Five prominent alumni
captured the attention and
admiration of the Thunderbird
community when they were
named the recipients of the
1987 Thunderbird Alumni
Association Distinguished
Alumni Awards. The wi.nners,
recognized for their professional
leadership, service and achieve­ment,
were honored before an
audience of 165 people at the
Spring Banquet on March 3.
• Timothy McGinnis '68, senior
vice president, The Chase
Manhattan Bank, N.A. , New York,
received the award for Banking
and Finance. Throughout a 20-
year international banking career
wi.th Chase Manhattan, McGinnis
has successfully served in a
variety of positions including
country manager for Japan and
area institute manager for Asia.
Since 1986, McGinnis has
been the regional banking
executive responsible for
management of four banks
acquired by Chase wi.thin the
past two years. In December,
McGinnis also received
Thunderbird's Jonas B. Mayer
Distinguished Alumnus Award,
the highest honor given to an
alumnus by the School.
• Robert W Feagles '51 , retired
chairman and chief executive
officer, Travelers Asset Manage­ment
International Corporation
(TAMIC), received the award for
Business and Industry. Feagles
joined Travelers in 1976 as
senior vice president of personnel
administration. He previously
served as chief personnel officer
at Citibank, N.A. , New York,
where he began his career in
1951.
In September 1987, the
National Alliance of Business
named Feagles the Business
Volunteer of the Year for
leadership in helping to solve
the nation's unemployment
problems.

The award for Entrepreneur-ship
was presented to F. Francis
Najafi '77. Najafi is founder and
president of the Pivotal Group
of Phoenix, a highly successful
land development company.
Najafi's firm is devoted to
acqu'iring raw land and subse­quently
improving it, through
zoning and the creation of a
master plan.
Timothy McGinnis '68 accepts the
award for Banking and Finance.
F. Francis Najafi '77 receives the

Peter]. Reitz '62, the secretary
general of CARE International,
received the award for Public
Service. Reitz is one of CARE's
principal spokespersons and
serves as the organization's
official representative before the
United Nations.
Reitz said he believes he owes
much of his success to his
Thunderbird experience. "We
all know that the learning
process continues beyond the
classroom, but it is in the
classroom that one learns how
to think," he said.
Reitz recently helped negotiate
the basic country agreement
between CARE and the People's
Republic of China, which will
allow CARE to develop programs
in this country. During his 25
years with CARE, Reitz has
helped establish national CARE
offices in seven countries and
has served as director of
CARE-Europe.

Stephen F Hall '69, president
of Food Marketing International
Inc. and current chairman of
the Thunderbird Alumni Asso­ciation,
was honored for his
service to Thunderbird. Hall is
the founder and past president
of the Thunderbird Club of
New England and has partici­pated
in numerous M.B.A.
forums on behalf of the School.
In his dedication to Thunder­bird,
Hall chaired the 1986
Alumni Leaders' Conference
and the 1985-86 Annual Fund.
He has b(,:en a speaker at the
Thunderbird Agribusiness
Conference and a participant in
the entrepreneurial forum.
An alumni educational
counselor for over 10 years, Hall
is also a member of the Board of
Trustees and the President's
Council. He has served on
several Thunderbird Alumni
Association committees, and is
a director and past president of
the alumni association.

students' financial needs under the G.!.
Bill. Today, 15 years later, Winterim is
an intensive, three-week program
designed to give students a first-hand
look inside the corporate walls.
This January, 440 students and 93
guest lecturers from major corporations
around the world gathered on campus
to share ideas. Among the impressive
list of speakers were 17 returning alumni
who took time out to share their
knowledge and experience with current
students. They participated in five
seminars offered through the Depart­ment
of World Business.
Johnson &: Higgins has supported
the Winterim insurance seminar for
the past five years under the leadership
of Professor John O'Connell. Students
interested in an insurance career listened
to executives address such topics as
loss control, safety, and prevention, as
well as reinsurance, the financial backing
behind the scenes. These speakers
included five returning alumni.
Dr. PaulJohnson coordinated the
Corporate Executive Officers seminar
this year. Participating lecturers looked
at the effects of the devaluation of the
American dollar on U. S. trade. Alumni
from Goodyear International, Merck
International, and Teledyne gave students
their insight into this issue.

coordinated by Visiting Professor Frank
Horwitz, an independent consultant
who was formerly with General Electric
as Manager, Trade Programs.
The International Banking seminar,
headed by Professor James Mills, was
well represented by six returning Tbirds.
They lectured on issues ranging from
product development in financial
institutions to corporate image in the
marketplace.
Procter & Gamble, under the
direction of Kingston Fletcher, provides
the experienced executives to speak at
the Consumer Marketing seminar each
year. Procter & Gamble employs 23
Tbirds worldwide and an alumnus
working in Mexico entered the class­room
to share her views on brand
management.

