Joseph graduated from a Pennsylvania medical school in 1873. He first moved to Northern California to practice medicine at a mining hospital. It was there he met and married nurse Clara Sarah Evans. They returned to his hometown of Millville, New Jersey and practiced a few years before deciding to return to the West. They resettled in Snowflake, where he served as the Apache County Physician. When Navajo County was created in 1895, Dr. Woolford moved to St. Johns to continue there as the County Physician for Apache County.
