~ ateway to the future from students
The year 1966 was a time when
Thunderbird students gathered at
international dinners to feast on
baked pig and to listen to the strains
ofJoseph LoPiccolo's accordion
while "wine merchants" peddled
their wares. The Prairie Dogs intramural
football team emerged victorious
and Colorgraphic Club
members shared slides and experiences
from around the globe.
Today, Class of 1966 graduates
are banding together for a different
cause - to raise funds for construction
of an entrance on Greenway
Road which will serve as the main
gateway to the campus and as the
starting point for the new perimeter
road that will loop the campus.
Consisting of a landscaped median
and large sign, the entrance will be
constructed at the current site of
the Thunderbird Management
Center building.
The idea for the project blossomed
last fall at the 20-year reunion of
the Class of 1966. On the third day
of the reunion, the proposal for the
project was announced and the first
organizational meeting was held.
Within a month, a $1,500 gift was
received from a donor, and more
than $5,000 was raised even before
the formal appeal began, including
a generous matching gift from the
Kiplinger Foundation.
Heading the Greenway Entrance
project is C. Michael Bennis, who
served as chairman of the Class of
1966's 20-year reunion. Since his
graduation from Thunderbird,
Bennis has served as coordinator
of alumni activities in Spain, Thunderbird
Founders Club member,
Annual Fund chairman, Presidents
Council member, Alumni Education
Counselor, New York phonathon
volunteer, and director of the
Thunderbird Club of New England.
"It's an excellent project;' says
Bennis. "It will greatly improve
traffic flow and safety Also, it's the
most noticeable thing we could do
as a class. It will be the first thing
you see when you arrive on campus
and the last thing you see when
you leave.
"For 1980-1981, our class donated
more money to Thunderbird than
any other graduating class. We're
asking classmates to come through
again with this same kind of spirit
and donate funds as soon as possible
so that we can rapidly complete
the project and provide safety benefits
to the schoo!:'
of the past
Others active in the entrance
project include: Lloyd Andrew
Straits, II, who served as a charter
member of the Founders Club,
member of the Presidents Council,
20-year Reunion Steering Committee
member, and member of the
Alumni Association Finance Committee;
Fred M. Smoot, who has
actively supported the Presidents
Council, the Honolulu alumni club,
and the 20-year Reunion Steering
Committee; and Jerry Rupp, former
president of the Thunderbird Peru
and Arizona Chapters, and currently
chairman of the board of the
Arizona Chapter.
"First impressions are important,
especially for people who may be
on campus only for a short time,
such as international visitors, diplo-mats,
potential students, corporate
recruiters, and businessmen;' says
Straits. "By contributing to the
Greenway Entrance project, alumni
can help create a better impression
and improve the physical stature
of a school in its 41st year."
"Hopefully, everyone can find a
way to maximize their contributions
for a successful project;'
says Smoot.
The entrance project is the
second class-sponsored project,
following in the footsteps of the
Class of 1960 Academic Mall.
"These projects are the start of a
trend;' says Bobbie Boyd, director
of Alumni Relations, "as alumni are
increasingly joining together to fund
projects that will enhance the physical
beauty of the campus.
"In the past, donors' efforts
focused primarily on strengthening
curriculum-related areas; but now,
with a strong academic core established,
they are able to help upgrade
the school's grounds and facilities,
and contribute to the visual impact
of the campus;' says Boyd. "These
projects are a way for alumni to
identify a need on campus and then
do something about it. It's a great
way for them to be involved in the
school's development, and they can
see the tangible results of their
donations and support." The Class
of 1966's current fund-raising target
for the entrance is about $65,000
over a three-year period.
For those who participate in the
Presidents Council, there is an
added bonus, as they can credit
their donation to the project and
receive dual recognition.

