Executives and Educators Exchange Ideas
Maintaining and seeking advice
from Thunderbird's closest corpo­rate
friends are the key goals of the
World Business Advisory Council,
according. to Randy Schilling, direc­tor
of development and coordinator
of the council.
Formed in 1983, the council con­sists
of approximately 55 corporate
executives who together provide
input and act as a sounding board
for the World Business Department
and Thunderbird administration.
"The relationship between the
School and the council is really a
two-way street in which both sides
present ideas and suggestions," said
Schilling. "The council provides
valuable input on how we can best
prepare students for the corporate
environment. At the same time, fac­ulty
and administrators discuss with
the council ideas and changes they
might want to develop in their areas
of expertise."
According to Allen McInnes, chair­man
of the council and executive
vice president of Tenneco Inc., the
relationship between the council
and the school has been an excel­lent
one. "We have made several
suggestions to the World Business
Department and it's obvious that
the department is interested in
what we have to say."
Suggestions made by the council
and then implemented by the ad­ministration
in recent years include
the requirement of the 400-level
world business core courses for
all students.
'The council believes strongly
that students should take as many
upper level business courses as pos­sible,"
said McInnes, adding that
"this is possible if students waive
out of the basic courses before they
arrive at Thunderbird."
McInnes indicated that the coun­cil
would also like to raise the stan­dard
of the faculty to an even higher
level by developing an externship
program. "With this program, fac­ulty
would work with business leaders
in the community and then bring
back a fresh perspective to the class­room,"
he said.
In addition to the exchange of
ideas between corporate members
and Thunderbird faculty, Schilling
said that the council enhances the
employment effort on campus as
well as the financial base, noting
that more than half of the members
recruit students regularly. At the
same time, council members con­tribute
approximately 40 percent of

"With these types of figures, it's
easy to see why we want to keep a
close contact with these corpora­tions,"
he said.
The most recent council meeting
was held March 5 on the Thunder­bird
Campus. Some of the topics
discussed at the meeting included
the importance of increasing the
advertising budget for the continued
recruitment of quality students, the
development of a marketing plan,
the need for more student intern-
, ships, and the possibility of devel­oping
a more concentrated program
for students in either marketing
or finance.
The next meeting of the council
will be September 24 and 25 at the
American International Group in
New York City.

enroll in the three-week January
Winterim program, which features
guest lecturers from major corpora­tions
and other specialists.
Six courses are normally offered
in the World Business Department
plus courses in cross-cultural
communication and other current
subjects in the International Studies
Department. Three semester hours
of credit may be earned.
While alumni are always invited
to enroll for courses on campus, the
Winterim program offers a partic­ularly
good opportunity because of
its short length and the outstanding
list of guest lecturers. The mild
winter climate is an added plus.
Cost of the program is $925 for
the three-week session. Because all
courses are offered simultaneously,
alumni may register for only one of
the courses. On-campus lodging
may also be available at a reason­able
cost. Nearby apartments are
also generally available on a short­term
basis.

