Hicks and his wife came to Texas from Tennessee and settled for awhile before moving on to Arizona Territory in an emigrant train. They first stayed in Casa Grande. Then they moved to Gila County crossing over Pioneer Pass. They first settled in the Bloody Tanks area before buying the Hicks Ranch in Wheatfields, between Globe and Miami. Their son Mark was Roy's grandfather. Roy is a great storyteller, knowledgeable of local history, and all the details. He tells the history of Wheatfields from before Miami existed, of neighboring ranchers, farmers and Native Americans living in area.
