Description
A booklet containing two scholarly essays, “The Golden West,” by Paul A. Carter and “Men of Vision: Phoenix” by G. Wesley Johnson, which examines the effects of the industrialization of the Southwest. New technology (in the form of railroads, barbed wire and pumps) opened up a new era in the settlement of the southwest, redefining it as a land of opportunity in the vernacular belief. Also included in the booklet are excerpts from “Arizona for Health and Business,” by Whitelaw Reid (New York Times, 1896) and a selected reading list.
