This collection of over 50 photographs documents the history of health and healing at the Desert Sanatorium, known today as Tucson Medical Center. The Desert Sanatorium opened as a for-profit treatment center in 1924. Drawn by the possibility of using the sun to heal tuberculosis using a technique called “heliotherapy,” the sanatorium attracted patients from all around the United States. The collection includes photographs taken by patients and staff that show images of Tucson landscapes, medical treatments, prominent Tucsonans, early Tucson buildings, and more.
