A FAMILY TRADITION
Second-generation T'Birds
perpetuate the mystique.
On October 1, 1946, the American
Institute for Foreign Trade opened its
doors to 285 students committed to
the principle set forth in the School's
Statement of Policy:
The world today stands on the
threshold of a new era: an era in
which, if mankind is to survive, an
ever-expanding global trade must
help foster mutual understanding
and goodwill among nations.
In those 40 years since, Thunderbird
has matured as an academic institution.
Nothing signals that maturity
better than the appearance of secondgeneration
Tbirds among the ranks of
recent graduates.
Thirty alumni from the first 15
years of the School's graduating classes
have now seen their sons or daughters
graduate from Thunderbird. Among
those offspring, almost half have been
women, compared to the four female
students enrolled in the Class of 1947.
Many things have changed over the
years, but many things have remained
the same. ..
FROM THE FORTIES
TO THE EIGHTIES The class of 1946-47 was geared
toward preparing students for
success in Latin America as representatives
of business and commer-cial
firms and of the government.
Carl G. Gonzalez was in the first
graduating class of 1947. His career in
international commerce took him
through 15 years of living in various
South American countries. Carl retired
in 1984 as Regional Manager of
Dunham-Bush International, but his
son, Carl]. Gonzalez, carries on the
tradition. As the first in an increasing
succession of second generation
Tbirds, Gonzalez graduated in 1967
and has since lived and worked in
Ghana and Rio de Janeiro. He now
works for SmithKline and French
Laboratories in Philadelphia.
In 1948, John A. Warner graduated
from Thunderbird and chose a
career in international management
with PepsiCo, Inc. After living abroad
for 30 years in such places as Uruguay,
Venezuela, Peru, and Australia, plus
many years in Mexico, it was natural
for two of his children to pursue
international careers. Warner advised
that a master's degree in management
would be useful for progress in
business. Thunderbird would give
them the credentials they needed, he
predicted, and the "Mystique would
add a lifetime of excitement from the
contacts with the School:'
John's daughter, Nancy Warner
Trevino '82, is Senior Advertising
SpeCialist, Wang Laboratories. She
chose Thunderbird because she had
lived abroad for most of her life,
wanted to be in the international
arena, and "my father and his friends
loved it!" She writes, "After Thunderbird,
I was hired in a perfect position:
that of international marketing communication
specialist. Responsibility
grew from Latin America and Canada
to include Africa, the Middle East, and
eventually Asia/Pacific (Australia, New
Zealandr'
John A. Warner, Jr., a member of
the May 1985 graduating class, is just
beginning his international career.
..
FROM NURSERY SCHOOL
TO GRADUATE SCHOOL
Among the 173 students
graduating in the Class of
1949 were Kenneth]. Miller
and Dwight A. Steffen. Both enjoyed
careers in Latin America but along
different lines. Miller retired from Sears,
Roebuck & Co. as international operations
manager after 31 years, twelve
of which were spent in Peru and
Venezuela. Miller says Thunderbird
strengthened his desire to live and work
abroad and prOVided him with an
excellent language base and fluency.
Randolph K. Miller 73, who was
nurtured on Thunderbird Mystique,
chose Thunderbird partly as a "desire
to complete training begun at the
A.I.ET. Nursery School in 1948-1949~'
Now Senior Vice PreSident, Special
Assets Department, NBC Bank, San
Antonio, Miller says Thunderbird has
helped him "realize the American way
is not the definitive answer to lifestyles
or business practices~' He remembers
his father's advice, "Don't get dumped
in the pool," and "shake your shoes
and boots in the morning for scorpions~'
Steffen chose a career in international
banking, and says, "Thunderbird
provided the speCialized education
necessary to accomplish my objective~'
Retired as Vice PreSident, First
National Bank of Boston, Steffen and
his family spent 17 years in Argentina
and eight years in Haiti.
Dwight Steffen recommended
Thunderbird to his two sons: David A.
Steffen 78, with Goodyear Espanola
S.A.; and Peter D. Steffen '80, Royal
Bank of Canada, Miami, Florida.
