Glen Canyon Dam was built between 1956 and 1966 within Glen Canyon with the goals of taming the Colorado River in high run-off years, providing water storage, and for electricity production. The dam is 710 feet tall and forms Lake Powell, part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