.......-ibrary begins a new chapter
II · 0 he addition of
" a new book ona
. . . library's book
shelf is usually a
common occurrence - done without
fanfare or recognition. However,
the Thunderbird community
recently took special note of an
addition made to the Barton K.
Yount Memorial Library when the
campus library added the 100,000th
volume to its collection. The
library was recognized for this
achievement May 22 at the Fortieth
Anniversary Pioneer Reunion held
on campus.
"Reaching this goal certainly was
a surprise to me;' said Miss Lora
Jeanne Wheeler, chief librarian.
''The School has worked hard to
continually improve the library,
but I thought it would take us
much longer to collect the number
of volumes that we have today."
A library collection of 100,000
volumes is an accomplishment when
one considers that in 1946, when
the school was founded, the library
contained only 2,664 volumes.
Because of a limited budget, several
of those volumes were borrowed
from professors' private collections.
The library was first located in
what is now the storage hangar, in
the present location of the campus
bookstore. A periodical reading
room was in the present-day office
of the ASLC student-body president
at the same location.
"When the school first opened,
General Yount would always take
visitors to look at the library;'
recalled Berger Erickson, Thunderbird
executive vice president. "He
was quite proud of the library even
though it was very small. Of course,
there really wasn't much else on
campus at that time. All the other
buildings were either barracks
or hangars:'
In addition to borrowing books
from professors to complement the
curriculum of Spanish, Portuguese,
and Latin American studies, dupli-

cate books were requested from a
variety of organizations: Hispanic
Foundation, Pan American University,
Library of Congress, New York
Public Library, and the Woodrow
Wilson Memorial Library. According
to Erickson, "With such a limited
budget, we had to try and get books
from as many different resources
as possible. We couldn't rely on
the faculty for all of the library's
books."
By 1950, the library had collected
5,900 books-and subscribed to 124
publications. During this same time
period, books that had been borrowed
from professors were either
returned or purchased by the library
uring the next
12 years, tpe
library slowly
expanded under a
limited annual book budget of
approximately $7,500, according to
Miss Wheeler. "The administration
was always supportive; it's just that
there wasn't a great deal of money
to be invested in the library;' she
said. As a result of the limited budget,
the library continued to solicit
book donations and documents from
sources throughout the world.
The library received its first
significant financial contribution
after a library memorial fund was
established to honor Dr. William
Schurz, past preSident of the
School and director of the Area
Studies Department. After his death
in 1962, alumni donated approximately
$20,000 to a memorial fund
in his honor, with the money designated
to be used for the library.
"Receiving this much money was
a tremendous boost for the library,
and enabled us to make substantial
purchases to the library'S collection;'
said Miss Wheeler, adding that "after
receiving this amount of money, it
was virtually impossible to go back
to a budget of $7,500."
The collection of books increased
to more than 22,000 by 1967. The
following year the board of directors
began to consider capital improvement
plans for the campus. 'The
board considered the construction
of a new library building to be a
top priority item for the school;'
said Erickson. "The major concern
was funding the construction."
According to Miss Wheeler, initial
funding was to be provided by a
grant from the government. "Unfortunately,
the government canceled
all library construction grants just
as we were submitting our proposal;'
she said. 'The board, however,
decided ~o go ahead and raise the
money through private donations."
Construction of the $448,734
library building was completed
September 1, 1970. Major financial
contributors included The Goodyear
Tire &. Rubber Company,
American Management Association,
alumni, and the Thunderbird board
of directors.
Dr. Ralph E. Ellsworth, director
of libraries at the University of
Colorado served as consultant prior
to the construction of the new
library. At his recommendation, a
25,000 square-foot building was
constructed that would be large
enough to hold 100,000 books. In
addition to housing the library,
10,000 square feet of the building
were allocated to Alumni and Career
Services offices where they remained
until 1977, when they moved into
their present faCility.
"The atmosphere on campus was
very exciting as the library was
being constructed;' said Miss
Wheeler. "This was the first new
construction on the campus, so it
really was a big step for the schoo!:'

which are annual statistical reports.
Approximately 54 percent of the

Library (continued)
books ordered each year are based
on recommendations from the
World Business, Modem Languages,
and International Studies departments.
The library also subscribes
to 1,015 periodicals, of which 132
are foreign publications.
Miss Wheeler described the
library today as more than just a
business library, pointing out that
approximately half of the books
are social science in nature, which
includes country studies' reports
and economic studies.
"We are continually trying to
increase the number of business
books to our collection;' said Miss
Wheeler, "but the problem is they
are so much more expensive than
the other books. Our budget just
doesn't allow us to purchase as
many as we would like to:'
To facilitate locating books or
specific information not available
in the library, three options are available:
the OCLC system for interlibrary
loans, access to the Dialog
network, or use of the Arizona
State University library.

