With the help of winds from the west, in ten days, 468,638 acres of heavily overgrown tinder-dry forest on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation and the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest burned.

In that time 423 structures and 16 business were lost, but over 2,023 homes were saved. Of the 4,447 fire fighters, there were 4 Type I Incident Management Teams, 20 Type I Hot Shot Crews, and 77 Type II crews.
