Part OfVern Perry Oral HistoryIntervieweeVern PerryInterviewerJoyce McBrideSubjectGlobe, AZHigh SchoolsHistory--20th CenturyDescriptionAfter graduating from Globe High School, Vernon Perry attended Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher met his bride to be, Lynne, while she was still in high school. After she graduated, they married, and both Vern and Lynne attended NAU while growing their family of 6. Both Lynne and Very got their teachers’ credentials. Vern’s took a teaching job at Chino Valley while Lynne took time off to nurture the babies, but each summer they would return to Globe to work at the Community Center swimming pool. Eventually, jobs came up in the Globe School District and they stayed. Vern, was no longer just an alum of GHS, but was now teaching science shoulder to shoulder with his former biology teacher, Bill Joslin, Sr. He was also on faculty staff alongside coach and math teacher Gerald Matschullat, Mr. Jenkins, Mr. Lyle Thompson and others. He was on the faculty for 30 years, and fondly recalls sponsoring several classes and the Student Council. Vern smiles at some really outrageous shenanigans of one such student council in the traditional attempt at destroying the “M.” Then he tells how Globe almost lost the “G” both legally and permanently, through real estate transactions, but now resolved, how that symbol of the Tiger spirit is forever safe in the good hands of the Department of Education. After Vern and Lynne retired, they relocated temporarily to work in the Pima schools until their youngest son graduated. Since returning to their home in Globe, they’ve kept themselves busy being involved with their family, with the L.D.S. Family History Center, at the Globe High School archives and at the Gila County Historical Society. Vern is also active in the Globe High School Alumni Association.