WHO SERVES
On March 4, 1988, a ceremony took
place on campus dedicating the William
Voris Hall of Modem Languages. George
F Getz,jr., gave a gift of $400,000 to
complete the funding for the modem
languages faculty building and requested
that it be named after Dr. William Voris
who has served as preSident and chief
executive officer ofThunderbird for
17 years.
Over 100 people took part in the
dedication ceremony and the luncheon
in the Pavilion preceding the event. As
usual, skies were sunny, temperat:uu:re:s~L;;;~
were balmy, and _
strolling violinists
added even more
charm to the day's
activities.
Mr. Getz is chairman
and chief executive
officer of the Globe
Corporation, a family­owned
conglomerate
with diverse holdings
in ranches, farms,
financial institutions,
real estate, and
other investments.
He has been a
member of the
Thunderbird Board of
Trustees since 1972.

ARTHUR TO RETIRE
john james Arthur, Dean of Admis­sions
and Registrar, recently announced
his retirement effective the end of
December 1988.
Arthur joined the Thunderbird staff
as Director of Public Relations in 1968
and has served in a variety of positions,
including Director of College Relations
and Registrar. He has held his present
position since 1982.
A graduate of Thunderbird, Arthur
received a bachelor of Foreign Trade
degree in 1957 and a Master ofInter­national
Management in 1970.
During his tenure at Thunderbird,
enrollment has grown from 487 students
to the current enrollment of 1,083. The
number of foreign students has increased
from 11 percent in 1968 to 27 percent
in 1988.
~ Barbara Olson joins Thunderbird as
the new Director of Internships. She
holds a degree in business admi­nistration
and education from the
University of Montana and was
formerly director of their cooperative
education internship program.
Thunderbird has approximately 25
internships filled for the summer
semester.
PHONATHONS
Many thanks to all the Tbirds con­tacted
during the recent phonathons.
The 1988 campus phonathon held in
january raised $61,156 in pledges.
Eighteen student volunteers placed 660
telephone calls to alumni throughout
the U.S. over a three-week period.
Each night during the first week in
March, 67 student and administrative
volunteers placed telephone calls to
U.S. alumni asking for contributions to
support a new scholarship established
by the Development Office. A total of
$6,310 was pledged for scholarships
targeted to students possessing high
leadership qualities, participation in
extracurricular activities, and solid
academic background. The scholarships
will be awarded in all three semesters
and recipients will devote work-study
time to the Development Office. The
phonathon was organized by the student
Thunderbird Development Committee.
Brad leech, Thunderbird's new
Coordinator of Development Services,
joined 21 enthusiastic New York alumni
in a phonathon held at Continental
Grain headquarters in New York City.
The group raised $ 7, 786 in pledges.

PLACEMENT
SERVICES
Thunderbird alumni are increasing
use of the Alumni Placement Service,
according to Kathryn Vegso , Director of
Career Services.
The Alumni Placement Service features
computerized matching that is provided
in cooperation with management
recruiters seeking personnel for multi­national
businesses.
The number of alumni users increased
18 percent to 308 in fall 1987. Descrip­tions
for 116 positions were received
from companies and search firms in fall
1987. A total of 1,137 resumes were
referred to companies and search firms ,
an increase of 75 percent from 648 in
1986.
The Career Services Center has
initiated publication of The Graduate
Update. This bimonthly service provides
summaries of current position openings
posted in the Career Services Center
and is offered to graduates for a period
of three months after graduation.

Approximately 30 World Business
Advisory Council members attended
classes, participated in a round-table
discussion and dined with students
during their annual spring meeting on
campus.
The round table gave students an
opportunity to hear council members
speak about their international
experiences and to learn what members
as executives, are looking for in '
Thunderbird graduates.
The follOwing day committee meetings
were held. The Curriculum Committee
chaired by Marvin Berenblum, discussed
the proposed changes in curriculum.
The Student Committee, subchaired by
Mike Boyatt '60, talked about marketing
the School. Ross Crawford chaired the
Career Services Committee which
addressed internships and company
recruiting.

