He lists the children of Corydon E. and Mollie and Cora, and briefly summarizes their lives before branching out to give the details of the life of his own grandfather, Corydon (Don) Carlton Cooley. Don went to school in Albuquerque, New Mexico and met his wife Ann, an Eastern socialite, who was there for her health. They returned to the Cooley Ranch at Indian Pine when it was at the pinnacle of its affluence, but also when his father Corydon E.'s health was deteriorating. Anthony's father, Richard Cooley, was born at the Cooley Ranch. Corydon E. died in 1917, during World War I. Post-war, the cattle industry crashed throughout the West, taking with it the Cooley income source. Don and Ann needed to find an income, so they moved to Whiteriver, on the White Mountain Apache Reservation. Anthony tells of his grandparents' contribution to the Apache tribe. While his grandfather built the electrical power plant which provided electrical power to Whiteriver, his grandmother taught at the Fort Apache Boarding School and then later served as the postmistress. When Anthony's father, Dick, was 15 years old, the family moved to Cibecue so that Don could establish an Indian Trading Post and also provide electricity to the tribe, while Ann continued to serve as postmistress.
