She and her sister were involved in many sports, including tennis, softball and pep club. Helen attend the Japanese School on 43rd and Indian School Road, where she learn how to speak Japanese and much about her culture. Her family lived in Glendale during World War II. During this period, her and her family worried that they might have to evacuate Glendale and move to a relocation camp, because they lived on the west side of Grand Avenue. Thankfully the camps became too full, her family did not have to evacuate.