Larry K. Mellinger '68, remembers

decision to attend Thunderbird.
Melvin E Mellinger '49 recalls his
son as leing an alumnus of sorts from
his childhood. Larry attended Thunderbird's
Nursery School in 1949
while his parents attended classes and
"by osmosis he couldn't fail but get the
word~'
Melvin Mellinger began his career
with Pepsi in Latin America and later
with Cessna in Australia and the
family lived abroad with him.
Larry Mellinger has pursued a
career in international banking and as
a CEO in private industry. He currently
is one of President Reagan's appointees
representing the United States at
the Inter-American Development Bank.
• THE FIFTIES TRADITION
CONTINUES
Dr. William Lytle Schurz,
President of A.I.ET. when the
class of 1950 graduated, is
remembered fondly by four of those
graduates whose offspring have carried
on the Thunderbird tradition. In
1950, Latin America was still the major
emphasis of study.
Charles C. Muse '50, President!
Owner, Intergraphic, Inc., Panama,
writes, "It was the Thunderbird experience
which got me my first job and it
had a lot to do with the second and
third too . .. all in export. Never
worked a day in domestic. After that
(30 years ago) I went out on my own
overseas where I've been since, ever
grateful for the Schurzes, the Murphys,
the Wilsons, the Shaterians, the
Jackels, the Ericksons and the others
who made Thunderbird an experience:'
Muse took his family overseas with
the idea of establishing a permanent
residence and raising his children
there. "That conditions the mind to
see and react differently," he says.
"Some short termers are virtually
tourists on a lark who return home
after a few years never haVing experienced
sleeping in the beds in which
they ate the crackers:'
MarkM. Muse '85, speaks of his
father's influence in his choice of
attending Thunderbird. liMy father
spoke so highly of the A.I.ET. of
old-its courses, its teachers, etc.,
coupled with professional and personal
interests of remaining and
working overseas-Thunderbird providing
the key to the lock to secure a
career along those interests~' Muse is
currently a marketing trainee in the
Latin America/Iberia division of Philip
Morris, International and is working in
Panama.
• INTERNATIONAL
FAMILIES Daniel D. Witcher '50, is Corporate
and Senior Vice PreSident,
Worldwide Human Health
Businesses, The Upjohn Company,
and a member of the Thunderbird
Board of Trustees. Thunderbird provided
language, cultural understanding
and business enlightenment as tools
to help Witcher in his career. He speaks
of his family as international. Fourteen
years were spent in Brazil, a
daughter lives in Ecuador, one son is
in the Navy, another travels the world
over on business, and a third resides
in Canada. "Thunderbird has changed
a little and a lot at the same time,"
Witcher says. liThe excitement
remains. The uniqueness is still there.
The mystique is real. The students and
faculty are far superior-as are most
determined students and faculty members
today'
Witcher feels he had a definite
influence on his son's decision to
attend Thunderbird.]' Wright Witcher
'77, was born in Brazil, and international
travel and life was a normal
lifestyle for him. J. Wright Witcher currently
resides in Puerto Rico.
Selwyn]. Graves '50, was the first
member of his family to attend
Thunderbird. He influenced a brother,
Francis P. Graves '59; a cousin,
William Banning '54; two nieces,
jane Wendell Graves Mix '83 and
Anita B. Otten '80; as well as his
oldest daughter, julia B. Graves '84,
who attended as a Keyman entrant.
Selwyn Graves chose a career in
foreign trade, influenced by his Thunderbird
professors. liThe early professors
I had were all great, accomplished,
profound and humble men:' Leaining
a second language as well as knowledge
and respect for the customs and
mores of other cultures has also
contributed to Graves' career. He is
currently PreSident, Hydro-Mix International,
El Cajon, California.
Julia B. Graves is a Professor of
English as a Second Language at
Centro Colombo Americano of Pereira
(Colombia). When offered the position,
she enrolled in the Key Manager
course, Fall 1984, to study and
improve Spanish. Her father's advice:
liThe School's language department
had to be good. It taught me Spanish
and I am deaf. Anyone who can teach
a deaf man a foreign language has to
be doing something right'
Frederick R. DeRoever '50, says
Thunderbird reaffirmed his desire to
work abroad and proVided him with a
better understanding of customs and
cultures of foreign nationals. Currently
Project Administrator, The Ralph M.