DOCTORATE
AWARDED TO FINLEY
PETER DUNNE, JR.
As part of Thunderbird's 40th
anniversary celebration, Finley Peter
Dunne,Jr. was awarded an Honorary
Doctor of International Law degree
during ceremonies held prior to the
Spring Banquet on March 5.
A prime mover in the founding of
the School, Dunne acted as secre­tary-
treasurer when the School was
founded as the American Institute
for Foreign Trade. With Lt. General
Barton Kyle Yount as president,
Dunne helped recruit a faculty of
experts on Latin America and inter­national
business. He served as sec­retary-
treasurer until 1951 and
continued as a member of the board
of directors. In receiving his degree,
Dunne said, "Thunderbird is our
dream, General Yount's and mine,
carried out to the fullest and beyond."
NEW WORLD
BUSINESS CHAIR
ANNOUNCED
Dr. PaulJohnson has been appointed
chair of the World Business Department
for a three-year term starting July 1,
1987. He succeeds Dr. Clifton Cox,
former CEO of Armour and Co., who is
retiring after five years in the position.
Currently a member of the Thunder­bird
World Business faculty, Dr. Johnson
is founding preSident and member of the
board of directors of the First Central
Bank of Phoenix. His previous exper­ience
includes his own financial consult­ing
business and twelve years with the
European American Bank where he was
Executive Vice President and Division
Manager. He also has ten years' exper­ience
with IBM and two years with
Irving Trust Company.
He holds bachelors degrees in indus­trial
and electrical engineering from the
University of Dayton, an MBA from
Xavier University, and a Ph.D. from
Stanford. He has taught courses in bus­iness
policy and entrepreneurship at
Thunderbird since 1982.
EXECUTIVE
IN RESIDENCE
Allen T. McInnes, executive vice pres­ident
of Tenneco, Inc., was Executive in
Residence from March 23-25, speaking
to several classes and addressing a
World Business Department banquet on
March 23 and the student body on the
afternoon of March 25. The topic for his
banquet speech was "Trade Warfare,"
and he spoke on "Tenneco's Approach
to International Business" during the
afternoon address.
In addition to being executive vice
president of Tenneco, a $14 billion
diversified energy company based in
Texas, McInnes serves as Chairman of
the World Business Advisory Council
and is an Ex-officio member of the
Board of Trustees. He is a business grad­uate
of the University of Texas, where
he received his Ph.D. in business and
economics and he is a graduate of the
advanced management program of the
Harvard Business School.
THUNDERBIRD ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PROGRESS REPORT
Under the able leadership of its
first president, Charles M. Stockholm
'56, and with the invaluable assist­ance
of Director of Alumni Relations,
Bobbie M. Boyd, the Thunderbird
Alumni Association has completed
its first full year of operation.
During this period Significant
strides were made to effectively
focus alumni support worldwide.
Committees have been formed to
address such areas of traditional
alumni interest as:
- Alumni Awards and Recognition
- Career Management and
Continuing Education
- Fund Raising
- Chapter Development
- Marketing and Communications
In addition, committees covering
such diverse interests as physical
plant development, budget and
finance, and alumni leaders con­ference
have been formed.
All in all, the association is off to
a running start. Challenges lie not
so much in generating enthusiasm,
but in effectively channeling the
energies of more than 20,000 alumni
for their mutual benefit and that of
Thunderbird.
The following represents a sum­mary
of specific accomplishments
and project status:
Chapters and Clubs: Ten chapters!
clubs have begun the process of affil­iation.
Applications from 14 others
are in the works. The association
anticipates officially granting chapter!
club status to more than 24 appli­cants
by this summer.
Continuing Education and Career
Management: Students in Dr. James
Goodnow's World Business class
conducted a continuing education
study that included a series of focus
groups and a questionnaire. Results
of both methods will be used by the
Thunderbird Alumni Association
Continuing Education and Career
Management committee to formulate
a plan of action.
Awards and Recognition: The first
in a series of awards to alumni were
made last fall, including the most
prestigious: the Jonas Mayer Distin-guished
Alumnus Award.
Alumni Leaders Conference: The
First Annual Alumni Leaders Confer­ence
was held on campus in October
1986. Nineteen alumni participated
in what was considered an excellent
means of improving communications
and in sharing solutions to issues
confronting our chapters and clubs.
Fund Raising: A separate fund has
been established to allow alumni
to contribute to the Thunderbird
Alumni Association. Overall, alumni
participation in fund raising has
increased more than 75 percent this
past year.
Marketing and Communications:
The committee will be working with
students in conducting an image
analysiS of Thunderbird.
Student Recruitment: The associa­tion
is exploring ways in which the
Alumni Education Counselor pro­gram
can be effectively integrated
with our total association effort.

EAST-WEST TRADE:
OPPORfUNITIES
AND OBSTACLES
The Eighth Annual Business Trends
Forum on April 3-4 proved to be a true
educational experience in more ways
than one. Conference attendees were
provided a wealth of information by 17
nationally-renowned experts on East­West
trade and economic reform in
China, Eastern Europe, and the Soviet
Union. Student organizers of the forum
learned firsthand about problems in
East-West relations when two top Soviet
trade representatives were denied per­mission
by the US. State Department to
travel to Glendale and attend the forum
two days before it was scheduled to begin.
Also denied permission to travel to the
Thunderbird campus was Igor Makurin,
New York bureau chief for the Soviet
news agency TASS.
Soviet Dimitry A. Solovykh, deputy
president of the US.-USSR. Trade and
Economic Council, was able to attend
and present the Soviet perspective be­cause
he was not a government official.
For the Western perspective, the
speakers list read like a "Who's Who"
of Americans involved in trade with
Eastern bloc countries, including Robert
D. Schmidt, chairman of the board of
the American Committee on US.-Soviet
Relations;James Giffen, president of the
US.-US.S.R. Trade and Economic Coun­cil,
Inc.; Gary Gallagher of the Okla­homa
Wheat Commission; Roger W
Robinson, president of RWR Inc., and
former member of the National Security
Council; and representatives from
Honeywell, Enserch Corporation, Hughes
Helicopter, Business International and
the US. State Department and Com­merce
Department.
Student Robert Stone was chairman of
the IBTF Forum Committee, which
organized the event.
GIFTS
First Interstate Bank of Arizona
recently pledged $50,000 over a five­year
period to the Faculty Center Build­ing.
At the conclusion of their pledge,
their cumulative contributions to
Thunderbird will be over $140,000.
Robert Duckworth, chairman, is a mem­ber
of the Thunderbird Board of Trustees.
Salt River Project has also pledged
$20,000 over the next two years to the
Faculty Center Building.

LATIN AMERICAN
BUSINESS
CONFERENCE
The Business Association of Latin
America held its annual meeting on the
Thunderbird campus February 26-28.
During the three-day conference top
business leaders and educators from
various Latin American countries dis­cussed
and presented papers on a wide
range of business-related topics includ­ing
the current debt crisis. The program
director was Dr. Dennis Guthery, World
Business professor.

