U.S. Army Yuma Proving Grounds Plaque, Gift to Governor Fife Symington

SubjectSymington, J. Fife, 1945- United States. ArmyYuma (Ariz.)DescriptionU.S. Army Yuma Proving Grounds, photographs and two military challenge coins in copper frame. Given to Governor Fife Symington. The photographs show: a computer room, artillery firing, birds in a nest on a cactus, a tank, and a man seated at a desk in the command center. The two challenge coins are the same coin, showing the front and the back. The front of the coin reads, "United Stated Army, YPG, Outstanding Performance" over an image of the American flag. The back of the coin depicts a desert scene with mountains and cactus with a helicopter, tank and artillery piece. A plaque reads: "Presented to Governor Fife Symington From U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground. Military challenge coins have been popular since World War I and will bear the images of an insignia or emblem for a military branch, unit, installation, base, battle and/or other commemorative occasion. Traditionally a coin was given to to increase morale and prove membership or presence at an event when challenged.
