Dr. Woolford was the first doctor in Apache County. Clara was a nurse when they met while working at a Northern California mining hospital. They returned to his New Jersey hometown for a few years, then decided to move back West. While Dr. Woolford closed up his New Jersey practice, Clara came with the children by train to Holbrook, then rode by buckboard to Pinetop. She bought a little cabin there and waited for Dr. Woolford. Once together again, they resettled in Snowflake where he practiced as the Apache County Physician. When the County divided and Snowflake became a part of Navajo County, the family moved to St. Johns, Apache County, where he continued to practice as the County Physician. He died there in 1905. Clara Woolford moved her family to Lakeside and raised her boys and cattle. Later she sold the cattle and moved to Show Low where she opened the Woolford Hotel to serve travelers between Fort Apache and Holbrook.
