Sensitivity to the changing environment-
it is a vital part of any organization's
success and positive growth.
And members of Thunderbird's World
Business and International Studies
departments have demonstrated this
sensitivity by instituting curriculum
reforms that will become effective
in the fall semester, 1989,
The most significant alteration
in the World Business curriculum
includes the division of the currently
required advanced managerial finance
course into two courses: at the introductory
and advanced levels. The
reform of the International Studies
curriculum involves the addition of
an entirely new course entitled,
"Fundamentals of Business Environment."
According to Clifton B. Cox,
the chairman of the Department of
World Business, the introductory
finance course, Fundamentals of Managerial
Finance, will be added to the
World Business foundation core
courses. ':A.dvanced Managerial Finance"
will be offered as an elective. The new
curriculum is designed to give students
more options with their Thunderbird
career,
':A. student with an interest in finance
may now take the second level finance
course rather than advanced marketing.
And, likewise, the marketing student
may opt to sign up for the more
challenging marketing class rather than
the advanced finance course:' Cox
said.
CURRICULUM
Professor Joaquim Duarte. chair of
the International Studies Department,
gives his students insight into
the cultural, political, and business
dimensions of contemporary Brazil.
Another course change planned for
the fall, 1989, includes replacing the
current intermediate level International
Investments course with a more
advanced, limited-enrollment seminar
on the same subject. An entirely new
course which may be added to the
upcoming 1989 Winterim session is
Marketing to Hispanics.
The reform of the International
Studies curriculum is deSigned not
only to give a more definite structure
__ ~ - -'"77",

PACE
to this department but also to support
and complement the educational
objectives of both the World Business
and Modem languages departments.
According to International Studies
professor, Andris Trapans, "The role
and mission of the International Studies
Department is to back up and sustain
the World Business Department's
training in theory and practice of
international management, as well as
to provide a cultural context for the
languages taught in the Modern
languages Department.
"The International Studies Department
provides the glue which binds
together all three departments;' Trapans
said.
The new Fundamentals of Business
Environment course, which will be
taught at the introductory level, is the
result of an evolutionary process which
has been taking place within the
department, said Professor Joaquim.
M. Duarte,]r. , who has been chairman
of the International Studies department
for the past 20 years.
'The need for this core course has
become increasingly clear and pressing,
as the profile of our entering student
population has changed away from
the social sciences and the humanities
and more toward business;' Duarte
said.
"In the present advanced International
Studies classes, we cannot
assume the students understand basic
Clifton Cox, chair, Department of
World Business
ideas such as how the United Nations
operates or the difference between
authoritarian and totalitarian governments,
for example;' Duarte said. "This
introductory core course will provide
students with this fundamental knowledge
and allow professors of more
advanced courses to make some concrete
assumptions about students'
knowledge;' he added.
Beginning with the fall semester of
1989, students will be given the
International Studies Advanced Placement
CISAP) exam to determine
whether they may be exempt from
taking the introductory course.
professors lTapans, John C. Conklin
and Beverly Springer have been testing
students since Winterim 1988 to
determine what passing score will be
required to waive the class.
The bottom line of the curricula
changes of both departments is the
hope that they will produce betterprepared
and more knowledgeable
Thunderbird graduates. Associate
Professor of International Studies, John
Frankenstein, may have summarized
this notion best when he described
the mission of the International Studies
Department: 'The curriculum is
designed to facilitate understanding of
and adaptation to foreign environments
so that the international manager might
focus upon succeeding rather than
just surviving or coping."

