Editor's Note
• What's so special about this issue?
In spite of being a bit smaller than usual, this issue of Thunderbird magazine
has three special pieces of information to offer you.
FIRST, check out the Updates beginning on page 8. You'll notice there are a lot
more than usual (over 1,200!). The reason? Many of you have sent in your most
current information for the soon-to-be-published 1996 Alumni Directory (the
newest since 1993, due out in December). Also, with the 50th anniversary
homecoming arriving soon (November 1-3), many T'birds want their classmates
to know what they are doing.
SECOND, take a look at the photos on pages 6 and 7 from the European
Reunion held this June in beautiful Budapest. You might see a friend you know!
THIRD and last, flip to page 2 for a story about 15 T'birds who are working hard
to make Thunderbird responsive to your needs.
Tlwmas McMiUan, Managing Editor
P.S. Keep your eyes out this October for a very special 50th anniversary issue.
We guarantee it will make you feel nostalgic.

HOMECOMING!
A LET T E R FRO M JOY , 8 6
Friendship and Pride
As a fellow Tbird, I'm especially proud to be a part of the forward motion going on at Thunderbird
right now. It's a privilege to share in the excitement generated from the School's #1 ranking in
U.S. News and our 50th Anniversary. .
But the best is yet to come.
The alumni office is preparing for several hundred of you to join us for Homecoming, November 1-3.
Yes, that's a lot of Tbirds in one place. If the crowd is anything like the ones that have attended our
50th Anniversary parties in San Francisco, L.A, or Budapest, there's no telling what might happen!
Homecoming is particularly significant this year. It's a chance to come back and reflect on the part
Thunderbird has played in your various successes over the last half-century. It's also
a chance to walk hand-in-hand with the School into the next 50 years.
Be forewarned: When you arrive, you may be surprised by some of the significant
changes to the campus! To help re-acquaint you, we have tours planned all weekend.
Even so, there is much that is still the same. Yes, the Tower, the Pub, and the
Quad (aka the Fish, Jurassic Park) are as popular as ever with T'birds. But I'm
also talking about those things you cannot see, like the friendship and pride we've
shared at Thunderbird. I think you'll find heavy doses of both here in November.

PROOF. In the past year alone, there is
proof of progress towards each. Most
recently, at the Budapest Reunion this
June, about 20 alumni met to discuss
the formation of a European Regional
Council. Among them was John Cook
'79, one of the main people behind 21
successful European reunions, who is
helping to coordinate the council with
the School's Alumni Office.
Meanwhile, an increasing number of
events are drawing alumni to campus as
speakers, mentors, and guests. And at
this year's Homecoming, presidents of
alumni chapters are invited to sit faceto-
face with TAA Board members for a
first-ever round table discussion.
When it comes to creating value for
alumni, this T'bird is working hard administration, and current

VISIBILITY. "Many alumni out there
say they've never understood what the
alumni association does," says Dillon.
"And the alumni chapters will also tell
you the board is not as visible as it
should be." Fortunately for alumni, as
the TAA board president Dillon is in a
position to change the situation.
One way Dillon and other alumni
board members (see pg. 4) are increasing
the TAA's visibility is through
increased involvement in alumni and
school events. And they're giving it
more credibility by owning up to past
mistakes and reaching out to alumni,
THUNDERBIRD 50 /21 1996
"We all talk about the
Thunderbird mystique and
the Thunderbird network, which is one
of the strengths of the school," he says.
"But we should also talk about the
school supporting alumni, alumni supporting
the students, students supporting
the school. It's really this three-way
interaction that is most powerful."
Dillon likens the alumni association
to a vehicle-one that can be used to
cross the distance between alumni, students,
and the School's administration.
At the same time, he is aware some
administrators and alumni may still
believe this car is in need of a tune-up.
His message to them? "We're saying
we're going to change," he notes, "we're
going to do it better. "
In two years, Dillon wants the board
to produce a "report card" allowing
alumni to grade its progress on specific
goals. These include developing an
alumni advisory council in Europe and
Although the TAA board may be
headed by a different T'bird when the
report card is released, that doesn't
bother Dillon. In fact, one of the association's
priority goals is to increase
recruiting efforts from within Thunderbird's
80 alumni chapters.
"You need new blood to keep the
approach fresh and the energy levels
high," says Dillon. "The make-up of our
board should reflect the diversity of our
students and alumni."
Regardless of which alumni are guiding
the TAA board two years from now,
Dillon is confident the group's efforts
on behalf of all T'birds will not go
unnoticed. "As we deliver the report
card," he says, "we expect it to be
highly visible. It's something we could
speak about with pride that says 'Look,
we're accomplishing things, we're
really here.'" •

