the audience was in a festive mood.
"Some people are born to make a difference
on this earth. Two such people
are Joan and David Lincoln," said
Dr. Voris when introducing the people
whose generous gift made the new
computer services center a reality Comments
from David Lincoln stressed the
importance of cross-cultural training
for the United States to be competitive
in to day's world market. Citing the
recent cultural exchange of ideas
between the U.S. and the U.SSR. at
Chautauqua, he said Thunderbird is well
suited to beginning a similar program
to bring American businessmen closer
to foreign cultures. Lincoln referred
to the School as a premier trainer of
managers for international management
and said the alumni, 20,000
strong, are in a strong position to maintain
leadership in the international arena.

"Modern Languages
feels privileged to be the
first of the three departments
to move into new
facilities. We have a
feeling of pride to be
able to work and receive
our students in such
beautiful and comfortable
offices."
MARlA PINHEIRO
CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGUAGES
The Modern Languages Building is
the first of three faculty office centers to
be completed. The 10,971 square-foot
center was begun on October 3,1986,
and finished on schedule although it
took a few more weeks for all the furniture
to arrive. The facility was designed
so that most of the offices have a window
and all doors open onto a central
hallway. It was also professionally decorated.
There is a conference room for
department meetings, two research
rooms where student assistants may
work, a computer room and a kitchen
area - all major additions to the offices
which were formerly located in two
separate areas.
Dr. Marshall Geer, vice president for
academic affairs, noted that the new
facility promotes interaction among the
language professors and facilitates
research. These facilities will be instrumental
in attracting and retaining quality
faculty as they provide tangible
evidence of the importance of these
individuals to the institution. During
the '40s and '50s, languages were the
cornerstone of the Thunderbird program,
so chOOSing this faculty office
center to be built first was a way to
reaffirm the importance of language
instruction. Dr. Geer stated, "Language
symbolizes Thunderbird. It is what sets
us apart from other business schools."

"Whereas the Modem Languages
Building signifies our commitment to
our past tradition, the new computer
center represents our efforts to keep
pace with the expectations of modem
business schools. It symbolizes our
coming of age," stated Dr. Marshall
Geer, vice president for academic affairs.
The Joan and David Lincoln Computer
Services Building was completed in
August, 1987. Technical difficulties
involving faulty fiberop tics in the data
lines delayed the opening of the center
until September 21, three weeks after
classes had started.
A $500,000 grant from Joan and David
Lincoln covered most of the construction
expenses for the $648,000 building
and an additional $134,000 was spent
on equipment and furniture. Clarke
and Elizabeth Nelson donated 40 IBMSystem
2/30 personal computers to the
center, totaling approximately $60,000.
The Nelsons have a personal interest in
the School. Their son, Charles, graduated
from Thunderbird in 1981 and their
daughter, Lyn, is currently a student.
The high-tech building houses 67
terminals and 17 printers for student
use, the new Prime 9955 mainframe,
and Computer Services' administrative
offices.
In the event of a fire, an odorless gas,
halon, will be released into the room
where the mainframe is located. The
halon will adhere to oxygen molecules
to prevent combustion. This preventive
measure does not leave a residue
or damage the computer equipment.
The Prime is protected from power
outages by a battery that will kick in
immediately and a generator to relieve
the battery.
The School has replaced the Prime 400
and Prime 2250 mainframes with the
Prime 9955. In addition to improving
cost effiCiency, the new 9955 has
three times the storage capacity and
four times the processing power of
the former mainframes combined. Normally
listed at $440,000, the new
Prime was purchased for $160,000 as
a slightly used machine. Prime agreed
to guarantee the computer as new.
The number of terminals connected to
the Prime have been increased from 69
to 128, increasing access for administration
and students alike.
Primelink, a new system package,
permits some IBM personal computers
to access the Prime. This enables
students to use personal computer software,
such as Lotus 1-2-3, and store
their data in the Prime. The primary
advantage of this option is being able
to store databases too large for a diskette.
Another recent acquisition, the
integrative administrative package,
Compass, permits on-line registration
and centralizes accounting records.
In a program as intensive as Thunderbird's,
computer applications in
courses are essential to enable students
to have time to do a variety of complex
problems. Seventeen courses in

Thunderbird has signed a contract with
Video Placement Company, Inc., to be
one of 25 educational institutions in
the United States to receive a videoconferencing
unit free of charge. The
videophone satellite network will be
used primarily for on-campus interviews
and placement activity.
A study of the human interaction of
the system has been conducted and the
results of the test are extremely positive.
Students and recruiters alike find
they are comfortable using the system.
The video telephone allows the simultaneous
reception of video and audio
between two units, even though they
may be thousands of miles apart. Both
parties perceive direct eye contact, and
because there is only a fraction of a
second delay in sound, a fast-paced
and personal discussion is possible.
Most students who participated in
the test market in terview said they were
comfortable with the setup. Companies
involved in the test market include
Harris Corporation, General Electric Co.,
and the Boeing Co.
The equipment is scheduled for installation
this fall. This new technology
will not replace the campus visit by
recruiters, but rather enhance the
decision-making process.

It was just a dozen short years ago,
with bags in hand, that the happily
married, father of three children set off
for the land of cactus and palm trees
and a career in international business,
leaving behind a 15-year career as a
major in the military.