JOINS JAPAN WEEK
IN PHOENIX
During February, the City of Phoenix
sponsored Japan Week to raise busi­ness
and cultural awareness between
Japan and Phoenix. As part of this event,
Thunderbird Professors Martin Sours
and John Frankenstein participated in
a conference on East Asian Investment
in Arizona's Future. The School also
co-hosted a business symposium,
"Phoenix Meets Tokyo: How To Do
Business With Japan," attended by 400
people. Dr. William Voris School pres­Ident,
was a featured speaker. Partici­pants
enjoyed a reception on campus
following the symposium. Thunderbird
received numerous follow-up inquiries
~fter the event. 'The School emerged
mstantly as a repository of information
on Japan," says Dr. Sours.

The Arizona Bank has donated
$13,000 to the School. Don Tostenrud
chairman, Arizona Bank, heads the '
Development Committee of the Board
of Trustees which provides the School's
Development Office with guidance and
advice in its fund-raiSing endeavors.
Don Lindner, senior vice president,
Arizona Bank, is a member of the
World Business Advisory Council.
Gifts designated for the Faculty Center
include $10,000 from the Margaret T
Morris Foundation, and $10,000 of a
$30,000 pledge from MeraBank. Mark
Metzinger, senior vice preSident of
MeraBank, is also a member of the
World Business Advisory Council.
Tenneco recently donated $10,000
to Thunderbird. Allen McInnes
executive vice president ofTenn~co, is
chairman of the World Business Advisory
Council.
Johnson &: Higgins made a pledge of
$75,000 to be used for needy students
who are insurance students in at least
their second semester. The Scholarship
Committee, which includes Professor
John O'Connell, will review applications
for the scholarships. Ken Seward '57,
senior vice president and director, is a
member of the Thunderbird Board of
Trustees. George Rainoff '55, senior
vice president, is a member of the
World Business Advisory Council.

FACUITYIN
THE NEWS
Drs. Marshall Geer, \\knlee Ting, and
John Frankenstein represented
Thunderbird at the founding meeting
of the International Consortium for
Pacific-Asian Management Education
and Research, held in January at the
Pacific-Asian Management Institute,
University of Hawaii, Honolulu.
Frankenstein was elected one of two
North American representatives to the
consortium's steering committee.
The consortium meeting was held
prior to the First International Sym­posium
on Pacific-Asian Business, also
sponsored by PAM!. Ting gave a paper
on laiwan venture capital opportunities
in the U.S. Frankenstein gave a paper
co-au tho red by Professor Hassan Hosseini,
on "Getting Ready for East Asia."
The ColumbiaJournal ofWJrldBusiness
notified Dr. Frankenstein that his article,
"Decision -Making In the Chinese Foreign
Trade Administration: A Preliminary
Survey," has been accepted for
publication.
Dr. Dorothy Riddle was invited by the
Centre for Applied Studies in Inter­national
Negotiations, Geneva, to provide
training for Mexican negotiators at the
GAIT on services trade issues. She also
lectured for a week at the World Institute
of Economics of the Hungarian Academy
of Sciences in Budapest on services in
economic development.
DuringJanuary, Dr. Riddle was a
visiting professor at the Helsinki School
of Economics, Finland, where she taught
a three-week course on "Marketing
International Service Operations," in
the international MBA program. She
also attended a round table in Japan on
international service trade issues and
gave lectures on services at Karlstad
University in Sweden.
Dr. Robert]. McMahon has a new
book published, Bank Marketing Plan: A
WJrkbook for Preparing !bur Bank's Annual
Marketing Plan. It is available through
the Bank Administration Institute.
Professor Robert Ramsey and D. R.
Belisle, vice president for employer
relations, were notified that their paper,
"ESL For MBA Students Via the Job
Search," was accepted for inclusion in
the 1988 annual convention ofTeachers
of English to Speakers. of Other
Languages.

of Latin American Studies meeting held
in San Diego. Dr. Humberto Valencia,

a competitive environment as I have

coming year. Dr. John Conklin presented
a paper, '1\pproaches to Multi­Disciplinary
Teaching: The Thunderbird
Model," and served as discussant on
the panel, "Debt Problems and Debt­Equity
Swaps."

