FALL

TERRANCE G. LEONHARDY
Diplomat-in-Residence
• •
THE THUNDERBIRD (alumni publication
of the Thunderbird Graduate
School of International Management)
is published in the Fall, Spring and
Summer of each year.
EDITOR: Martha L. Snyder
COVER:
TERRANCE G. LEONHARDY,
Di ploma t-in-Residence.
(story on page 2.)
This has been an exciting year for the Thunderbird Graduate School. There have been
feature stories on the School from the Los Angeles Times news service, the United Press International,
the Financial Executive, the Journal of Commerce, Industry Week, the Journal of
Administrative Science, various McGraw Hill outlets overseas, and others. These articles have,
in general, praised the School and its mission. As a result of this publicity, plus the fine effort
by you alumni and our student-staff-faculty recruiters, enrollment at the School increased by
one-third in one year's time - from approximately 670 students to about 870. For the first
time, applications were cut off in August. Currently we are carefully weighing the surge of
applications being received for February 1974 in order to continue upgrading the standards of
admission to the School. There are 135 international students from 44 countries now enrolled.
Most impressive has been the increase in numbers of students from the Far East; namely Japan,
Korea, Hong Kong and The Republic of China.
It is not anticipated that we will let the School grow any larger. We hope to maintain
an ,average of 750 students on a year-round basis from now on. If applications and inquiries
keep increasing as they have over the past two years, we will be able to maintain higher
standards of admissions. This will make our screening role for the multinational corporations
even more effective.
We hope this will result, in the long run, in a substantial increase in corporate financial
support for the School. Unfortunately 85 to 90 percent of our income still comes from student
tuition. Multinational corporations are evidencing interest in our program and are recruiting
on the campus in everincreasing numbers. But we are yet to achieve what I would consider
substantial financial support from our corporate friends.
During the summer months the kitchen was modernized with new stoves, new ovens,
a new tile floor, new refrigerators and several other labor-saving pieces of equipment. It is
imperative now that the renovation of the dining hall be completed as soon as possible. As
you know, we are seeking $83,000 from the alumni in order to accomplish this project. We now
have over 8,000 alumni around the world in over 100 foreign countries. We hope it will be
possible for us to show a substantial increase in the financial support of our long-time friends
and supporters. Won't you please return your pledge card immediately?
You can all be very proud of Thunderbird's record during the 27 years of its existence.
The multinational corporations are virtually unanimous in their praise of you Thunderbirds who
are performing so ably around the world. We are doing our best to keep the School up-to-date
and to provide the kind of education necessary for the ever-changing international climate. In
the past two years we have had to increase the emphasis on the newer concepts in economics,
finance, accounting and marketing. It is evident that the international world of economics and
finance is changing rapidly, and we as a School must be on the frontier of this movement. Representatives
of these companies tell me our graduates compare favorably with the graduates of
any other institution in the world. This makes all of us at Thunderbird very proud, and I'm sure
you feel the same way.
William Voris
President
• fORMER U. S. CONSUL .. GENERAL IS
DIPLOMAT .. IN .. RESIDENCE AT THUNDERBIRD
Former U.S. Consul-General Terrance G. Leonhardy, who was held under
threat of death by Mexican Terrorists for four days in May, will spend the 1973-74
school year as a diplomat-in-residence at Thunderbird.
Appointment of the diplomat is a part of a program by which the State Department
assigns selected veteran diplomats to schools and universities for a year.
Leonhardy was released unharmed after the Mexican government met his
kidnapers' demands to free 30 leftwing prisoners and fly them to Cuba. Seized by
three terrorist gunmen on a Guadalajara street, he was the first foreign diplomat to
be kidnaped in Mexico. He was unharmed despite four days' detention, during
which time his execution was threatened frequently.
Mrs. Leonhardy, a former vice-consul in Nogales, Sonora, helped arrange a
bank loan to pay ransom, which the kidnapers demanded in addition to the release
of so-called political prisoners from Mexican jails.
Those released from Mexican prisons were accused of bank robberies and other
crimes believed linked to left-wing political movements in opposition to the government
of President Luis Echeverria and his predecessors.
A 31-year veteran with the Department of State, Leonhardy served as consul
in Nogales and Mexico City, in addition to assignments in Spain, Colombia, El
Salvador and Denmark, and in the Department of State in Washington.
Among his many awards are a Certificate of Appreciation, awarded by the
Governors of Arizona and Sonora; Certificate of Appreciation, awarded by the
Municipal Council of Nogales, Sonora; Meritorious Service Award from the Department
of State, and the Order of "Gran Oficial" by the Government of El Salvador.
Mr. Leonhardy and his wife, Leona, and their two daughters, reside on the
Thunderbird campus.
TRAVELS OF THE PRESIDENT
President William Voris recently returned
from visiting the heads of six

