In 1901, the Territorial Industrial School was established in Benson, Arizona to house delinquent juveniles up to the age of 21. Upon Statehood in 1912, the federal government deeded the site and approximately 4000 surrounding acres to the new State of Arizona to be used as the State Industrial School for Wayward Boys and Girls and the Benson School was closed. In 1927, a separate facility, the Arizona Girls School, was built in Randolph, Arizona, to house girls while boys stayed at the Arizona State Industrial School in Fort Grant.