INSURANCE
ENDOWMENT
Thunderbird's first endowed chair,
The C. V Starr Chair ofInternational
Insurance, was inaugurated at com­mencement
ceremonies in May 1984.
Professor John O'Connell was the
recipient. While Maurice Greenberg,
president, American International Group,
was on campus to endow the chair,
Professor O'Connell asked him what he
wished to see happen. "Let people
know that insurance is an interesting
and rewarding career to get into," said
Greenberg.
His wish has seen fruition. Due to
the substantial financial contributions
of the C. V Starr Foundation,
Thunderbird's insurance program has
become one of the most popular subject
concentrations in the last few years.
Over 900 students have enrolled in
insurance classes from spring 1985
through Winterim 1988.
The Starr Foundation, incorporated
with funds donated by the founder of
AIG, has been the channel of AIG's
financial support to Thunderbird. The
foundation recently donated $310,000,
completing the endowment of the chair
at $750,000. AIG currently has 32
Thunderbirds working for them.
For Professor O'Connell, the fully
endowed chair means he will be assured
of an ongoing program and he will be
able to attend more international
meetings to increase the awareness of
Thunderbird's program worldwide.

A BENEFACTOR FOR
ENTREPRENEURIAL
STUDIES
J. Michael O'Shaughnessy '71
announced he will fund a grant to
begin an Entrepreneurial Studies Program
at Thunderbird under the direction of
Dr. Paul Johnson. The announcement
was made during the Spring Banquet in
March.
The grant will be $25,000 per year
for the next 10 years. O'Shaughnessy
has also offered to establish a challenge
grant which he will match dollar for
dollar up to $25,000 to be put into an
endowment fund.
"In my years of living abroad, I met
many men who were floundering because
they lost a job with a big company and
did not know how to direct their efforts
to a company of their own," says
O'Shaughnessy. 'l\lso, we need a better
understanding of how to encourage
people abroad to live better by using
the tools of capital formation."

FORANEW
PRESIDENT
We need your help. About a year ago,
it was known that Dr. William Voris
would step down as president of
Thunderbird shortly after reaching
retirement age in 1989.
In order to get a head start on
searching for a successor, the board of
trustees initiated a search for a person
that would be the chief operating officer
(chancellor) of the School, reporting to
the president. The board hoped to find
a candidate who would become presi­dent
upon Dr. Voris's retirement.
Finding someone to meet the
demanding qualifications of the job
proved to be challenging, and the
search for a chancellor slowed, pending
a formal announcement of Dr Voris's
retirement date.
That announcement came on March
4 and a new search committee was
named, this time with the task of
searching for a person to step directly
into the president's position.
This is where you come in. The
Thunderbird will guide the future of
the institution and will have great
influence on the continued value of
your degree. The requirements are high,
but the search committee is convinced
the right person can be located.
Candidates will be considered on
their overall strength and appropriate
balance and combination of the follOwing
qualifications.
1. A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in
business administration, economics,
modem languages or international
studies.

LEBANESE
AMBASSADOR
SPEAKS OUT
Abdallah Bouhabib, the Lebanese
Ambassador to the U.S., told an audience
of over 250 people at Thunderbird that
both Lebanon and external powers
must accept the blame for the continued
conflict in the country and surrounding
region.
Bouhabib, ambassador to the United
States since 1983, stated that Lebanon
and the international community must
work together to overcome the crisis in
, the Middle East. He also said that,
while United States foreign policy toward
Lebanon is well intentioned, it must be
re-examined.
NCR awarded Andres Jaffe, a student
from Venezuela, the first Award of
Excellence. The new program selects
a recipient based on leadership,
potential, and academic excellence.
The interviewers were impressed with
Jaffe's persistence and perseverance
in pursuing his degree despite family
responsibilities.
DIPLOMAT IN
RESIDENCE
Dr. Daniel A. Chaij of the Department
of State's Agency for International
Development was the International
Studies Department's Diplomat in
Residence during February.
While on campus, Chaij presented a
colloquium to the Thunderbird com­munity
The program, "Central America:
The Answers Are Still Elusive," outlined
foreign policy history and the rationale
for providing U.S. aid to Central America.
His message both contrasted the suc­cesses
of development assistance to EI
Salvador and Costa Rica, and reviewed
the political problems in Nicaragua.
"I know for a fact that there is a lot of
deep-seated empathy in America for
Lebanon. But the problem is that those
feelings do not often translate into
practical steps from the international
community to restore stability to
Lebanon," Bouhabib said.

positive attitude, emerging from the
conflict in Lebanon, is Signaling progress.
"There is a realization in Lebanon
today that no single group can eliminate
the other and no external power can
digest Lebanon, even if able to swallow
it ," Bouhabib said.
Bouhabib concluded by urging the
Thunderbird audience and all citizens
of the world to aid in the resolution of
the Lebanese conflict.
"We've got to realize that people are
different and there's nothing wrong
with being different. But we've got to
know how to live with each other. If we
do that, we can really live with each
other," he said.
Before assuming his current position
as ambassador, Bouhabib was employed
for seven years with the World Bank.
Bouhabib holds bachelor's and master's
degrees in economics from the American
University in Beirut. He also earned a
doctorate at Vanderbilt University in
1975.
Bouhabib's visit to campus was
sponsored by the School's Middle East
Club and ASLC.

