Her father worked on Konishi’s farm as a foreman. Yutaka Konishi leased land from Louis Sands at 55th Avenue between Orangewood and Northern Avenues. He raised lettuce and cantaloupes. Here Maria learned to speak Japanese, as a means of communicating with the Konishi children. In fact, Japanese was her first language. Maria attended the Old Rock Church in Glendale, a structure built by the community, rock by rock, pulled from the river bed. She attended Glendale Grammar School and later St. Mary’s (Girls) High School in Phoenix. She remembers the many celebrations with her family, especially Saints Days celebrations.
