Minutes of the Pima County Medical Society, 1904-1954

Spanning half a century, this collection begins during the Arizona Territorial period and continues through the era of the polio epidemic, the Korean War and the birth of television. The minutes of the Pima County Medical Society offer a detailed look into a broad range of medical, social, political and professional issues - some of these at the local level and many at the national level. Any thorough study of the history of medicine in Arizona will benefit from a careful exploration of these documents.

Additional Information
For the years 1904-1920 and 1921-1925 the minutes are handwritten entries in bound notebooks with numbered and lined pages. The 1926-1954 minutes are typed and kept in loose-leaf binders.

For many of the dates after November 1947 there are two sets of minutes - one for an executive committee or board of directors meeting that was held in advance of the regular meeting and one for the regular meeting. In addition, for both the executive committee/board of directors meetings and the regular meetings, there are often two versions of the minutes. Sometimes there are clear differences - such as a long and a short version - and sometimes there are very few, if any, differences between the two versions. Even if there are no differences between two versions, both have been included in this collection.

Lacunae: In the 1904-1920 volume one leaf, representing numbered pages 141 and 142, is known to be missing. In the July 18, 1919 minutes there is a reference to an attached letter which also was not found in the minutes. A discoloration on blank pages 10 and 11 of the 1904-1920 volume indicates that some item, now missing, was filed between those two pages at one time.

Although all pages have been digitized, blank pages have not been included in this Arizona Memory Project digital version of the minutes. Several longer runs of blank pages (1904-1920: pp. 10-29, pp 144-185, 194-201; 1921-1925: pp. 1-14, 17-29) have been indicated in an Editor's Note on the page before the beginning of a run. In other cases - even though there is no note - it can be safely assumed that a numbered page that does not appear in this collection was blank.

The handwritten minutes (1904-1925) were transcribed by various PCMS and AHSL personnel. The editor of this digital collection is Dave Piper, Digital Resources and Special Collections Librarian, University of Arizona Health Sciences Library.