Parsons Co., a career in international
administration enabled his family to
join him in Austria, France, Greece and
Panama. When his son, FrederickJr.,
was born, a congratulatory letter was
received from Dr. William Schurz
promising a room would be reserved
for the fall semester of 1971 . Frederick
R. DeRoever,jr., graduated from
Thunderbird in 1974.
• SONS AND DAUGHTERS IN
THEIR FATHERS' FOOTSTEPS In 1955, French was added to the
curriculum and Edward Juliber was
preSident john A. Macy graduated
that year and pursued a career in
international marketing with Carnation
International which included 15
years residence in Mexico and Brazil.
In 1981, two ofMacy's daughters, Kit
Macy Bennett and jan Mary
Buescher, follOWing in his footsteps,
graduated from the American Graduate
School of International Management.
Kit is a Project Officer with the
United Nations, and Jan is Assistant
Vice PreSident, Wells Fargo Bank.
Macy offered the follOWing advice to
his daughters: encouragement to concentrate
on marketing, business and
financial courses, and to improve their
knowledge of international business.
The mid '50s saw Thunderbird
graduates gravitate to another part of
the globe: the Far East.

his career with Monsanto and lived in
Tokyo and Hong Kong for 10 years.
His son, Andrew, graduated from
Thunderbird in December, 1986. After
spending his childhood in Asia, Culver
felt a commitment toward continuing
his international experience.
Philip W Sweany '53, and his
daughter, Kathleen C. Sweany 79,
both chose careers with Eastman
Kodak Company upon graduation
from Thunderbird. Philip Sweany
writes, "A number of aspects about
Thunderbird stand out: the concepts
offered here were most valuable in the
Far East; exposure to talented instructors
who gave so much of themselves;
interaction with other students sharing
a common desire to succeed in the
international arena~' When his daughter
expressed preference to work for an
international company, Thunderbird
was the recommendation.
Charles A. Whitcomb remembers
36 students in his February 1954
graduating class. He also cites language
training in Spanish as an aspect
of importance in his international
banking career. Now Vice Chairman
and PreSident, Intercontinental Bank
Miami, his career entailed 15 years i~
Puerto Rico and extensive travel in
South and Central America as well as
Europe.
Laura P Whitcomb-Bailey '80, is
Community Services Representative,
D~las Power and Light Company.
While she was a student 24 years later,
Berger Erickson, Larry Finney, and the
late Paul Wilson were all at the School
and Paul Wilson taught both father '
and daughter. .. THE CLASS OF '56
SENDS THEIR OWN
Dr. Carl A. Sauer was president
of Thunderbird in 1956 and
two degrees were offered: a
Bachelor of Foreign Trade and a Master
of Foreign Trade. Paul S. Dulaney
'56, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.,
recalls, "In those days, Thunderbird
was small enough that a student could
know almost everyone, from president
to maintenance people~'
Among his classmates were Carroll
M. Rickard, Vice President and Division
Manager, Continental Illinois
National Bank; Diane Connelly-
Gallagher, Administrative Assistant,
Arizona State Real Estate Department;
Robert Connelly; Bill Tiernay, Area
Vice PreSident, Latin America/Iberia
Philip Morris International; and '
Robert N Bailey, Purchasing Manager,
Ecusta Corporation.
The common theme of Latin
American Studies and the excellence
of the Spanish and Portuguese language
programs is present in their
careers after the Thunderbird experience.
Carroll Rickard writes, "The
classes in Portuguese taught me the
basics that have enabled me to
negotiate transactions, dictate business
correspondence, survive SOcially
and probably most enjoyable of all, to
get hooked on the very excellent
literature ofBrazil~'
These 1956 graduates shared
another theme-travel and residence
with their families in South and
Central America and Italy. They also
have children carrying on the Thunderbird
tradition.