a luncheon with Charles Pilliod, President
of Goodyear; Richard Riley, President
of Firestone; Gerald O'Neil, President
of General Tire; and O. P. Thomas,
President of B. F. Goodrich. Each of
the above are thoroughly familiar with
Thunderbird and were quite receptive
to his efforts.
Mr. Pilliod, who will coordinate fund

also arranged a dinner for President
Voris with Mr. Russel DeYoung, Chairman
of the Board of Goodyear; Dr. Olds,
President of Kent State University; the
President of the University of Akron,
and other administrators of the two
schools. The purpose of this meeting
was primarily to help recruit students.
During the same trip, President Voris
met with Mr. John Montag, President
of Caterpillar International Division,
and Mr. C. William Verity, Chairman
of the Board for Armco Steel. Both
companies have agreed to make five
year financial pledges to Thunderbird.

FNCB EXECUTIVE AD.,."..,,, .. ,..,,, AUGUST CLASS
Carlton M. Stewart, Senior Vice President of 1he First National City Bank of
New York, spoke to the summer graduating class at Thunderbird. Mr. Stewart
heads the South Asia, Middle East and African Division of the bank's international
banking group.
A native of Chicago, he attended Stanford and Harvard Universities before
entering the U.S. Army in 1943. After World War II service, he returned to Harvard
and in 1947 received a master's degree in business administration.
He joined FNCB as a trainee in 1947 and for the next twelve years served in
the bank's Hong Kong, Tokyo, Bombay, Singapore and Manila branches. He assumed
his present responsibilities in March 1969.
He is a member of the Asia Society and a director of the Far-East American
Council of Commerce and Industry.
In addressing the graduates he said "that economic prosperity for one nation
depends directly on the economic security of all."
"There is more to be gained (by nations) by reconciling divergent interests
than by pounding one another over the head with them. Countries, including our own,
that once kept domestic and international matters rigidly separated, now find themselves
forced to discuss with other nations matters once considered strictly of
national interest."
"The best example of this is the intensifying effort among industrial nations
to resolve the international monetary crisis. To bring some order oul!; of this crisis,
nations are being pressed to devise approaches that may require new international
institutions to carry them out."
He further stated that there are dramatic opportunities in trade and investment
in the Middle East and that the U.S. government has projected by 1980 this country
will have to import 35 percent of its oil from there compared to less than 5 percent
in 1970.
He said the Middle East nations will have enormous incomes and the major
challenge facing governments and international business generally is to help find
adequate and orderly investment channels worldwide for these funds.
The School's highest student honor, the Barton Kyle Yount Award, was
presented to John Crawford Howell of Woodburn, Oregon.
Excellence in Capstone Awards were given to Robert G. Ervin of Eugene,
Oregon, Randolph Miller of Warren, Ohio, Richard J. Breit of Denver, Colorado, and
Ravindra Rammiklal Vora of Bombay, India.
The Athletic Award was won by Holland Bowen Evans of Richardson, Texas.

