The post office at Tonto was established on the Howell Ranch at the foot of a trail called Jump-off. It served the Cross-7 Cattle Company. The post office opened February 20, 1884 and closed June 6, 1902, with James B. Watkins as its postmaster. The Mormons abandoned the area on August 14, 1890.