In 1983, Gregory T Rickard
graduated from Thunderbird and
began a career in international banking.
An account officer with Security
Pacific Bank, Rickard feels his international
experience has allowed him to
mature further and "better-rounded"
him profeSSionally as compared to his
strictly domestic colleagues.
Diane Connelly, the daughter of
Robert Connelly and Diane ConnellyGallagher
graduated in 1977. Her
mother was Director of Alumni Relations
at Thunderbird during that time,
and was influential in the decision to
attend Thunderbird: her advice was
"education is power~' ,
Michael L. Dulaney '86, chose
Thunderbird after deciding on an
international career. His father Paul
adVised, "Work hard and play hard. if
you work at it, you can advance your
career faster and further in the
international field than in the
domestic~'
Robert N. Bailey's daughter,
Kristen, was seven weeks old when the
family left for Northern Italy. After
living, traveling, and working in
Europe, Kristen attends Thunderbird
and will graduate in 1987.
Another student who will receive a
Master of International Management
degree in 1987 is William H. Tiernay.
His father's advice: "Excel in studies.
Focus on business marketing. Consider
domestic as well as international
opportunities~' ..
THEY DREAM
THE SAME DREAMS
David E Schroeder '57, was the
first person Ford Motor Co.
International Division ever
hired out of Thunderbird. Schroeder's
wife, also a Tbird graduate, was
totally bilingual and "we made a great
team~' His daughter, Carey Schroeder
Johnson, graduated in 1983. Schroeder
writes, "My daughter grew up in a
bilingual environment in a business
world~' His advice was, "It's a tough
school-most of your classmates are
self-wound' kids like you-so it will
be a 'fast track~ You have a good basic
education and a great ambition. Since
you want to be top gun in the business
world, spread your wings and go for it!~'
Carey Schroeder Johnson is currently
Product Manager, Carnation
Company, Los Angeles. "Thunderbird's
group project orientation in marketing
classes teach how to manage and
direct people toward a common goal,"
she says. "This is 90 percent of what I
do in marketing~'
Richard Philip Slijk graduated in
1985. Richard relates hearing about
Thunderbird throughout his life from
his parents. His father, K. Nick Slijk
graduated in 1955 and remembered
the cultural and language asp~cts of
the School and how difficult accounting
was. K. Nick Slijk is currently
Executive Vice PreSident, Chula Vista
Chamber of Commerce, California .
Thunderbird's first 40 years have
seen tremendous changes in curriculum,
staff, administration, and
physical plant. However, as Carroll
Rickard says, "It still retains a lot of the
same atmosphere as one walks around
the campus. The students are perhaps
a little younger or maybe they just
seem that way. When one talks to
them, however, they still have the
same keen intellectual curiOSity and
the same dreams of doing something
just a bit different from the average
run that I seem to remember from my
own classmates~'
The tradition continues.

the ftrst annual Alumni Leaders
Conference, held on the Thunderbird
Campus as part of the 40th Anniversary
and Groundbreaking Ceremonies.
The one-day conference was sponsored
by the Thunderbird Alumni Association
and the Alumni Relations Office.
"One of the main goals of the
conference was to open communication
between the various chapters,"
said Bobbie Boyd, director of alumni
relations. "The leaders in attendance
were able to share the methods that
they use to keep alumni active and
motivated in their own chapters.
The participants also discussed
activities and programs that are popular
among their members:'
She added that the recommendations
resulting from the meeting
would be mailed to all the Thunderbird
alumni chapters:'
In addition to exchanging ideas
about alumni motivation, the conference
partiCipants heard Dr. William
Voris, School president, deliver a
state-of-the-school address. The chairman,
or a representative from each
academic department also presented a
review of the activities and changes
in their departments.
"The alumni that attended the
conference felt it was extremely worthwhile,"
said Stephen Hall '69, recently
elected president of the Thunderbird
Alumni Association and coordinator
for the conference. "Most people
agreed that it is a great way to improve
chapter development:'
According to Hall, the conference
might last for two days next year. He
also indicated that future conferences
might be held in different locations so
that more alumni would be able to