and Thailand, all of which have
Thunderbird alumni playing an active
role in the business sector .
.... rSSUES ....
I ssues diller markedly fcom country
to country in Southeast Asia. Dan
Goldsmith '65 of Indonesia regards the
top issue there as the effort to diversify
exports outside of the oil sector. "Indonesia
is the only Asian country that is
a member of OPEC, and like most of
the OPEC countries, it has relied too
heavily on oil for income:' he says.
"However, they have made great strides
in the past few years. An increasing
percentage of the manufactured rattan
is coming from Indonesia:' for example.
He also reports that many companies
are now involved in exporting garments
from Indonesia. In addition, Hong
Kong companies are looking for places
to set up manufacturing outside of
Hong Kong as they anticipate transfer
of Hong Kong to the People's Republic
of China in 1990. "Many of them are
heading to Indonesia, primarily
because of the labor costs:' he says.
Goldsmith, whose business is
human resources, reports that, "more
and more Indonesians are taking over
senior positions in companies and
expatriates are leaving Indonesia. The
Indonesians are basically very intelligent
and, given the opportunity, they
are rapidly being promoted, especially
those that have had an overseas
education."
"One of the big issues that all
Americans are interested in is taxation;'
Goldsmith says. "In 1776, taxation
without representation was a big issue;
yet Americans overseas are still being
taxed without any representation. The
cost for Americans abroad has created
a situation in Indonesia and other
countries where most of the managers
of American companies are not
Americans. We have a lot of Australians
and a lot of Filipinos who are running
American companies;' says Goldsmith.
Intellectual property protection is
another significant issue in Southeast
Asia. It refers to copyrights, patents,
trademarks, pirated video tapes, pirated
computer software, and copied brandname
clothing. Niels Marquardt '80,
who works in the economic section of
the American Embassy in Thailand,
says, "The United States has a worldwide
campaign to press these countries
to provide better intellectual property
protection. Lately, the battle has focused
on Thailand because they've been a
little slower than a lot of other countries
like Singapore, Indonesia, and
Taiwan:'
Anoth" issue in the fmefwnt of
discussion among Southeast Asian
alumni is the GSp, general system of
preferences. 'The NICs (Newly Industrialized
Countries), which include
Singapore, have just been taken off
the GSP list, so their exports to the
United States are going to be relatively
more expensive;' Randy Oudemans '86
regional manager, WHo Brady Co. says.
A number of people believe that
Thailand can be expected to be a
rising economic force . The Philippines
and Indonesia are in contention for
second place, according to the alumni
who live in those countries.
In a speech at the Asian alumni
The United States has a

reunion, Jim Rooney '67, managing
director of J. P Rooney &: Associates
Ltd. in Bangkok, said, "The Thai
labor force is young, mobile, easily
trainable, and well educated. Significant
developments in the energy sector
have allowed Thailand to partially
reduce its dependence on imported
petroleum products. The investment
climate is good The economy is well
managed, highly diversified; the growth
prospect is good and the labor force
is growing.
. "There are problems in areas such
as taxation, tariffs, protection of
property rights; and bureaucratic red
tape in start-up projects is somewhat
difficult. They sometimes used to say
that when they cut the red tape in
Thailand, they cut it lengthwise.
However, these problems are manageable.
The Thais, historically, have been
very tolerant of foreign investment and
have welcomed it to their country"
Singapore is already well ahead of
the other Asian countries in its industrialization.
It is not only the second
busiest port in the world, but it is
also second in the world after Silicon
Valley in the manufacture of semiconductors.
Labor issues are also important.
Niels Marquardt, who is also U.S.
labor attache, says, "The AFL-ClO has
filed a petition under U.S. law to have
GSP suspended for Thailand, because
of their lack of protection of internationally
recognized worker rights."
He is also involved in issues of child
labor, civil aviation, and energy.
James Savage '75, regional manager
for Plexchem International, based in
the Philippines, said the main problem
in the Philippines is labor unrest in a
country where labor-intensive businesses
are dominant. The garment

industry, for example, can suffer serious
setbacks when labor disputes prevent
finished garments from leaving the
factory. He counters, however, that
"there are tremendous legitimate
demands of workers here, so it's a
fine line between what is a communistinspired
takeover of a factory, and
what are legitimate worker demands:'
...... POLITICS ......
M ost of Southeast Asia is now
relatively peaceful, although that was
not always the case. James Rooney
says, "Politically, Thailand has enjoyed
an extended period of stability dating
back to 1975 ... We've gone through a
number of those coups (in the past),
and in a way we kind of miss them.
One of the prime marks of the coup
was that traffic was always better:'
James Savage expresses great confidence
in the Aquino administration.
"I think the new government has
certainly been much more interested
in promoting business here. They have
encouraged international investment
in the Philippines, and they're doing
as much as they can to try to take
away some of the things that made it
difficult to do business here before.
We have a very dynamiC minister of
trade, Jose Concepcion. He is a businessman
in his own right, and was
one of the leaders in the movement
among businessmen to depose the
Marcos regime. In discussing the graft
and corruption that has often run
rampant in some Southeastern Asian
countries, Savage reports diligent efforts
by the Aquino government to "clean
up their act." He cites an example of
the new immigration chief who has
set up her offices in the airport in an
effort to cut corruption in the selling
of visas.
Goldsmith says, "Indonesia has had
a terrible reputation for graft and
corruption, some of it well founded ,
and it's particularly a problem for
those who have to deal with government
and have to bid for projects.
Nevertheless, that government is also
cleaning up its act;' he says, "and is
deregulating. Many countries are now
following a similar program of not
allowing payment of graft for government
contracts."
• LIFESTYLES.
I e lifes;yle in Southeast Asia ~ a major attraction for alumni. Most
Americans are able to afford at least
one household servant, or sometimes
a complete staff that may include a
gardener, driver, housekeeper, babysitter,
cook, or other help - all for
less than a single servant might cost
in the United States.
Randy Oudemans says it's possible
to get Filipinos or Indonesian servants
in Singapore at a very reasonable price.
'They are not as common as in Indonesia
or Thailand, but they're still
quite common, either part-time or
full-time:'
"It's nice to leave the house and
know it will be guarded and kept
clean, and our meals will be waiting
for us when we get home;' Goldsmith
says, "and with all the traffic and
parking problems, it's important to
have a driver:' James Savage adds,
'That's not as much a luxury as it
sounds because you need somebody
to take care of the vehicle and make
deliveries. In the Philippines, there's
no domestic telex system, so until
FAX machines came along, we had
messengers running around all over
the place."
For recreation, Savage goes scuba
diving, and plays squash and rugby.
"In fact ;' says Savage, "I came back
and watched a rugby game at Thunderbird
a few years ago. I also belong to
a hiking club. I'm the only foreigner
in the club; the rest are all Filipinos:'
Goldsmith, who likes sailing and
diving, says, "I have a boat here, so I

