Exhibited from October 18 to November 7, 1954 the theme of this particular show was “expressions by Arizonans in form and color.” Within the catalogue is stated the history and accomplishments of the "Annual Independent Open Show" and says that since its inception in 1948, the "Annual Independent Open Show" has been the spearhead in the expanding movement for art in Tucson. As before, the public voted for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place best in show among the exhibits. The professional choices for the same number of awards were made by judges Gertrude Briggs, George Rosenberg, and Mark Voris. There were 135 works selected to be exhibited in the show with L. B. Curtis awarded first prize in the visitor’s vote for his oil “Road to Nowhere” and Jack Maul awarded first prize from the judges’ vote for his watercolor titled “Abstraction."