Seeing Eye to Eye
With Students
Nearly 200 students came to

A primary reason students have always chosen Thunderbird
is the opportunity to graduate into the most powerful
international business network in the world-the
Thunderbird alumni network.
These days, however, some students are not waiting
for graduation. They want guidance and advice from
alumni when they need it most: as students deciding
what career path to take.
"We need to bring this 'Thunderbird Mystique' from
outside the campus onto the campus," says Martin
Hernandez, who has the honor this year of being the
100th president of Thunderbird's student government. "A
lot of students think the alumni office is something they
need to sign up for when they graduate."
Perhaps because he follows in the footsteps of 99
other T'birds who have gone before him since 1947,
Hernandez is determined to increase communication
between current students and alumni.
ROLE MODELS. One way to bring students and alumni
together in mutually rewarding ways, says the student
leader, is to
encourage more
alumni to return
to Thunderbird as
expert speakers
and role models.
Programs that
feature direct student-
alumni contact
are already
popular among
students, including the Executive Exchange, the Student-
Alumni Mentor program, InterAd, and several
Wmterim courses that feature alumni as instructors.
The extra efforts many alumni have made to participate
in these programs are admirable. Eric Schroder
'79, country manager of Thailand for Johnson & Higgins
insurance, made a trip last year from Bangkok to guest
lecture in the Regional Business Environment/Asia class.
It was his ~t.visit back to Thunderbird in }6 years.
Not surpnsmgly, students are also making the extra
effort. In April Mary Doan '80, CEO and President of
Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising in San Francisco, and Ken
Lambert '77, Managing Director of DMB&B Americas,
were featured presenters at a day-long international marketing
symposium--{)rganized not by the administration,
but by T'bird students. Nearly 200 students came to hear
the two alumni speak.
"For us, the opportunity to interact with alumni working
in the industries we want to work in is invaluable
experience," says Hernandez.-JenniJer Barrett •

EUROPEAN REUNION
Budapest-From business forum to buffet,
_ T'birds had a memorable time
by John Cook '79
The spirit of Thunderbird shone all
weekend long June 6-9, 1996, as
more than 250 alumni and guests
from over 25 countries-some from as
far away as Hawaii, Scotland and
Russia-gathered in Budapest, Hungary
for the 21st annual European Reunion.
Like last year, the highlight of the
weekend (in addition to the social activities!)
was Thunderbird's trademark
European Business Forum. This year's
forum brought together European executives,
economists and politicians to
explore the topic of "Trends and Transition
in Central Europe: The Commercial
Perspective," and was co-sponsored by
the Harvard Club of Hungary, the
American Chamber of Commerce and
the International Management Center.
Attendees of the forum were certainly
in good company: U.S. Ambassador to
Hungary Donald Blinken opened the
session with lessons on Hungary and its
economy in the post-Cold War era. Mr.
Ernest Beck, Central Europe Correspondent
for the Wall Street Journal,
moderated the conference.
Expert speakers and panelists that
followed included Dr. Lajos Bokros,
former Minister of Finance for Hungary;
Dr. Gyorgy Szapary, Deputy President,
National Bank of Hungary; Mr. Kenneth
Wisnoski, President, Tenneco
Energy Europe; Mr. Michael Zafirovski,

Dr. Aldo Fozzati, Vice President and

The forum ended with a lively
question-and-answer session.
Here's a quick run down of the full
weekend:
THURSDAY, after check-in at the
Marriott, attendees were treated to a
grand buffet and reception at the New
York Cafe, a beautiful turn-of-the-century
eating and drinking establishment.
FRIDAY started off with city tours of
Budapest by bus, followed by the
European Business Forum, at which
the press and local business leaders
were well represented. The day concluded
with a gala dinner, where
speaker Colonel James McConnell
provided a description of the U.S.
deployment in Bosnia.
Ernest Beck, Central Europe
Correspondent for the Wall Street
Journal and moderator for the business
forum, holds court with Dr. Aldo
Fozzati, Vice President and General
Manager, Delco Remy International,
and Mr. Chris Lacey, Director of
Sales/Marketing, GM/Opel Hungary.
"Trends and Transition in Central
Europe" was the forum theme.
Dr. Lajos Bokros,
former finance minister
of Hungary,
offered insight into
the tough steps his
government took
to solidify the
Hungarian
economy.