VENTURE CAPITAL
FORUM
"Taking Your Venture Abroad" will be
the topic of an international entre­preneurship
and venture capital forum
to be held on the Thunderbird Campus
October 7-9,1987.
The three-day program is co-sponsored
by the Thunderbird Management Center
and Venture Magazine.
The forum will offer information for
entrepreneurs who want to expand their
businesses into overseas markets and
for individuals who wish to start an
international business. Speakers and
panelists will include international ven­ture
capitalists and successful interna­tional
entrepreneurs from Europe, Asia,
Australia and the United States. For

CHANCELLOR
SEARCH CONTINUES
Advertisements for the chancellor's
position have been placed in the AACSB
Newsline, Chronicle of Higher Education,
Sunday New York Times, and the eastern
edition of the Wall Street Journal. The
person selected is expected to be a can­didate
for the president's position upon
retirement of the incumbent. Desirable
qualifications include a doctorate plus
high level international academic, bus­iness,
or government ex-perience; admin­istrative
experience as a university vice
president, dean, or equivalent high posi­tion
in government or business; familiar­ity
with foreign cultures, and experience
in resource development and strategic
planning.
ALUMNI
ACTIVITY SOARS
During 1986, the Office of Alumni
Relations updated 40,572 alumni records.
In addition, the office printed 4,543 lists
of alumni and printed approximately
190,000 labels for various alumni
communications.
The number of alumni events of record
has increased by 350 percent during the
period 1980 to 1987. In addition, the
number of regularly scheduled First
Tuesday alumni gatherings has increased
177 percent from 1984 to present.
These figures are indicative of a general
increase in alumni programming and a
corresponding commitment, on the part
of alumni, to Thunderbird.
SOUTHWEST
LABOR STUDIES
Thunderbird hosted the l3th annual
Southwest Labor Studies Conference
March 27 and March 28. Keynote
speakers included Douglas Fraser,
former president of the UAW and for­mer
member of the board of dfrectors
of Chrysler Corporation; Jack Barbash,
a top labor economist from the Univer­sity
of Wisconsin; and John Laslett, a
UCLA professor and one of the top five
labor historians in the nation. Dr.
Beverly Springer, International Studies
Department, was program chair for
the conference.

157 schools/universities that claim a
place in the sun internationally. How­ever,
Thunderbird and less than a dozen

Thunderbird is striving to strengthen

of 12 to 15 million dollars in endowment
by the time we reach our 50th anniver­sary.

THUNDERBIRD
AND ASU OFFER
JOINT DEGREE
Thunderbird and Arizona State
University began a joint degree
program during the spring semester.
The program includes two parts: a dual
degree MBNMIM division and a cross­registration
division.
Students who wish to cross register
will be allowed to enroll in nine hours
at either campus. Students who wish to
earn both the MBA and MIM degrees
must meet the requirements and be
accepted by both schools.
Specific requirements for ASU students
applying for an MIM degree include
completing 30 hours at Thunderbird at
the 400/500 level. Thunderbird students
interested in the MBA program must
complete at least 27 hours of advanced
course work at ASU.

International Studies Professor John
Frankenstein's article, "Business in
China: Western and Chinese Perspec­tives,"
appeared in the January 1987
issue of Euro-Asia Business Review,
published by the Euro-Asia Centre,
INSEAD, Fontainebleau.
Robert McMahon, Professor of World
Business, has written a book recently
published, entitled: Bank Marketing
Handbook: How to Compete in the Finan­cial
Services Industry, Bankers Publish­ing
Company, Boston.
Dr. Andris Trapans, International
Studies Department, has written a mono­graph
recently published in Sweden,
Soviet Military Power in the Baltic Area,
(Stockholm, LNF 1986). It deals with
development of Soviet armed forces in
the Baltic Sea littoral.
Assistant Professor Frank Tuzzolino
presented a paper entitled, "Incentive
Signaling and Firm Value: The Divesti­ture
Case," at the Southern Finance
Meetings in New Orleans. He also
served as a discussant on the program.
Dr. Marshall Geer, vice president for
Academic Affairs, has been elected to a
two-year term to the Executive Commit­tee
of the Association of International
Education Administrators.
Professor Alice Parker Johnson,
Modern Languages, has been appointed
to serve on the Teachers of English to
Speakers of Other Languages standing
committee on rules and resolutions.

The Phoenix Area Alumni
Chapter has the distinction of
being the first alumni asso­ciation
to donate funds for
the establishment of a scholar­ship
fund for students at
Thunderbird. Alumnus Tom
Peterson '77, presented a
check for $1,000 from the
Phoenix chapter to Financial
Aid Officer Louise Gifford
during the Third Annual
Alumni Association Roast
held on February 21.
The funds for the scholar­ship
were collected from the
proceeds of a variety of
activities, including the local
chapter's booth at the Tbird
Balloon Races.
The scholarship will be
split over two semesters with
preference given to second­and
third-semester students
who have an alumni parent.