THUNDERBIRD HOSTS
JAPANESE SEMINAR •
A seminar on American Climate for
Japanese Enterprise was held on campus
from September 12 through September
21 under the direction of Christian A.
L~rsen, Director of Special Projects and
Dr. Sabry El-Shabrawy, Professor of
World Business.
The thil'ty-five executive trainees attending
the course came from the Institute
for International Studies and
Training (IlST), Fujinomiya, Japan.
In addition to the eight Thunderbird
faculty members, the teaching staff was
augmented by Arizona State University
faculty members, Dr. Keith Davis, Professor
of Management, and Dr. Robert
L. Knox, Department of Economics. In
addition, representatives from local government
and business organizations
were on the staff.
Japan's Institute of International Studies
and Training is largely modeled
after Thunderbird as a result of a visit
to the school in 1967 by Mr. Shigeo
Horie, Chairman of the Board of the
Bank of Toyko, Ltd. Mr. Horie was
so impressed with the type of training
being provided for international careers
that he spurred a group of Japanese
businessmen and educators to
study the Thunderbird operation and
set up a similar school in Japan.
S.A.M. PLAN TO ESTABLISH
RESEARCH, FORECASTING AND
INFORMATION SERVICE
The Thunderbird Society for the Advancement
of Management, with encouragement
from the renowned author
and consultant, Robert Theobald, hope
to establish a Research, Forecasting
and Information Service. The research
and forecasting will be done at the request
of executives in business and
government for an agreed upon fee,
by individuals in credited courses of
independent study.
This service will specialize in areas
where other research and forecasting
are lacking, incomplete, misleading, or
biased. It will attempt to uncover questions
as well as answers in forecasting
possible trends in global finance, environment,
energy, law, government regulations,
etc.
Alumni will be appraised of forecasted
trends by means of a topical review to
appear as part of this publication. And
a more comprehensive trendletter and
list of available studies may be offered
depending upon demand.
Input, request or support of this service
are welcome - write T.G.S.I.M.,
S.A.M. Research and Forecasting.

SMU and THU
M.B.A.
TO HAVE JOINT
M.I.M. PROGRAM
On September 10th, 1973, the Executive CommIttee of the Thunderbird Board of
Directors approved a joint M.B.A. - M.I.M. program with Southern Methodist
University. The program provides for the exchange of credits toward obtaining one
degree as well as providing for a dual degree program. Dr. Donald Baerresen,
Thunderbird Academic Vice President, and Mr. Michael Harvey of Southern Methodist
University have worked very closely to bring the program to a reality.
In announcing the new linkage between Thunderbird and Southern Methodist
University Dr. Baerresen said:
"These programs are now beginning, and it is anticipated that many students
will be interested in availing themselves'of the special opportunities provided under
the arrangements between Thunderbird and SMU.
It is anticipated that students who are not now presently enrolled in SMU or
Thunderbird will view the dual degree program as a composite opportunity for
specializing in the core program of the Graduate School of Business at SMU first,
where they will spend two semesters and obtain 30 credit hours and then come to
Thunderbird to .augment their education with courses in language, international
studies, and upper level business courses.
The curricula of Thunderbird and SMU are complimentary, and the areas of
specialization at each institution can be used to strengthen the students overall
educational program.
At SMU fundamentals in business administration are emphasized through an
action learning process by which students are encouraged to solve live problems
under the guidance and direction of their professors.
At Thunderbird the students will obtain the basic required level of language
instruction, and receive the required background to understand the political, economic,
social, and cultural relationships in the international environments in which they
seek to work. Also at Thunderbird students will have the advantage of learning
the application of business practices and techniques under the direction of former
executives who were in charge of international operations for major corporations.
The result of this dual degree program should provide the student with a strong
background for his development as a successful international manager."
For further information on the Transfer of Credits Agreement between Thunderbird
an:! SMU direct correspondence to Dr. Donald W. Baerresen, Academic Vice
President or to Dr. Robert L. Gulick, Dean of Admissions, Thunderbird Graduate
School, Glendale, AZ 85306.
THROUGH THE COURTESY OF HOWARD PATTERSON '69, we received the above
photo taken during a recent FNCB inspection of the Calcutta, India, branch. Shown
are four members of the Asia-Pacific Inspection Team (left to right) - Don Ehrett
'72, Vince Zamis '70, Larry Edstrom '70, Howard Patterson, and Dave Ansell '68,
who was the branch operations officer at that time. He" has since been assigned to
Saudi Arabia as Manager of the Jeddah branch. Howard adds: "Dave used to grade
my papers for Paul Wilson's accounting class, and now (ho ho!) we're grading his!"
1974 WOR.LD TRADE FAIR -
1975 INTERNATIONAL AUCTION
For the past three years the International
Auction and World Trade Fair,
successfully sponsored by the Thunderbird
Women 's Club, has been one of
the highlights of the School year, and
an affair that is eagerly looked forward
to by not only the students but the
local friends of Thunderbird as well.
The Club wishes to again thank alumni
and friends who have so generously
contributed to the last t hree auctions,
however, in order not to burden them
with annual requests and to stimulate
more local interest in the World Trade
Fair, the club voted to separate the two
events by holding them on alternate
years. The World Trade Fair will be
held in the Spring of 1974, with
the International Auction following in
Spring 1975.
Alumni wishing to donate to the 1975
International Auction may send their
donations at any time during the next
year and a half. Alumni planning to
visit campus might find it more convenient
to bring their contributions with
them. Articles sent by mail should be
addressed to the Thunderbird Women's
Club, Thunderbird Campus, Glendale,
AZ 85306.
INTER-FAITH CENTER
PLANNED 'FOR
THUNDERBIRD
Inter-Faith Center plans at Thunderbird
may be near realization. The student
committee formed earlier in 1973
with administration and ASLC approval
foresees that sufficient donations may
enable construction to begin in early
1974. Additional fund raising will be
pursued for furnishings and landscaping.
The facility will be used by all religious
and philosophical groups for services,
discussions, meditations, etc., in addition
to providing a forum by which each
can gain a better understanding of the
world's religions and philosophies.
No such center presently exists on campus.
With a substantially increasing enrollment
each semester, no other facility
can be made available for this purpose.
Inquiries, suggestions and support are
welcome. Checks should be sent to
Inter-Faith Center, Box 515, Thunderbird
Graduate School, Thunderbird
Campus, Glendale, AZ 85306.