Thirteen Thunderbird Alumni
Association Board of Director members
gathered on campus in early March to
formulate plans for creating a stronger
link between the association and chapters
around the world. Stephen F Hall '69,
chairman, presided over the meeting.
Eric Denniston '80 chairs the Chapter
Development Committee and is
coordinating board members' efforts to
initiate an Adopt A Chapter program
deSigned to establish contact and follow
through with alumni organizations
worldwide.
The program will allow the association
to communicate more effectively to the
chapters what resources the association
can provide to help existing chapter
leaders efforts. It will also give chapters
the opportunity to communicate their
needs to the association.
In other action, the follOwing Tbirds
were appointed to serve as vice presidents
with terms commencing March 5, 1988:

first Asian Thunderbird
Reunion in Bangkok, Thailand.
The event began with a lavish
Thai buffet dinner Friday
evening at the Dusit Thani
Hotel during which Tom Seale,
President of the American
Chamber of Commerce in
Thailand, was honored for his
years of support and service
on behalf of Thunderbird.
Although he is not an alumnus,
Seale has been a strong Tbird
supporter as an Alumni

opening dinner of the first Asian
alumni reunion in Bangkok, Thailand.
Rooney cautioned against American
protectionist policies, but said, "The
success of existing companies can

can do business, and Thailand is a
profitable place to do business. "

The Arizona chapter of the
Thunderbird Alumni Association
had a busy winter beginning
with ThunderGames on campus.
Sponsored by the Student
Alumni Committee and ASLC,
the day was filled with soccer,
volleyball, softball, and basket­ball.
Evening activities included
hay rides, food, and square
dancing.
Thunderbird was also the
scene for the fourth annual roast
and membership meeting. A
Norwegian smorgasbord and
roast of Charles Mannel, vice
president for external affairs,
began the evening, followed by
election of board members and
a dance, with a Dj providing
the music.
The 1988-89 Phoenix board
of directors includes Deborah
Haas '79, chairperson; Ken
Nelson '54, president; Carmo
Fernandez '70, first vice presi­dent;
Donald Parker '82, second
vice president; Astrid Hanson
'85, treasurer; and Susie Griffin
'83, secretary.
Former chairperson, jerry
Rupp '66 presented a check for
$1,000 from the Phoenix chapter
to Bobbie Boyd, director of
alumni relations, during the
roast. The money is used to fund
partial graduate assistantships
for two students to work five
hours per week in the Alumni
Relations office. Robert Kile '87
was the first recipient and
William johnson '88 was selected
to work in the alumni office
during the spring semester. He
is a graduate of the University
of Arizona.

5:30 p.m. This is a new date to
avoid conflict with Orange
County First Thursday, at Maxie's

San Francisco Bay Area
San Francisco T'birds will
enjoy career seminars and other
new programs in 1988 due to
successful chapter fund-raising
activities in 1987. Chris johnson
'86 is in charge of seminar
arrangements, which will feature
professional testing and
Thunderbird Career Services
participation.
Other new programs include
plans for a telephone hotline
with newsletter updates, career
and personal classifieds, and
event information; and a post
office box for RSVPs, inquir­ies,
etc.
On the social side, the roving
dinner in February celebrated
the Chinese New Year, the Year
of the Rat, at Ming's Palace with
host Billy Chang '86. Laurie and
Dan Popovitch '84 hosted an
Italian dinner at Sorrento's
in March.
First Tuesday in San Francisco
now meets at La Fuente,
Embarcadero Two, beginning at

Third Tuesday for South Bay
and Peninsula T'birds has
moved to the Tide House Cafe

Mountain View.
The annual student/alumni rugby
game was held the first Saturday in
March with 24 alumni returning to
challenge the students and win by a
score of /6-/ O. After the men's game,
the Kachina Dolls played the alumnae
with the women's student team
pulling ahead, 10-8. Alumni ruggers
should keep the first weekend in
March open for this annual event.
