Civilian Conservation Corps and WPA in Arizona
Descriptive
Event TypeGovernment ProgramDate Range1930s (1930-1939)1940s (1940-1949)DescriptionThe Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA) were created by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1933. As part of the New Deal Program, the programs were meant to help provide relief during the Great Depression. Most of the CCC work was manual labor, performed outdoors, with the all-men crews being housed in living in tent communities or camps. WPA work included the construction of buildings and roads, art installations, libraries, zoos, and other public facilities.
The CCC helped create the National and State Park programs by building trails, buildings, and signage that are still in use today. There were dozens of CCC projects in Arizona, including Chiricahua National Monument, Colossal Cave Mountain Park, South Mountain Park in Phoenix, and Petrified Forest National Park, just to name a few. The CCC program ended in 1942, but Arizona has its own Conservation Corps still running today.
One WPA project, the Arizona Writers Project, included short stories that can still be found in the pages of Arizona Highways Magazines from the 1940s.More InformationArizona Conservation Corps