I have a great interest in helping an
individual who may find himself in
more or less the same situation r found

AUTHOR STANLEY LOOMIS '54
KILLED IN PARIS
Stanley Loomis, 50,
of Stockbridge, Massachusetts,
and
Par i s, died at
American Hospital
in Paris on December
17th as a result
of injuries received
when he was struck
by a car in the
Place de la Concorde.
A nationally known biographer and historian,
he was returning from a dinner
engagement when the accident occurred.
With him were his wife, the former
Virginia Lindsey, his twelve-year-old
son, Craig, his father, Chauncey C.
Loomis of Stockbridge, and his brother,
Chauncey, Jr., a professor of English
at Dartmouth College. The family had
ga thered in Paris for the Christmas
holidays.
Born in New York City, Stanley moved
to Stockbridge with his family at an
early age when his father became president
of the New England Lime Company
in Adams. He received his bachelor's
and master's degrees in History and
English from Columbia University, and
was graduated from Thunderbird in
February 1954.
While at graduate school, he became
fascinated with the French Revolution
and especially with Madame Du Barry,
mistress of King Louis XV. His research
resulted in a book on Madame Du Barry
in 1959, which was picked up by the
Book Find Club and received glowing
reviews.
In 1963, his book on "Paris in the
Terror: June 1793-July 1794" was a
selection of the Book of the Month Club
and was on the best-seller list. This year,
his "The Fatal Friendship" - a book
on Marie Antionette, was well received
by both critics and the public.
His works were not only admired by
professionals in the field, historians who
do not give praise easily to a nonacademic;
they also attracted the general
public, resulting in several printings
of each book and selection by the leading
U.S. book clubs. His works were
translated into several languages, and
are on the required reading lists in
college history and literature courses.
Several years ago, Stan and his wife
took up winter residence on the Rue
d'Anjou in Paris. They returned to their
Prospect Hill home at Stockbridge each
Spring in time for him to plant his
extensive flower garden and renew his
interest in art.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia,
and a son, Craig, who reside at Prospect
Hill, Stockbridge, Massachusetts 01262 ;
four stepchildren, his father and two
brothers.