Randy Oudemans and his wife,
Claire (Hendy) '87, retreat from the
urban environment of Singapore into
Malaysia often. "You can drive out of
Singapore into Malaysia in an hour by
car and we take many weekend trips
and side trips out. Singapore, being
a small country and an island, one
has to get out to keep alive, alert,
and interested ;' he says.
"It's very Americanized here;' Savage
says of the Philippines. "We have
Armed Forces television service and
can get American TV'

readily available and reported to be

educational expenses and various other
allowances. Michael Nebeker '84 and
his wife, Nancy, who have three young
children, are enthusiastic about the
education available at the International
School in Bangkok. "It's like sending
them to a private school in the States;'
says Nancy, "but with an international
dimension." Both Michael and Nancy
speak Thai and are teaching the
language to their children.
G rowth seems to be one of the
few common denominators in this
diverse culture. Goldsmith has lived
in Indonesia since 1972 and has
watched its explosive development.
"Most people don't know that while
the United States is the fourth most
populous country in the world, Indonesia
is fifth with over 150 million
people. Jakarta is a city of between 7
million and 8 million people, with
the usual problems of heavy traffic
and urban sprawl." The most notable
change he's observed is the extensive
construction activity: hotels, roads,
airports.
"Traffic has also increased dramatically.
There's a large, lower middle
class population that is buying motorcycles,
so you have a tremendous
motorcycle population here, as you
do in the rest of Asia;' says Goldsmith.
Alumni in Bangkok, Manila, and
Kuala Lumpur report similar construction
activity and traffic congestion
with motorcycles roaring and weaving
fearlessly around the slow-moving
automobiles.

.... T'BIRD NETWORK ....
A lthough the numbe, of alumni
in Southeastern Asian countries is
relatively small, they report exceptional
camaraderie. "Because we're so busy:'
says Michael Nebeker of Thailand,
"we don't have time for First Tuesdays
like so many of the groups do, but we
see each other constantly at Chamber
of Commerce luncheons , business
breakfasts, and in the normal course
of business."
Randy Oudemans echoes Michael's
sentiments. 'Tbirds are in key positions
with a lot of my larger customers. I
get phone calls from Tbirds, I purchase
things from other Tbirds. I have a lot
of interaction with different Tbirds
not only at work, but after work on
the golf course, on the tennis courts,
and at the club. At work, I even seek
th em out and see where our two
companies can work together for
mutual benefit. It's a very cultivated
network:'
Michael Nebeker, who works for
Burson Marsteller public relations in
Bangkok, coordinated the first Asian
alumni reunion, held in Thailand last
February. Oudemans is coordinating
the next event to be held in Singapore
February 24-26, 1989. (See article
below.)
Niels Marquardt says, "In terms of
my Thunderbird background in
working with American business here,
there's nothing like saying you're a
Tbird. People know right away you're
on their side. I meet a lot of people
and see who their contacts might be.
Some, like Jim Reinnoldt '81 who is

include Chinese, Malays, Thais,
Filipinos, Indians, Americans, and
Europeans. Religions range from
animism, spiritualism, through Hinduism,
Buddhism, moism, Confucianism,
Christia nity, and Islam. Only Thailand
has remained uncolonized . There are
Dutch, French, and Spanish influences
nearly everywhere else.
Randy Oudemans, who deals with
many Chinese business people, calls
it "an eye-opening experience. The
Chinese are not as interested in the
quick turnaround, but in the long
term. Also, business is based quite a
bit on personal friendships , contacts,
and relatives. In the States, it might
be based on pure economic and business
cri teria ." Oudemans, whose
territory includes India, Pakistan,
Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia,
and Thailand, says, "I treat each of
these countries uniquely in my market
approach because of their ethnic and
religious backgrounds. I can't treat a
Buddhist businessman in Thailand
like I can a Chinese businessman in
Singapore. This is probably the most
fascinating thing for me - being
involved and rubbing shoulders with
this cultural diversity day by day."

