FOREWORD
This book records a small segment of our lives, the school
year 1962-1963. Small in time, yet infinite in importance,
the year has brought us much good. We came for knowledge
and matured in the process. We leave well-prepared
to meet whatever destinies await us in the world.
These pages reflect the daily lives of the people at the
American Institute for Foreign Trade. O ur professors are
pictured as we have seen them countless times. The other
men and women who are the backbone of the Institute
are also featured in their daily environment.
Meanwhile, every day scenes and special events are recorded
with refreshing impact. In the succeeding years,
as we peruse these pages, we will recall this memorable
year with fondness, a slight smile, and a sense of
accomplishment.

PRESIDENT SAUER
Before coming to the Institute in 1950 as assistant to
the president, Dr. Carl A. Sauer had behind him a successful
career in business and government service which took
him to many parts of the world. He received his M.A.
from the University of Southern California and his doctor
of Laws from Arizona State University.
He has been associated with Marshall Field and Co.,
Ventura Junior College, and was director of the ColombianAmerican
Culture Center, Bogota, Colombia. He became
president of the Institute in 1953.
Since then A.I. F.T. has continued to grow under Dr.
Sauer's skillful leadership. This year's students will remember
him as the man with the glowing smile whose
door is always open to everybody.
.
BERGER ERICKSON
Executive Vice-President
Students will long remember Berger Erickson's
booming voice charged with good
humor. He manages the affairs of the Institute
calmly, intelligently and good naturedly
while cheerfully solving the financial
problems of those who seek his
advice .

NEWMAN CLUB
A social gathering of Catholic students and faculty
with a common religious interest. This year the
club sponsored talks by well-known clergymen,
and provided services for various groups in the
Phoenix area.
SAC - our nearest approach to a student government
acted more in a liaison capacity between the students and
the administration. At their weekly Monday afternoon
meetings, the elected officers from both semesters and
officers of all campus groups were called on to discuss
everything from delivering mail on Saturdays to
the projected " Fun Day." Among the most spirited
events of the year were the elections held to select
members and officers, drawing over 90% of the students to
the polls to vote. The SAC dance held at the end of the
registration period makes SAC the first organization to officially
greet the students. And traditionally it is the last to
say goodbye .. . this year with a farewell party for all.

deram muito colorido a festa.
Heitor Luiz Rodriguez, Presidente, Alex Perdicas, Vice·Presidente

ACTIVITIES
STUDENT LIFE
34
We came to this school
To develop a tool
To find a place for ourselves in this world.
We'd study and learn
The midnight oil it would burn,
We'd find a place for ourselves in your world.
Accounting and lab,
A Richtorian punjab
I.C., Ac., - B.C.
We start with the premise
That never a grimace
Will get you that seat on the board
And slowly advance
To posture and stance
Never a negative chord.
In moments so rare
With a thrilling fanfare
Specifics are advanced.
Students, chagrined
When to specifics they're pinned
And no longer are romanced.
My words are sublime
But most difficult to rhyme
And I falter in persipicascity.
The year it has flown
Well, they tell me I've grown
I now have the tools of duplicity.

climate and extensive recreational facilities,
The Thunderbird Lodge is best known for the
incomparable attention and devoted service it provides
for i guests.
Our property consists of 180 acres of superbly
landscaped grounds, arranged into the form of
the legendary Thunderbird which in American Indian
lore signifies good fortune.
Easily accessible by car in one-day ventures are the
monolithic Grand Canyon, the ancient ruins of formerly
glorious Indian cities, the forested mountain
regions of northern Arizona which provide extensive
skiing facilities, and many colorful Mexican
cities distinguished by their exciting bullfights.
Moreover, a half hour drive will carry you into the
heart of downtown Phoenix, a center prepared to
satisfy the most exacting tastes.
However, let us quote to you a passage from a letter recently
received from one of our patrons, Lord Raymond
Woodbury, of Lancaster. He obligingly expresses "many
thanks for a delightful sojourn, Stan . You, as Maitre d'
Hotel, your porters, bellboys, clerks, and others assiduously
cared for all my needs, for which service I am
grateful indeed . Moreover, I shall not soon forget our
most pleasant chats. It is my pleasure to recommend
your establishment to my friends, and I, myself, am anticipating
my next holiday at The Thunderbird."
Lord Woodbury is but one of many of our distinguished
guests who have found relaxation and health at The
Lodge.
Your genial host,
"Stan" Zagrogwiska

The activities of The Lodge center around the Hogan,
which includes our sumptuous Dining Hall. At
your command is our cuisine, featuring an international
diversity of succulent meals tastefully prepared
by European chefs of world reknown. Waiters
are at all times alert to serve you.
We can accommodate two hundred guests. Our
rooms, moreover, are spacious and selectively decorated,
with wall to wall carpeting. Adjoining are
expansive, private baths. All is provided so that
the vacationer will be able to relax in his home
away from home, free from the problems that
could beset him elsewhere.

The pool is about due for a change
of water.
Fun for a II age groups.
Our guests, regardless of age, are urged
to participate in outdoor activities of one
sort or another. The hot winters make
swimming especially enjoyable and, with
this consideration in mind, we maintain
two pools exclusively for the recreational
use of our patrons. We also provide such
varied facilities as a softball diamond, a
shuffleboard court, a volleyball court,
badminton courts, tennis courts, and a basketball
court. The surrounding countryside
offers excellent opportunities for
horseback riding, golf, and hunting.
We highly recommend our planned evening programs featuring
dancing to our twelve piece band. The cinema, theatrical presentations,
as well as orchestral, ensemble, and solo concerts in the
Greater Phoenix Area are also a must on your entertainment schedules.

You will find it very difficult to
depart from The Thunderbird
Lodge, the Oasis of the Arizona
desert. As is the case with Lord
Woodbury, you will be eagerly
looking forward to another stay
here in the Valley of the Sun.

Dr. WILLIAM LYTLE SCHURZ
The death of Dr. Schurz i n July of
1 962 was mourned by thousands
of graduates of AIFT a s well as
many, many friends all over the
world.
He had devoted a lifetime to the
service of his fellow man, as
scholar, author, traveler, and in·
terpreter of the peoples of Latin
America. He was friend and father
to each of his students as he
prepared them for life and work
in foreign lands.
Those who knew him remember his
modesty, his energy, his brilliant
and restless mind. For those who
did not, his many contributions to
our life and to the American I nstitute
for Foreign Trade remain today
in our hearts and our work l i ke a
monument of granite.
