small businesses and large corporations.
Business schools across the
nation have discovered that if their
students are to learn how to be
corporate managers they must learn to
manage microcomputers.
Today's Thunderbird student cannot
avoid the use of microcomputers in the
required course work. Following the
direction set by President William Voris,
microcomputers are rapidly being
incorporated into the school's curriculum,
particularly in the Department
of World Business. According to
Dr. Clifton B. Cox, department chair, a
primary goal of the department is to
increase students' computer literacy.
An essential Brst step in Thunderbird's
computer literacy program was to
familiarize the faculty with microcomputers.
Last fall, President Voris offered
a $1,000 subsidization grantto all
professors wishing to purchase their
own personal computers. 1Wenty-nine
professors took advantage of the opportunity
and began to study ways in
which they could integrate microcomputers
into their courses. Professor
Francisco Carrada-Bravo of the Department
of World Business acquired an
IBM personal computer through Voris's
program.
liThe President's offer is changing the
way the professors teach," said CarradaBravo.
"This offer places us in the lead;
now we have a very good ratio of
professors to computers. This is important
because the faculty will be the force
behind the changes that must occur.
Computers are tools that allow us to
J teach better. They also make teaching
more fun:'
The next step was to acquire 26 new
IBM personal computers to augment
the 16 terminals already linked to the
school's primary computer system. Currently
these new personal computers

Thunderbird's current plans include
construction of the Joan and David
Uncoln Computer Center, which will
provide a common area for all minicomputer
terminals and microcomputers
that are used by students.
When completed the facility will provide
7,145 square feet of space for
computers and related equipment, support
staff, programming, conference
rooms, and student access.
llIUNDERBJRD MAGAZINE SUMMER '86
The Department of World Business is
working to integrate computers into at
least 15 of its courses, particularly those
concerned with fmance, marketing,
market research, banking, accounting,
and corporate decision-making models.
Assistant Professor John Zerio teaches
market research and is active in the
department's search for optimal software
programs. He reflects the department'sattitude
when he says that a
hands-on approach is essential in
learning how to analyze data and apply
it to management decisions. "You can
read about data analysis and computer
application all you want, but the only
way to really learn how tor analyze data
is to do it with a computer:'
The standard software package in
MIM and MBA programs is Lotus 1-2-3.
Its spreadsheet and graphic capabilities
have made it the most popular program
on the market and a standard worksheet
for many Thunderbird courses.
Among other things, the introductory
computer course offered through the
Department of World Business familiarizes
students with Lotus 1-2-3's spreadsheet
analysis. For students who have
waived the introductory computer
course requirement but are yet unfamiliar
with Lotus 1-2-3, a five-week,
non-credit course is offered to acquaint
them with the program and its application
in their course work and future
careers.
"Stat-Pac," another popular software
program for statistical analysis, is being
used in Thunderbird's statistics, market
research, and international finance and
trade courses.
The final software package widely
used by students on campus is "Word
Star," a popular word processing program.
Gone are the days of timeconsuming
draft rewrites. Through
mere push-button commands, texts can
be edited, expanded and saved until a
suitable final form is achieved. "Word
Star" can be checked out in the library
and used on any of the personal
computers housed there.
While the emphasis is on software
application, the need to understand and
master the computer terminal itself is
equally important. James Garvin of IBM
Corporation recently arrived at Thunderbird
on a year-long executive loan
program to research and develop an
optimum plan for the role of computers
in training computer-literate international
managers. Garvin is assisting
faculty members to integrate computers

Kanji
Computers
At ftrst glance, integration of computers
into course work may seem to be
dominated by the Department of World
Business. Not so. The Department of
Modem Languages is also using computers,
and in a most unique manner.
The newest additions to the school
are two IBM 5550 personal computers.
Currently these two computers are for
the use of the Department of Modem
Languages and any staff member who
speaks Chinese or Japanese. Instructors
of both Chinese and Japanese will no
longer be required to distribute handwritten
material to their language
students, but can now print course
assignments on the computer.
The IBM Corporation recognized
Thunderbird's need for this type of
sophisticated technology and the two
Kanji systems have been loaned to the
Department of Modem Languages for a
year. The characteristic that distinguishes
the Kanji systems from any
other IBM 5550 in the United States is
apparent on their keyboards. These
micro-computers perform keyboard
functions and execute commands in
Chinese, Japanese and English.
The system is identical to the 5550
mini-computers that IBM sells in Japan
for home and office use. Not available
for sale in the United States, both the
hardware and software was sent to
Thunderbird via IBM's Tokyo office.
Only the computers' memory system
comes from IBM's American production
plant, due to voltage differences
between Japan and the United States.
After all, what's
going on here is
and should be a
reflection of what
is going on in the
corporate world:'
The software programs for these two
computers are written in Kanji, the
Japanese alphabet that uses Chinese
characters. Because of the thousands of
Kanji character combinations, typewriters
or other keyboards in Kanji have
heretofore been very unwieldy; often
completely encircling the keyboard
operator with layers of various character
keys. The IBM 5550 system ·presents
the operator with successive choices for
stroke combinations until the completed
Kanji character is produced. The
desired Kanji character can usually be
completed in less than three keystrokes.
A printout in Japanese from the Kanji computer
The computer operator can initially
type Japanese Hiragana characters and
transliterate the text into Kanji, or can
type the text in Roman letters and then
proceed through the steps of Hiragana
to Kanji transliterations. There are
I
/

..