FMC's JAMES
McCLUNG SPEAKS
TO STUDENTS
In April, Thunderbird welcomed
international business executive James
A. McClung, who served as ExecutiveIn-
Residence on campus in April.
McClung is vice president/international
of FMC Corporation in Chicago, a
Fortune 120 company which manufactures
and produces machinery and
chemicals for industry, government,
and agriculture.
While on campus, McClung was
available to members of the Thunderbird
community to discuss not only the
operations of FMC, but also changes in
the global business envIronment which
influence the feasibility of international
transactions. In addition to meeting
informally with students and faculty,
McClung spoke on two separate
occasions, detailing the international
activities of FMC.
McClung's first colloquium, entitled
"FMC and the International Business
Environment;' contained an overview
of FMC's international businesses and
described various worldwide trends
that have shaped the environment in
which the company operates. He gave
particular attention to trends caused by
the u.s. trade and budget deficits
which have strengthened the political
support for protectionism.
In responding to changes in the
international environment, McClung
indicated that his company is considering
expanded export opportunities
caused by the weakening dollar. Also,
FMC is carefully selecting market
strategies and targeting growth countries
in order to gain market share and
improve its competitiveness.
"A critical area of focus relates to
improving the international expertise
of FMC managers;' McClung said in
explaining FMC's plans to support
company objectives. "In addition, we
must develop international management
skills within our operations through
appropriate development and training
programs."
During his second presentation,
McClung gave special emphasis to the
role of cooperative ventures in
international strategy FMC is active in
cooperative ventures, and McClung
described various categories of FMC's
cooperative pursuits as determined by
strategic and host country goals. He
emphasized the careful weighing of
political risks and benefits of the
venture before undertaking such an
investment.
"It is important to look beyond the
present political leadership in the
country's political philosophy, value
structure and historical attitude toward
intellectual property rights;' he said.
According to McClung, the current
international business environment
encourages global business to approach
cooperative ventures both cautiously
and creatively

ASSOCIATION
OF EUROPE
The lAAE board met in May
to review progress and discuss
future strategy. Based on the
growing number of alumni in
Europe and the fact that alumni
functions have grown stronger
and easier to control at a local
level, it was decided operations
would be streamlined.
The lAAE will act as a communication
and coordination
point between countries in
Europe without the administrative
and financial functions
it previouly performed. Country
coordinators will act as a steering
committee with no formal
structure but will communicate
to compare activities, pursue
common goals, and discuss
reunions. Future dues will be
collected at the local level.
Countries are encouraged to
form chapters and register with
the Thunderbird Alumni

ALUMNI PROFILES
Pursuing an international
career came naturally to
Dennis Oshiro '72, but not
easily. He grew up in the
heart o[ a foreign area of
Honolulu which, even today,
still looks, smells and feels
more a part of Asia than the
United States.
Oshiro knew that his background
gave him an extraordinary
edge [or international
business, but he lacked
credibility. "Thunderbird
gave me the credibility and
more. I tell college students
who ask, Thunderbird will
get you through the door.
After that it's all up to you:"
church. When the project
was completed he was without
funds, but not without
resources. A businessman
offered three years of support
to allow Oshiro to get his
business started. By the end
of the third year Oshiro had
repaid his benefactor in full
plus a hefty premium for
the use of the money.
the Island of Maui:' The
marriage Oshiro was able to
consummate between
Tobishima and Amfac after
22 months of negotiations
will result in the construction
over the next five years of
five hotels with an overall
projected cost of $ 700
million.
"In my consulting work, I
depend a great deal on the
Thunderbird alumni around
the world. When I need
assistance or information at
the grass-roots level in foreign
countries, I hire Thunderbirds
on a moonlighting
basis. The Thunderbird network
allows me to help clients
quickly almost anywhere in
the world :'
After leaving Thunderbird
he was with First Hawaiian
Bank where he was responsible
for all lending and
investment activities in
Japan , Korea and Thiwan.
His dream was to start his
own international consulting
business.
In 1981 he oversaw the
finanCing of a new Sunday
school building for his
His consulting activities
have ranged from researching
overseas markets to finding
reliable distributors. However,
small assignments can
sometimes lead to much
bigger projects.
[n 1984, Oshiro advised,
Tobishima Corporation,
Japan's 10th largest general
construction company not
to pursue three Hawaiian
projects. 't\bout that time, an
executive of Amfac, Inc.
Hawaii's largest corporation
informed me that his firm
was seeking a joint venture
partner to develop the last
95 acres of the world famous
Kaanapali Beach Resort on
As for the future, Oshiro
hopes that someday his 8-
year-old son Michael will
also attend Thunderbird to
prepare him to take over the
consulting practice.
