In 1916, Tom Pollock, owner of the Flagstaff Lumber Company, organized the Apache Railway Company with the assistance of the Santa Fe Railroad to build 72 miles of track from Holbrook to the new sawmill at Cooley, AZ. In 1923 James McNary and William Cady purchased his enterprises and renamed the sawmill town McNary, after their town in Louisiana. In 1943, McNary was awarded the timber contract for the Maverick Unit and the railroad was extended there a year later. In the 1970s the White Mountain Apache Tribe stopped selling logs to Southwest Forest Industries, who ran the mill at that time and after a fire, the mill shut down in 1980.