FUND RAISING •
THUNDERBIRD ALUMNI FUND ESTABLISHES DIAMOND CLUB
The past three and a half months have shown a substantial rise in alumni giving. Although there have not been as
many contributions, the average size of the donations has increased. In this issue of THE THUNDERBIRD we are adding ,t
the DIAMOND CLUB to give due recognition to those alumni who have contributed $500 or more in 1973. I
The PATRICK DRIVE for Funds was instituted in October, and by this time most of you have received an appeal ,I
from Mr. James E. Patrick, Chairman of the Thunderbird Board of Directors. Proceeds from this Fund will be used along J
with the regular alumni contributions for the completion of the campus dining facilities. The kitchen underwent a face-lifting
this past summer, but we must renovate and aircondition the dining room before another Summer rolls around.
We ask that you give generously to the Alumni Fund by sending in a cash contribution, or a pledge to be honored
before the close of the fiscal year. Remember your contributions are tax-deductible, and that many of our employing companies
participate in a Gift Matching Program. If you are employed by a company or organization having such a program we ask
that you include the completed Gift Matching Form with your contribution.
PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY. You will take pride in seeing your name included with the list of donors in the next issue
of the alumni publication.

(P. Lorillard Co.); BUD JOHNSON '69
(AIG); CHRIS LARSEN, Director. of
Special Projects at ThunderbIrd;
ROGER LARSEN '72 (AIG); JERRY
SEAY '71 (AIG)
A delightful reception was held at the
Madrid home of ROGER and CONNIE
LARSEN '72 in honor of Roger's parents,
Chris and Valla Larsen, when they visited
Spain in July.
Many of the Spain alumni were on
vacation, but those who attended carried
on in true Thunderbird fashion
into the wee 'hours of the morning.
In addition to those pictured above the
following T'birds were in attendance:
BOB CACKETT '68 (AFIA), who attended
the reception but had to leave
for another engagement, J erry Seay's
parents and two brothers, Cathy Perez,
Dottie Ballestero, Georgean Johnson,
Linda Seay, Connie and Valla Larsen.
Unfortunately, we were unable to reproduce
the photo of the entire group.
The senior Larsens very much enjoyed
being with the group and reported
that they are all fine representatives
of Thunderbird, the USA, and their
respective companies.
LOS ANGELES GROUP MEET
AT VILLA TAXCO
By the time this issue of THE THUNDERBIRD
reaches its destination the
LOS ANGELES Alumni Chapter November
10th meeting will be over. At this
early date it looks as though there will
be the usual large representation. The
affair will be a dinner meeting at the
Villa Taxco Restaurant at Sunset and
Virgil. President Larry Lipsher and
his Board of Directors have made an all
out effort to assure that the Fall meeting
will be a success. One of the highlights
of the affair will be the honoring
of Professor Paul Wilson for his many
years of devoted service to Thunderbird.
Unfortunately, because of a previous
commitment he well be unable to
attend. Acting in his behalf in accepting
the Award will be Thunderbird President
Voris.
The Southern California Alumnus of
the Year award is also scheduled to be
presented at this time.
More on this in the next issue of THE
THUNDERBIRD.
LIBERIA T/BIRDS MEET
Although we have had no official report
from the Liberia Thunderbirds, CHARLEY
ST. CLAIR '56 tells us that the
area alumni met in Monrovia several
months ago. MARVIN DOLE '67 of the
Liberia Tractor & Equipment Company
in Monrovia organized the meeting and
we have written to Marv asking for
more information - hopefully, we will
have it for the next issue of the publication.
ENGLAND CHAPTER
PLAN REORGANIZATION
Plans are underway for the reorganizing
of the ENGLAND Alumni Chapter,
under the guidance of SCOTT W AKEFIELD
'66 and MIKE ADAMS '69 and
with some assistance from other area
Thunderbirds. In September, MIKE reported
that they hope to start off with
a "get acquainted" cocktail party sometime
within the next two months. England
T'birds should get in touch with
Mike at the Royal Bank of Canada, 6
Lothbury, London or with Scott at
Roulston & Company, Inc., 5 Queen
Street, Mayfair, London.
1973 FASCHING
CELEBRATION IN MUNICH
EUROPEAN THUNDERBIRDS kicked
off a festive weekend on Friday evening,
March 2nd, by warming up over drinks
at the Regina Palast Hotel in Munich.
Later they proceeded to a quaint Argentine
Steak House where a "gemutlich"
supper was served to the tune of live
Latin music. The evening was brought to
a perfect close by one Thunderbird wife
dancing on the table to even livelier
Latin music.
On Saturday the group had their usual
Hofbrau luncheon meeting with the
following Thunderbirds in attendance:
Mitch and Judi Summers '64 of Paris;
Dave and Lana Hertel '70 of St. Truiden,
Belgium; Wolf and Marie Oplesch '67 of
Paris; Peter and Nancy Pay '62 of Veley,
Switzerland; Dewey and Sharon Smith
'68 of Wolverhampton, England; Vladas
and Gail Gedmintas of Antwerp, Belgium
and Paul and Pat Reimann of
Cologne, Germany. They were joined
by John Avard '65 of Ridge Tool Company
in Elyria, Ohio, who was in Ger-many
on company business. There were
also two non-Thunderbird couples.
In addition to old and new business and
reading of the minutes there were various
reports given concerning Thunderbird
"goings-on" in different countries.
Election of officers took place with
Mitch Summers being re-elected President,
Dave Hertel as Vice President, and
Paul Reimann as Secretary-Treasurer,
along with various National Chairmen.
The Saturday evening costume ball
brought out a record-breaking attendance
- probably the largest in the
history of the Chapter. The group is
hoping for an even larger attendance
at the 1974 Fasching Celebration.