THUNDERBIRD MAGAZINE SUMMER '86
many possibilities for Kanji character
combinations to form different words
that have similar meanings, yet have
significantly subtle differences. Thus
the system offers a full range of
character combinations, allowing the
operator to choose exactly what is
wanted as opposed to a transliteration
that is "close enough:'
Depending on the keyboard chosen,
the operator can type in either Japanese
or Chinese characters. Because the
Japanese market is much more technically
developed than the Chinese market
for computers, the system has
greater capabilities when typing in
Chinese characters on the Kanji keyboard
Japanese characters than when typing
Chinese characters. Nevertheless, this is
the most advanced software package
and keyboard using Chinese characters
that is presently available anywhere in
the world.
As Dr. Lilith Schutte, former chair of
the Department of Modern Languages
points out, "This Kanji system distinguishes
Thunderbird as being a forerunner
in the highly sophisticated
approaches to teaching languages that
are emerging:'

Thunderbird Alumni
Association
The Thunderbird Alumni Association
will celebrate its second anniversary of
incorporation this November. Its fIrst
annual meeting is scheduled for
November 15, 1986.
The ultimate goal of the association is
to serve the American Graduate School
of International Management (Thunderbird),
its alumni, faculty and staff,
students, and friends. More specmcally,
the association is committed to further
developing the follOWing focus areas:
Student Recruitment, Scholarships,
Alumni Recognition Program and
Awards, Chapter Development, Continuing
Educatign/Career and Professional
Development, Alumni Annual
Fund" Institutional Relations, Curriculum
Development, and Corporate
Relations.
An important accomplishment of the
association has been a structure for
two-way communication among the
alumnus-at-Iarge, local chapter
leadership, the alumni association, and
ultimately the school's board of
trustees. Currently two alumni, Charles
Stockholm '56 and Dan Witcher '50,
serve on both the association board of
directors and the School's board of
trustees. In addition, the trustees have
created an ex officio position for the
alumni association preSident to ensure
that the communication link between
the two groups continues.
The Thunderbird Alumni Association,
under the leadership of committee
chairman, Dan Witcher '50, has also
created an alumni awards program
establishing the Thunderbird Alumni
Association Distinguished Alumni
Awards and the Thunderbirds Who's
Who recognition program. The fIrst
awards will be presented at this year's
Alumni Homecoming/Balloon Races
November 15.
The reCipient of the Jonas Mayer
Distinguished Alumnus Award, the
school's highest honor, will be selected
from among the recipients of the
Thunderbird Alumni Association Dis-tinguished
Alumnus Award. This year's
reCipient, recognized at the December
commencement ceremonies, will be the
first to be selected by alumni peers,
which, Dan Witcher pOints out,
" ... should make the award even more
meaningfut'
Additional projects of the association
include the Communications Committee
survey of alumni leaders, conducted
in cooperation with the Thunderbird
Magazine Editor. As a result of the
survey findings, Doug Quelland '72,
committee chairman, reported that
alumni updates would be again sorted
by class year, beginning with this issue.
Doug further explains, "Eventually a
geographic cross index may be included,
and we are currently researching the
possibility of adding a business directory
supplement to the magaZine on a
trial basis~'
The Chapter Development Committee
has focused priorities and standardized
formation tasks for potential chapters
and clubs. The chapter kit, developed
by chairman, Jeri Towner '78, Eric
Denniston '80, and other committee
members, incorporates proven ideas
from already established chapters into
a format that will benefIt emerging
groups.

Two types of groups are currently
recognized by the Thunderbird Alumni
Association: chapters and clubs. A
chapter is the more formal organization,
usually established when 100 or more
alumni live in a given area. Bylaws and
budget are required, and the group
shall have an elected board of directors
of at least 10 people.
A club is a less formal organization
requiring only a two-person steering
committee or a three-person slate of
officers. Bylaws, budget and a formal
board of directors are not reqUired, and
no minimum or maximum number of
alumni is required.
Both chapters and clubs receive
regular communication from the association
including the Alumni Leaders
Newsletter, and both are expected to
establish goals and objectives.
Interested groups should submit a
letter of application for club or chapter
status to the Thunderbird Alumni
Association. Applications are available
through the Office of Alumni Relations.
It is only through participation that
the Alumni Association can continue to
be of service. Each of you is encouraged
to become involved by contacting your

strong possibility that the use of a
computer, particularly a self-contained
personal computer, would be of assistance
in the job. For graduates chOOSing
careers closer to the mainstream of the
modern world, the use of computers
early in their career is inevitable.
College recruiters are looking for MIM
graduates who possess some working
knowledge of or a technical aptitude
toward computer application, and who
also demonstrate a desire to learn what
they don't yet know.
The goal is to remain committed to the
most efficient means for teaching good
international managers, using whatever
technology is most appropriate. Today
that technology is the personal
computer.
