The town of Clarkdale in the Verde Valley was founded by William Andrews Clark in 1914. It was designed to be "model town" established as a company town for the Upper Verde Utilities Company. The property had been purchased by Senator William Clark in 1884 and proposed the erection of a smelter and after successful set up of the land, the town was established and first furnace began operating in May of 1915.