1949 BERNHARD EDGAR writes
from Lucerne, Switzerland: "My
wife and I plan to take off for
a two months' trip through England and
Scotland (one month each). Hope to
catch some prize salmon in the Scottish
Highlands and along the Royal Dee.
There is nothing like being retired at a
youthful age. I have had seven years
of it and can take a lot more. I am not
idle, though, quite the contrary. Margot
and I plan to visit Thunderbird in January
or February. We want to spend
about three weeks in Arizona." . . .
LLOYD CLARK, formerly of Prescott
and now living in Bisbee, has been
selected as the first regional administrator

beauty of the country, the friendly people
and the low cost of living in Costa

successful business ventures, offers all
ski and vacation minded Thunderbirds
the hospitality (at reasonable rates, of
course) of his latest acquisitions - THE
GENERAL PALMER HOUSE and THE
GRANDE PALACE hotels in Durango,
Colorado.
Situated in the heart of the ski country
and just forty miles from PUrgatory -
a skier's utopia, Duyango offers a.
glimpse into the historic past. Surrounded
by the spectacular peaks of the
San 'Juan National Forests, warmed by
the southwestern sun, the region is
blessed with a natural snow belt that
produced over 450 inches of snow during
the 1972-73 ski season.
12
The General Palmer House and The
Grande Palace hotels combine the informal
with authentic Victorian and
with a friendly atmosphere amid the
plush decor of the 1880's. Every modern
comfort is at hand - drive-in convenience,
ample parking, family accommodations,
television, dining, telephones,
air conditioning, transportation to and
from the Purgatory ski lifts, etc.
Rio Grande-land is the pioneer business
section of Durango adjacent to the
classic Rio Grande Railroad Depot,
which has been restored and modernized
as a living memorial to early-day railroading.
The old Silverton Train, the
last of the West's narrow guage railroad
pioneers, is in daily operation from
June through September between Durango
and Silverton, Colorado.
If you plan to spend your next vacation
with Dan at one of the two hotels we
advise you to make your reservations