The OCLC system allows students
to tap into 6,000 libraries throughout
the country, according to
Russell Sears, assistant librarian.
He said the average waiting time
for a book through the OCLC is
approximately two weeks.
"The Dialog network, however,
is a much quicker way to gather
information;' he said. "With Dialog,
a student can get immediate information
through a computerized
system which connects 300 data
bases from various sources." A fee
is charged to the student based on
the type of search needed.
"We are a small and very specific
library which enables us to provide
a great deal of detailed international
information;' said Miss Wheeler.
"Our strengths are in the various
business international publications
that we subscribe to, in addition to
the specific financial papers and
statistical country reports. My
personal goal is to see this be
the best international library in
the country."

:etite librarian
For 33 years the major force
behind the growth and success of
the Barton K. Yount Memorial
Library on the Thunderbird campus
has been Miss Lora Jeanne Wheeler,
chief librarian since 1953.
Miss Wheeler, a petite, modest
woman, is often hesitant to discuss
her accomplishments at Thunder-bird;
but one only has to trace the
history of the library to see that
she has made a powerful imprint
on the Thunderbird community.
She admits that the library has
changed drastically since she first
arrived, but she gives most of the
credit to the support she has
received from the administration.
From the very beginning the
administration worked closely with
her to improve the library. "I
remember Dr. Carl Sauer (president
1953 - 1966) helping me make
homemade binders for magazines
and books, because the School
couldn't afford to have someone
else do the job;' she recalls.
"When I first arrived at the
School, I don't think I would have
stayed ifI hadn't already signed my
contract;' she admits. ''The condi-tion
of the library - which consisted
of homemade bookshelves, few sup-plies
and no room for storage - cer-tainly
wasn't what I was expecting.
However, the condition presented a
lot of challenges that a librarian
would never find at other libraries.
"After getting through the first
year, I enjoyed the challenges of
the library, so I just decided to stay
on. Of course I had no idea I would
be here this long;' she says.
Miss Wheeler's experience prior
to her arrival at Thunderbird
included eight years as reference
and circulation librarian for the
University of Utah, where she
received her bachelor of arts in
education. She also holds a bachelor
of science degree in library sciences
from Columbia University.
"The transition to a small library
was difficult for me at first, but I
eventually got used to the fact that
tackles gargantuan task

the library at Thunderbird was not
going to be like major university
libraries;' she says. "The challenges
provided by such a small library
tipped th.e scale for me. In addition,
working at a smaller library provided
a great deal of diversification,
which for me is one of the joys of
personal life. For the past 15 years
she has pursued a ballroom dancing
hobby which has taken her to competitions
throughout the United
States and internationally.
To stay in shape for the semiannual
competitions, she says that
she rehearses two or three nights
a smaller library."
Diversification is something that
Miss Wheeler also carries into her
a week. Commitment to her hobby
paid off last spring when she
received third place at a competition
in Las Vegas.
"I've always been more of an
intellect and have depended so
much on my mind;' says Miss
Wheeler. "The dancing has been a
real challenge for me:'
Miss Wheeler also has excelled
with her intellectual capabilities.
In 1969 her book, entitled International
Business and Foreign TradeA
Guide to Information Sources, was
published. The 221-page book provides
a bibliography and short
summary of publications and books
that have a connection with international
business.
Miss Wheeler says that the threeyear
project was like an albatross.
"It seemed like I could never take
a night off without feeling guilty
because I wasn't working on it. I
guess it was much like school. When
I finally saw the book in print, it
was quite a thrill. Several of the students
on the campus purchased
the book and then asked me for an
autograph. I was very flattered :'
In addition to writing her own
book, Miss Wheeler also compiled
the bibliography for the International
Trade Handbook, which is used at
various schools that teach courses
relating to international business.
Back at the Barton K. Yount
Memorial Library today, Miss
Wheeler's preference for diversification
is evident in her working
style as she manages a staff of 24,
including 18 work-study students.
"Miss Wheeler has been an
extremely dedicated librarian and
has always pushed for the improvement
and expansion of the library;'
according to Dr. Berger Erickson.
"She's always dug right in and
worked to achieve her goals."
"My job is almost like having
several different jobs without having
to move;' concludes Miss Wheeler.
She attributes this belief to the
diversity of her work and to the
growth of the library that she has
helped develop.
